A list of puns related to "Demerara Rum"
Hello, I have an ED15 for sipping. But I thought it would be nice to have a younger demerara for mixing (ED8? Pussers?) I am just not clear which popular cocktails are calling for it. Can you share? Thank you in advance.
FYI: I am based in Europe so no chance to get Hamilton.
The only overproofs my liquor stores have is Wray and Nephew, Goslings 151, Plantation OFTD, and Lamb's Navy 151.
EDIT: For reference this could be for a Zombie, but I'd love it to be my 'overproof rum' substitute whenever called for.
Hello everyone!
Im bartending in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru and I must say that the Tiki recipes goes really well with the local fruits.
But when I want to replicate the classic, it's really hard because not even in Lima, you can find guyanese, martinique or overproof rums.
The one I'm the most interested to find a substitute is the Demerara, because there are so many recipes that calls for it and I havenΒ΄t tried one before so I donΒ΄t know what is the profile.
Any suggestion? I will greatly apreciate your help! And I will start uploading some of my concortions here
Hello, Few months ago, I picked few samples of jamaican rum to discover them (Hampden 8, Worthy Park oloroso, Appleton 21). I would like to reiterate with demerara rums. Which samples would you recommend as a good start to feel the typical demerara tastes? Also, what is it supposed to taste like vs let's say jamaican pot still? Thank you.
Finally picked up a bottle of Hamilton 86. Iβd love to crowdsource any favorites that use Demerara rum. Thanks!
Iβve recently gotten into tiki cocktails and Iβm slowly building up my bar.
Next in line is getting a Demerara rum.
At the local store it seems El Dorado is the easiest to get a hold of. 15y is in stock and I can order both 8y and 12y. No seeing many others, Hamilton for example does not seem to be an option.
There is of course a price difference between the three, but mainly I wanna know which works the best for mixing. Most reviews Iβve read focus on sipping. Even if the 15 is rated as the best, Iβd rather not pick that one if it overpowers the cocktail. Likewise Iβm ok paying the higher price if itβs a great rum for mixing as well as sipping.
So.. what are the thoughts on which of those I should get or is there another great one I should look for that beats them all?
Any recommendations? Been looking at Hamilton 86 and El Dorado 12

Nose : Sherry off course! milk chocolate, balsamic, green banana, lime, roasted demerara sugar (caramel), coconut / almond, sherry sweetness.
Palate : Silky soft arrival with a little licorice root (molasses) that ticks away bitter (almond) peppery and brings fruitiness, raisin, red berries, again sherry sweetness.
Finish : Long, slightly bitter but not disturbing. Oak, very slightly vanilla and honey, delicious!
Overall : Nice and balanced blend of Rum Nation, price / quality wise a nice rum. Accessible, not too sweet, not too dry. Nice balance.
Personal score : 85/100

I've been looking for lists of PGI rums, but the internet has been relatively useless in this matter.
I've almost emptied my last bottle of Hamilton Demerara 86. As far as I know it's not in my state anymore, and I'm not likely to be traveling anytime soon. So I need a replacement. I have Lemonhart 80, El Dorado 5, and Skipper. Bars are still closed here, so I can't sample any. But someone here must know the best replacement.
This would be for mixing, not sipping.
Just a minor update to my last review. I think I was a little harsh on this guy but as a sipper I'm still definitely not a fan. I enjoy or at least don't mind the nose for the most part. In the mouth it's a little hot and burnt sugary which I am not a big fan of. The aftertaste to my tongue though is just nasty. It's still below a 5/10 for me though. For me it's a cocktail mixer and I'm not rushing to restock it.
I also tried the Hamilton black and much the same I really don't like it. I expected to like it actually given the reviews here or the odd mention. I actually dislike that guy more and holy shit was the part I dislike potent.
I also have the El Dorado 15. This one I like a lot better Beautiful smell enjoyable taste but there is just something at the end I really dislike. Some butter burnt sugar molasses thing. This one is sweeter and lacks as much bitterness and what I dislike has the volume turned down and mixed in but it's just part rather than being the main focus.
I think I may just not like demerara rums. Fight me. I mean I got some shit for disliking a rum last time most of you seem to thoroughly enjoy. I think there was some significant fundamental confusion on what a review is and isn't involved in that one. Reviews ARE subjective. Reviews SHOULD be subjective. One bad review should absolutely not make you avoid trying something and be viewed as a definitive objective predictor of YOUR experience. Reviewers are not judges at a competition rating how well a spirit fits it's style and the objective quality of said spirit. Listen to me don't listen to me whatever. The main benefit of reviews here is for me guiding purchases. Find someone who reviews are in line with your thoughts and THEN they become decent predictors of if you should spend your money on something.
Anyways a bit of a rant but I wanted to re-taste it and some other demerara rums to see if it was a style thing, a bad bottle thing, or an "I ate something weird before the review" thing. I think it's a style thing.
My first 4000+ words on Demerara Distillers Ltd., makers of El Dorado and many other rums.

They've made a rum they're calling a Demerara Rum because it's made from Demerara sugar. This is only going to confuse people further when they have *true* Demerara Rum that was made from molasses in Guyana along the Demerara *River* and not from demerara sugar.
*Sigh*
A confusing rum category gets even more confusing...
Iβve been building up my tiki runs over quarantine but have not been able to find Demerara runs anywhere. I live in Seattle and have looked for Hamilton, El Dorado, and Barbancort, with zero luck. Iβm totally willing to buy online as well, but no one seems to ship here. Any suggestions?!
For quite some time now thereβs been no stock of El Dorado rums in Oregon. Other than Hamilton 151, are there any Demerara/Guyanese rums being sold in Oregon? Any labels I might just not realize are of this style?
Looking to get a list of Demerara rum brands. Google searches give a ton of info but I am not finding the list I am hoping for. Any help is appreciated.
I am just starting to branch out into rums and have Smuggler's Cove coming soon, but I am beyond frustrated because there are literally zero bottles of demerara style rums in Maine. All liquor sold in Maine is through Maine Spirits, which has a website you can search their entire catalog on. I have tried searching for every brand I have heard of - Lemon Hart, El Dorado, XM - and zero of them are available in this entire state.
Is there anything I can sub for the demerara rums in cocktail recipes? There is a Maine distilled rum called Ration Expedition Style rum, but I know nothing about it or how it would compare. Also - liquor cannot be ordered online or shipped to Maine so I am shit out of luck unless I get out of state at some point.
El Dorado Demerara Gold Rum is not listed on their website! Good or an unbalanced mess? And would their low ends go through their antique equipment?
I've had an old mini vintage rum that looked like Tar yet tasted like Real Dry Rum. With Old worn Oak and a Very Molasses Thickness like it was added. Maybe they did it way better in the old days?
Normally I would say away from any additive added rum! I've liked Appleton 12, Havana's and Pampero Blanco Rum cause their clean and nice! Reviews suggest their Superior White has Smokey notes. Tell me what you think?
This has a grouping called demerara rum that includes Lemon Hart 80, Hamilton 86, and Skipper demerara, but also El Dorado 5-21. Smuggler's Cove labels the first half of those as black blended, and the El Dorados 5-12 as blended aged. Is one method of categorization more technically accurate while the other is better for flavor profiles for making drinks, or what?
Just trying to get into rum and learn categories so I know whether or not I can make a drink properly, and unfortunately it seems rum is ridiculously complex and everyone categorizes things differently.
