[Unpopular opinion] Charlie Carrel Is basically right about Fuck GTO

Disclaimer: Charlie is not a great cash player. But he's a very intuitive guy and picks up on what is wrong with industry.

Tons of poker products and courses in the 2017-2020 era kept capitalizing on GTO this, GTO that. GTO ranges down to the 0.0X% of frequencies, solvers that can solve more and more accurate, and $1,000 courses that are literally a compilation of numbers on a spreadsheet (looking at you Kanu). 10nl players randomizing postflop decisions and wondering why they aren't advancing as quick as they'd like. People were convinced that they needed to play perfect, and in a manner that could not be exploited. But... why?

Every single player on earth plays in a way that can be exploited. Linus does, Limitless does, I do, you do. And that's ok. That's good! Because it means there is still creativity, ingenuity, and mind games left in poker.

Here is a pretty simple example from a 10nl student I have-

10nl, ~100BB stacks, BTN opens 2.5bb w/ 88, SB 11bb.

Flop 343, SB cb ~16bb. BTN call

Turn 4 SB cb AI, BTN call

I asked why he called, he said "If I fold all my overpairs I'm basically folding my range so he can jam most of range and I will be exploited" Which is completely right! He's 100% right and has great theory knowledge and he STILL fucked up this spot. Because when you try to play just like the solver, you don't play optimally.

It's a fold against most players. Most 10nl regs at least. Most live 1-2 regs, most 50z regs, against a lot of 200z regs even. It's a fold, unless you have a read that they bluff enough. Because while you tilt about being exploited, the nit reg from Belarus is sitting there with his QQ, if you fold, he just moves on and doesn't think about it again. And he will check his KQ when he gets to this spot again. And you will not be exploited because there are thousands of poker players online and not everything is about you. To really use GTO, you need to spend months studying sims, and actually understanding why the solver does what it does. Not checking your hands after the fact and seeing that your hand can be called and moving on.

So when Charlie says Fuck GTO, he means fuck all the companies and products telling you you need to play more optimal and buy their higher quality solutions, because what you really need to do is think about how other people play in a way that is not optimal, and adjust yourself to that.

Patrons in study carrels removing masks

Hi all,

My library enforces a mask policy for all patrons. My reference section has several study carrels out of sight from the main desk on both sides of the room. Patrons are notorious for removing their masks once they are out of sight and they usually claim that it's because they're not around people so they don't have to wear the mask.

Do you deal with this at your library?

Friendly head: Study carrels are for individual or quiet studying

Not so friendly body, more towards a rant body:

Dear stupid f**ks who were shouting your lungs off and saying the most stupid s**t in your study carrel on the 6th floor, s***w you! You f**ked the whole wing's study session up. Especially that mf who was coughing all the goddamn time and not wearing a mask; walking so proud with "look at me I'm breaking laws" in his eyes. B**ch, f**k you really. f**k what you do, f**k where you go. f**k how you are. Really just f**k you. "Breaking laws" is not impressive, not failing calc 1 is. Are the ethernet ports in the library's personal carrel study rooms like not working or something (the rooms on the third floor with the doors)? I tried both ports, and neither port gave me an ethernet connection to my laptop.

Has anyone else had this issue with trying to connect to the ethernet port in the library's personal carrel study rooms? I would just use WI-FI, but I've found that some of the rooms have decent connection and other rooms have extremely poor connection.

For β€œSmacker Carrel” Employeesβ€” Are all stores haunted?????

Okay the establishment I work at rhymes with smacker carrell and I would very much like to hear from other people about how every store seems to have a ghostly presence. For those who don’t know the establishment it’s centered around southern hospitality and has manyyyyyy extremely old items, tools, paintings, and just artifacts in general. At my store specifically I’ve had sodas fly off the stockrooms shelves, the signature talking parrot that’s MOTION ACTIVATED go off when nobody is around, and many more. The most recent was a guest actually died in the restaurant part and the entire night one of the tools hanging from the ceiling swung for no reason β€”- our AC is literally broken and no one could possibly reach it. My theory is that since there’s so many artifacts and items from the time period of when slavery was still a huge issue and items from the Jim Crow era, that we are way more likely to have a ghostly presence. I’ve also heard from other employees at stores in the area that they also seem to have a ghostly presence. One of our night maintenance guys has even stated that he’s completely cleaned the retail part and came back to a bunch of Shit knocked off the shelf.

But please smacker carrell people I want to hear your stories!! And of course feel free to just talk about your time in general I love hearing from people in the same store!

Does anyone know if those big brown desks that line the hallway in SW are set up? If not, are there any other spaces open for study?
