A list of puns related to "Clawhammer"
So for example, in standard open G tuning is it worth the effort to learn anything beyond the G major and the relative e minor scale. If so are there scales that are more or less useful?
I WANT to try claw hammer. But I'm having trouble finding any videos that explain ways to practice it anymore than the "boom chicka" exercise. Anyone have pointers on where to go for more pointers on this?
Thanks!
I have a bad habit of biting my nails, and I've been doing it for years. Is there anything that I can do to help with Clawhammer? Do any of you have this issue and have you been able to solve for it? I started playing scruggs-style just because I had picks, but I like the sound of clawhammer better. I've tried to flip my picks around but it hits too hard on the string or gets caught.
I mean, I like playing Shady Grove, Old Joe Clark, John Henry, Arkansas Traveler, Cripple Creek and Hard Times as much as the next guy.
But it might be fun to play some music from the last half century too! I know Banjo Hangout has a few (this search returns what I think is their library of "contemporary" clawhammer songs).
But I would love to know if there's more out there for those like myself lacking in talent to play songs by ear or create my own tab.
I also play some Scruggs and know that opens the world quite a bit to modern songs. But I kind of like the sound of modern songs on clawhammer.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
I am in love with that version. I cannot for the life of me teach it to myself and none of the tabs Iβve found sound like that version. If any of you have a good ear (unlike me) I would pay you for a tab. I want to learn it so bad.
Iβm looking for recommendations to help me understand my own musical tastes! Iβve always loved the sound of the banjo but two pieces of music Iβve heard in the last few years have really connected with me and I want to hear more in a similar style, but donβt know what Iβm looking for!
The two pieces are This popular video of Andy Thorn playing to a fox (apparently improvised but others say it sounds like whisky for breakfast) and Steve Martin playing this banjo solo version of his song Friend of Mine
In both cases, other versions of the same songs havenβt connected with me in the way so I suppose itβs this style of Banjo playing im keen to hear more ofβ¦ I know itβs clawhammer but itβs more specific than that- calm, wistfulβ¦? Iβm hoping someone can describe it for me and offer recommendations of other things I might like! Thanks so much
I've been in kinda a rut with learning new songs recently since I can't find any that grab my interest, does anyone have some good blues-y type tunes I could learn for clawhammer?
I've had a banjo for ten (!) years that I've played very, very sporadically. At this point I can play the first couple chapters of Ken Perlman's clawhammer banjo book but am looking for other books, videos, learning material, etc. to draw from. I would say I'm definitely still a beginner but have an understanding of most of the basics. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I am looking for advice on how to utilize the 4th string in my playing. It is the one string I have yet to grasp a feel of. Any advice is welcome.
iβm just curious to know which fingernail clawhammer players on this sub use to strike the strings. iβm a woman with small-ish hands and use my middle finger, but iβm curious to see how many others use their middle finger and how many use their index finger
Iβm looking for some guidance on how to tune my tenor ukulele to play with the Clawhammer technique. Right I have it as GCEG, does anyone have any thoughts?
I'm interested in learning some of the ragtime-ish old time tunes in C - with 2-5-1 chord sequences and etc. What tunings do you like for that? So far I've only played in standard open G, mostly capoed to A.
when i looking on banjo shop, i realized banjo has many kind.
typically, there are bluegrass and open back.
in shop, commended open back style to playing clawhammer.
but i'm more like shape bluegrass style banjo.
if i play to clawhammer style with bluegrass banjo, it sound is strange?
Hello im korean want learn banjo. I want learn clawhammer style banjo because i guess clawhammer sounds has plentiful more than bluegrass style. But most of books introducing about bluegrass. Can Someone commend me clawhammer style book?
I've been playing clawhammer for about a year now, and I am loving it. However, I hit a plateau about six months in. Ive used clawahmmerbanjo.net and Clifton Hick's videos, and I feel like i've reached a level where I can play most of the stuff they teach. I was wondering if there are any good books or resources available for intermediate clawhammer players.
I love music but Iβve been to lazy to learn an Instrument however,I want to change that lol. Any experiences and/or good lessons you saw when you were starting out would be greatly appreciated. Also I do not yet own a banjo but Iβve been looking at a glarry 5-string but Iβm not sure if thatβs a good model or not so if you have any recommendations for a noob like me Iβd really appreciate it (Iβm primarily looking for a resonator/closed back banjo) Thanks, all for reading and have a good day :)
I've been looking for people who want to start a band. I play a good number of genres and I love making music! I also have a unique way of playing the guitar. I only use it while playing folk or subgenres of folk. I also love to add to my skillset.
Clawhammer enthusiasts will very clearly tell you that their style requires alternate tunings. I don't see the same emphasis when I read about the Scruggs style. Why is this? You still have the same issue where the drone string might not have anything to do with the key/chords of the song.
My job is boring, but I can listen to music all day. any artist & album recommendations to inspire the clawhammer journey? Thanks!
I found a 20 gallon ss brewtech kettle for a great price on fb marketplace. I'm currently in the process of making the jump to 240 volt brewing on my 10.5 anvil foundry. This got me thinking that it would be a fun and rewarding project to convert this new kettle into an electric biab system by adding a heating element and grain basket, quick disconnects, recirculation, etc. This would also give me the opportunity to brew split 10 gallon batches for different hop schedules and yeast.
I'm curious if someone has done this successfully by drilling and adding fittings or having them welded? How did you do it? Is there a comprehensive guide to doing this correctly?
As for right now i would be looking to add TRI clamp fittings preferably by paying a welder to do the work so that I could add a 5500-6500 watt heating element, and a digital thermometer.
Hello!
I have been playing the Clawhammer Banjo for a few years now and I have found tabs to many songs although I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for websites/books with Civil War Music Tabs for the Clawhammer Banjo? Even if it is Bluegrass or Guitar tabs I would love to still look at it since I can probably translate some of it!
i have really weak and slow growing nails from biting my nails my whole life so my solution has been to get a singular acrylic or gel tip on my first finger about once a month. the nail techs definitely look at me weird when i ask for a singular nail with a texas flag design on it but that hasn't stopped me. i'm wondering what other people have come up with as solutions? i tried one type of pick but it kept falling off so i gave up
