A woman stopped to ask the lady on the desk at the carpark about nearby Silbury Hill (the largest artificial prehistoric mound in Europe).
She replied:
"Oh, it's about half a mile on foot. You can't go up it any more - it's fenced off because of erosion.
But you can go and stand by and say "Ooh! That's odd!""
I nearly choked trying not to laugh out loud
Just completed a two day tour with my 15yo daughter on road bikes with light luggage.
I plotted a route on RideWithGPS which has picked up some NCN routes - nice to get away from A and B roads.
Chippenham to Calne is on an unpaved railway path. Bit muddy, quite bumpy. I enjoyed it but it's hard work, especially for daughter.
Calne then Avebury to Marlborough on the other hand picked up a byway to take us over the ridgeway. Again unsurfaced paths, one stretch of a 10 metre long series of puddles. None of this is suitable for road bikes even in dryer weather.
We ended up on the A4 - fast, wide tarmac.
