Architraves
Does it happen to you that the architraves disappear for no reason?

How to replace loft hatch? I don't want to knock the architrave off as it is a plaster and lathe ceiling and I'm afraid it will crumble. Can I fit a shop-bought plastic hatch over or around it? The ladder kit came with door fixings but I'm no carpenter. It is also oversize (opening is: 66 x 73.5 cm)

Arched window, what are my finishing options? The frame is installed flush to the wall. I assume a custom architrave would be pretty expensive, itβs only for 1 window in the property? Alternative options?

Old architraves...Can I just add oil?
I have recently purchased a new house and the architraves throughout the house are an old hard wood. They are looking a little tired in places, and have a bit of paint on them in others. I was hoping to avoid sanding them all back before re-coating (there's alot of them!). I would love to have the hardwood trim everywhere looking as good as possible. Would I be able to just give a light sanding where necessary and then add tung oil throughout? Or will this end up looking uneven and patchy?
The house is about 50 years old and to me it looks like it's still the original coating.

How big is too big? I've recently replaced the old grooved jamb doors with new flat jamb. How big of a gap between a door jamb and framing is too big? There will be 60mm architrave around all doors in the house

Previous owner glossed all the wood- skirting, architraves, everywhere he could. Can I avoid sanding it all down by applying zinser? And if I can, what sort? I'd like to use water soluble paints if possible (I know I may be asking the imposssible).

Why would someone do this? Backwards architraves
Last year my partner and I bought in a bit of a panic with strong FOMO and a dep that was getting less workable.
We bought a property in the Hutt, had a building inspection, which notes nothing of any concern.
Many months later I had a builder in to fix a window.
"Why are you architraves all backwards?"
"They are?!"
I thought they looked a bit weird, but now I see it...first thought was I'm a huge dumb ass.
Second thought it, why would someone do this? What possible reason would you have for doing it backwards?

To replace this hatch with a hinged one that drops down (for a ladder). It is a non-standard size (bigger than usual). Any ideas? Will I need to knock the architrave off and set the new hatch flush with the ceiling? Or can I set it in some way flush with the architrave?

Please talk to me about new doors and architraves
Not really a DIY question I know but you lot are very knowledgeable!
I'm at the point now where we have new plaster everywhere and I'm getting ready to paint. It's just become clear how crappy my internal doors and architraves are and I'd like to replace them.
Should I do this before painting? I suspect ideally I should have done this before plastering but that horse has bolted!
Thank you.

Advice on stripping + painting mission brown picture rails, architraves, skirting boards and doors
Our house was built in the 40s (in Australia) and has a whole lot of brown. The skirting boards, architraves and picture rails (and doors) are all a similar mission brown colour, and we're keen to either strip them and give them a lighter varnish, or paint them.
Here's what we're working with
Current approach would be to use a paint scraper and then an orbital sander, but this feels highly inefficient.
Questions are:
- Is this paint? or a stain? Or a veneer? It's really hard for me to tell
- If it's paint it seems to be oil-based (metho doesn't remove it). Is paint stripper an option?
- Would you suggest removing the picture rails and skirting boards to treat them + paint them and then put them back on?
- Is it easier just to replace the whole lot? New picture rails would cost around AU$1200 for the house but then there's also the windows, skirting boards etc

Why is the door trim/ architrave offset from the door frame/ jamb?
In my case the door only opens 90Β° so it won't impede the door from opening fully. I think that not offsetting looks better.

Any tips for DIYing my skirting and architrave installation?
I've just had tiles put down in the hallway and now it needs new skirting and architrave (just a simple chamfered MDF) it's a nightmare to try and get a carpenter within the next few months so I was thinking of giving it a go myself. I've got the use of a mitre saw but I'm still wary of making a mess of it. Any tips or guidance much appreciated!

Tips for removing and replacing skirting independent of frames/architraves?
Am currently in the process of stripping all the paint and gunk from the architraves, window frames and wood panelling in my Victorian flat ahead of repairing and repainting, which is honestly a pain in the arse but ultimately easier and cheaper than replacing like for like, especially given current cost of lumber. Have heard that the conventional wisdom with skirting, however, is that it's better just to throw out and replace. But what I don't understand is, how is it possible to separate the skirting from the rest of the woodwork? For the most part the one seems to just flow into the other? For people that have completed this kind of project, what kind of tools/methods did you end up using to avoid damaging the stuff you want to keep? Also, assuming I do manage to get the skirting out and replaced, am I going to have to replaster the wall above it?

Beginning around 125 CE, "The Canopus" hosted feasts and festivals at Hadrian's Villa. The 120-meter pool, flanked by an ornamental architrave and columnar "Caryatid" statues, evoked the traveling emperor's favorite aspects of the East: Hellenistic culture and Egyptian-Nile pleasures. Column and Architrave Question
I am a brick, block, and stone mason interested in architecture. I'm currently reading 'Get Your House Right'. With masonry in the midwest, we are taught to always think about water and the path it can travel in relation to the building. While reading about columns I can't help but notice many "lips" or ledges where water could sit after a driven rain or snow and potentially cause problems. I would be interested to hear any thoughts or opinions on marrying the traditional style with practical necessity of weather resistance. I will attempt to post a picture to this thread of an illustration of the 'correct' use of column and Architrave to illustrate my thoughts.
