Before people jump on me saying I'm salty, I'll admit that I am salty. Not because I've lost money to this, but because every day when I look through items to buy for DE, I have to sift through these scammers.
For those that don't know what I'm referencing, I have someone on my server who posts a large number of mediocre items for a bid of 1c or 1s and with a buyout price in the 700-800g range. Every day, they take the items off the market before bids go through and then repost them, presumably catching some unsuspecting people who buyout the item and lose a ton of gold. There's no way to counter this as they can cancel the auction even if you bid on it. As long as they're diligent, the only money they stand to lose is the posting fee. It sounds like a lot of work but with an addon like TSM, you can do it quite quickly.
As far as I know, this practice isn't against the TOS for WoW. You're welcome to post your auctions at any price you want, high or low, and anyone is welcome to buy it at whatever price is listed. That being said, there is nobody (outside of maybe someone selling gold in a sneaky way) who would actually be happy with their purchase if they got caught by this. Nobody is looking at this and saying, "Wow! 800g for a large prismatic shard! What a deal". So clearly, this practice is done maliciously to screw others over.
Some might say, "Get an auction addon" as a fix for this. I've still heard of people who have had issues with auction addons and have accidentally bought items like this. And why should someone have to get an outside addon just to counter this issue? Personally I jump between using TSM and the default auction because there's some things I find difficult about the coding in TSM and haven't put in the effort to learn.
Posting items like this is predatory and is not a net gain in anyway. It screws over the regular player, wastes the time of people looking for legitimate auctions, forces people to be far more careful in simple transactions, and encourages people to play in a way that hurts other players. While I don't think any changes will happen in this regard, I feel that if a bid is put in on an auction, it shouldn't be able to be cancelled. That seems to be the most reasonable solution and ensures that only people who actually intend to sell items honestly are putting items up.
It's at a point on my server where nearly 70% of trading goods are on super high buyouts on the hope people will not notice and spend 900g on one illusion dust. These guys will cancel a low bid if they don't get any bites.
It's literally a smart way to scam in the hopes of some sucker (no I have not fallen for it but almost did) will waste 900g on 1 illusion dust. Relying on add-ons shouldn't be a solution.
A good fix would be if someone bids on an item you can't cancel it (you can however cancel any Auctions safely with a 15 min grace period should you accidentally list someone incorrectly)
I'm so sick of almost getting cars, which are then bought out because they're at the top of the list. There are cars lower down with starting prices that nobody is going to pay — pick those! There are often even cars listed with lower starting prices.

Interesting - Veoneer specifically focuses on the Level 2 (and presumably 2++) space.
I see nobody talking about this and I'm starting to feel like I'm crazy.

In which it was specified that we finally got AH improvements making us able to sort by Buyout instead of by Bid.
That was great news, and it was live for around 2-3 days or so, until the TBC release hit. Since then, I've noticed that it reverted back to "Sort by bid" instead of Buyout, and it's been pretty weird how they made a fix, and randomly it disappeared 3 days later.
With how the AH has been completely unusable due to lag, this seems like it would pretty much almost solve all problems, since the default AH works pretty well, it's just the addons that are incredibly slow.
I cant find anyone talking about this Buyout to Bid reverted change, and it's been pretty infuriating to myself, since IMO it's really crazy how incompetent someone has to be to announce a fix, have it be live for 3 days only to seemingly accidently revert it without saying anything.
Did I miss some hotfix, or is Blizzard taking the piss again?
On Pagle I started placing bids on everything around noon. You know how those people post stupid low bid with high buyout to appear first in line like and cancel if their item doesn't sell? Well I bid on all those items, and the auction house is closed so you can't cancel now :) EDIT: Auctions I bid on are starting to come in, there were a few 2hr auctions I bid on. Auctions were not auto cancelled and probably are are just 'hidden' until they sell via bid or expire!!!
There's a person on my server who consistently posts trade goods for ridiculously low bid prices (1c) and ridiculously high buyout prices. They always end up canceling these auctions if I ever try to bid on them. This person is all over the AH so they must have a ton of gold. What's the thought process behind this? Are they hoping people accidentally click buyout instead of bid?
