Greetings dear friends, my son has been playing mridangam for 2 years. For the last 3-4 mos he has a cut in his right index finger and we have put vaseline and other items to make the cut heal faster but any amount of moisturizer doesnt seem to be helping the cause..
We end up stalling practice for a few days till the cut heals a little bit, but we lose practice time.
Do you or anyone have any feedback about how we may heal the cut? We traditionally have dry skin so the cut is seeming to be nagging situation.
Thank you for reading this far. Kind regards, Ak
Had started a thread in /Mridangam, though I'm unsure how often that subreddit is visited. Thought /Carnatic could also be helpful in my search for information on purchasing a Mridangam.
"Greetings,
After lurking for a long time, I finally have a reason to register on Reddit. I've been looking into learning the Mridangam over the past week, and am feeling that I'd like to make the commitment.
I'm having trouble finding information on purchasing a quality Mridangam. I've seen some on Ebay which come from this retailer:
http://www.buyraagini.com/maharaja-mridangam-jackfruit-wood-bolt-tuned-south-indian-drum-br-bbi/?gclid=CLScs8SYjscCFVUlgQodb7gEDQ
Are the ones that they offer quality instruments? For the money, is there a better option?"
I am a banjo player inspired by Bela Fleck's album "Tabula Rasa" as well as slightly by the film "The Visitor." I essentially have no experience in percussion but would like to experiment with the genre of "world music," at least what I've experienced in the above publications. The Mridangam seems to be what I'd like to get my hands on- I like how it interacts with the banjo on this album and I like the fluctuations in the tone (forgive me if I don't know the correct vocabulary here, check out the first track on the album). However, it seems this is a fairly rare instrument to purchase and all are $500+ from questionable sources from India. Is there somewhere I can purchase a reliable instrument without wondering if it's made in some obscure sweatshop in India or is there a similar instrument I can get cheaper that I can learn on? I'm vaguely familar with the tabla and the djembe but obviously both are significantly different.
