Blyleven cards are so fun to use and this one would be nasty with 125 h/9.
And yes, he would be a Rangers card!
Please SDS...
Hi MLBTheShow community, Iβm looking to finish the AL West collection and heβs the only one I need. However, it says heβs an event card. How in the world do I get him?
Thank you in advance for the help
Iβm a fairly casual baseball fan, and I hadnβt heard of Bert Blyleven until his name came up on the greatest players of all time by jersey number poll a little while back. When I was doing some research on him, I found that most sources wouldnβt really talk about any pitches that he threw besides his curveball. One article mentions that he only threw a 4 seamer and curveball during his early career, but doesnβt mention what changed. His hall of fame bio says he threw 2 curveballs but no other source backs that up. Watching some footage, it looks like he throws a 2-seamer but Iβm not sure.
Could someone more familiar with 70s-80s baseball give a breakdown of his pitches?
I've basically just been playing the RIB showdown lately to get all the players/sell the more expensive ones when I pull them. Every time I get Blyleven in the final showdown I know I'm fucked. Yesterday I went into the showdown 12-12 and didn't scrape across a run until 4 outs remaining. Then I did the same thing with 3 outs remaining. And now I just went in 12-12 again and lost. Didn't get a guy on base the entire first time through the order, and then when I finally did I immediately grounded into a double play. I can't hit the guy. Does anyone have that one card that for whatever reason you just can't hit against them to save your life?
Iβm trying to make a Bert blyleven player in success mode, and Iβm wondering if any of you guys who are more familiar with 70s-80s baseball can give me some info on him.
For velocity, the only thing I have to go on is that his curveball was in the low 80s. I think I should make his 4 seamer 92-93, and possibly use my original pitch (which will be a drop curve) to get the speed up if necessary.
Besides the drop curve, what other breaking pitches did he have? Iβve seen articles claim he threw a two seamer, a secondary curveball, and a changeup, but never all three.
Control I imagine will be a B or so, stamina will be 200+ with durability 4 and recovery 4 since he pitched so many innings.
Are there any special abilities he should have? Iβm thinking spin 4 makes sense, maybe groundball pitcher, maybe doctor k? Any negative abilities?
Finally getting around to reading Keith Law's "Smart Baseball", and in the chapter where he's blasting the worth of pitcher wins as a stat, one of the pieces of evidence he used was that it took Bert 14 years to get into the HOF, largely because, in Law's opinion, he didn't have 300 wins (he finished with "only" 287). One of the reasons that's ridiculous, says Law, is that Bert threw 75 complete games where he got the loss. That stat blew my mind!
