Why didn't americans during the "Gold Rush" build houses from watter & daub or cob rather than wooden planks?

Watte & daub/cob is a very old construction material that had more than proven itself to humanity.

It insulates well in the summer heat, it keeps the heat in during cold winters and it is resilient to fire and termites. I would also presume it could survive hurricanse better, especially if built relatively flat.

I in the 21st century live inside a watter & daub building built around 130 years ago, so it wasn't abandoned in Hungary.

Why didn't Gold Rush style mining towns not use this technology, why did they use the more fragile lumber as material?

Hi builders, just wondering if anyone had some advice for painting the material plaster/daub?

I have 3D printed 3 buildings that have tudor style roof arches with the plaster infill.

I've textured them with a plaster which I'm satisfied, but when it comes to painting I am ending up with a very awkward blend of colours that I'm not happy with.

I've seen lots of amazing results from crafters here, and and I am hoping that someone would be willing to share some advice on the colours and techniques to use?

Thank you!

Application- to spray or daub? Do you ever choose based on scent?

Disclaimer: I'm new to perfume, so this is probably a noob question/topic.

Do you apply scents in a certain way based on type? Is there a reason you always choose one method over the other? Very curious to hear thoughts from those who've been at this a while!

So far I've found I usually prefer daubing perfumes at pulse points. It seems to me that with this method you catch intimate little wafts at odd moments throughout the day, while with spraying you get a more consistently projected cloud that's more noticeable to others at a distance.

It also seems like with daubing a scent lasts longer, and I feel like I "catch" more of the interesting notes, whereas with spray the composition seems more even (but I'm not sure if that's just in my head, I don't spray a ton so my data sample is small.)

I was sampling a heavier, more aggressive-profile perfume recently however, and thought to myself "I bet this would be more palatable if I applied a small amount as a mist vs. daubing."

Blackout Bingo best strategies to use: powerups, timing, daub location, ect. - BEGINNERS!!!

Hey everyone, I'm a relatively new player but I did a lot of research on this game and others similar to it in hopes of finding the best strategies to get the highest score and beat your opponent and get that money!! I hope this helps and feel free to comment things I should change or strategies of your own!!

  1. Speed is key to get more points and get powerups faster... daub as soon as you see the number that was called on your board (but be careful because you will be penalized for clicking a number that wasn't called and for clicking bingo if you don't have it... but we'll get to clicking bingo)

  2. Go for the X and the corners first, including free daub and golden ball choices unless board is looking random and there is little time left, then fill lines quickly

NOTE ABOUT GOLDEN BALLS: (remember u want to go for the corners) (this requires that u memorize the corners so u know which golden ball to choose after you activate it, but this is stressful, especially when playing with 3 boards, so u don't need to memorize them at least until you have a golden ball in your lineup. But even then, if it's the first or even second in ur line up, u can just casually start to memorize a couple and hopefully you'll start to fill more of them before u are required to use a golden ball... its not super stressful until you have more boards and it starts to go faster (higher level games). HOWEVER, if all of your corners are already filled while your sitting on a golden ball, try to memorize just a couple of daubs that would get u at least one bingo, multiple bingos is obvi better bit its hard to analyze a mostly full board quick and while being timed like that, so usually I just look to make one bingo)

  1. Don't use these powerups until your third slot is filled and you have to use one in order to keep getting new ones: free daub, golden ball, x2. This is in effort of getting the most points and not choosing a number with free daub or golden ball that has a possibility of being called after you choose it for free (aka waste of a free daub). Disclaimer: if you have a x2 as the last powerup in your line up, preventing you from getting more powerups, then use it right away to make room unless you want to employee the extremely advanced x2 powerup strategy below... don't do it yet, lol. This scenario is pretty rare and in my opinion it's much more important to practice literally everything else im talking about until you get to higher level zcoin games/high level pai

Why are there so few wattle-and-daub or wooden houses preserved in Ireland, compared to other western European countries? It seems like only the stone buildings (castles, towers, abbeys) are left.

I'm aware that there are remains of CrannΓ³gs and raths but these seem to be mostly overgrown dykes and land projections.

Idea: Wattle and Daub walls

Just something i'd been thinking about...what if there was a wall like this? it could take clay and wood, with clay being a mineable resources by digging the sandy shores next to the sea or rivers. aside from being it's own style of block to allow more variation, it could serve as an intermediate tier of walls between wood and stone, providing slightly more hitpoints and structural integrity than wood, but not quite as much as blocks requiring a stonecutter like full stone walls.

Thatch Roof & Wattle & Daub Block with Unique Mechanics

The Thatch roof block would basically just be a Hay Bale block but as stairs, & would be crafted similar to this.

https://preview.redd.it/gcojeiwfocn51.png?width=168&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d747912a2cd458d26ef877c4f028b5de2c78f01

Perhaps the bottom & full side (opposite to the stair cutout) could use a different texture? Here's a quick mockup:

Side note: The Thatch Roof block shouldn't use the Hay Bale Top texture on any side.

Extra idea for the Thatch Roof block: Maybe when the block is rained on (under the sky when it's raining) the block becomes "slippery" & entities slide down it uncontrollably.Maybe if the block is in contact with a water block it keeps this mechanic even when it's not raining?

And the look of Wattle & Daub is known mostly from Medieval looking "Tudor Style" houses. It was made from mud & clay, sticks, & straw. For the block, it would be crafted like this:

https://preview.redd.it/fxn1mr3oqcn51.png?width=168&format=png&auto=webp&s=238d3730b642a38b653a639c5377e9a7d6493628

The block would be rotatable like a combination of Log blocks & Glazed Terracotta so that players can create different shapes with the blocks texture. Here's a quick mockup:

North/South faces / Top/Bottom faces / East/West faces

(calling the faces "north & south, etc" is just for directions in this case, you can place the "north" face of a block facing the west, or even up, for this example) (also, maybe remove the east/west faces if that makes it too complex) And in order for the outside & inside of houses to have consistent patterns, the north & south faces would have to mirror each others textures on the block. For example, if on the north face of the block the empty corner were up & to the left, (like in the example texture) then on the south face of the block the empty corner will be at the top right.

Special wattle-and-daub blocks to create medieval houses like these (link inside). Would easily fit into most updates being both natural, practical and long-desired.

What I'm talking about: https://imgur.com/a/FABsChy

Wattle and daub is really just colored plaster against wooden frames and weavings, used throughout medieval Europe and in other ways across the world.

I'd love to see some kind of wood-and-earth block that provide for the construction of medieval-style, or just simply wood-and-earth style houses.

Other such suggestion:
