A list of puns related to "Alar"
Does the Ctheah stays in the tree because of the guards?
Does no one attempt to speak with the Ctheah because of the guards?
Sithe guards. Archers with long bows.
Do we even see the Sithe? Even evidence of them?
No old arrows, fletchings-up, sticking out of hapless transgressors of the past?
Maybe existence of guards is no longer the case.
Just a story.
Wouldn't it be ironic if there were no remaining guards and the Cthaeh stays in the tree from the memory of guards?
Like in that Elephant/rope folktale?
I can't say with certainty this situation exemplifies the opposite of ALAR, but it's in the the neighborhood.
The shamble men are described as something like mix between a zombie and a homeless person but seem to instill a real fear in some people and be known to most all people in the corners.
They are described as 'Hungry and Cold' and hinted to show ravenous eating of something, likely crops.
So my theory is, if you are reckless and subject yourself to binders chills regularily, and maybe this happened in a time people knew less about the sciences involved, it could have a permanent effect on you.
If these arcanists of old were using their body heat a lot they would also understand that food is the fuel thr body needs to produce heat.
What if these arcanists were using irresponsible links involving their body heat, and even maybe coupling that with some irresponsible manipulation of their energy intake and when the binders chills hit and they lose control of their links the Arcanists Alar breaks and they spiral into their bodies cooling down until they die.
Except they do not die. Because they have some flawed emergency back up system in place which was supposed to enable them to just eat food that was beyond what was normal and somehow get their heat back up. Probably by finding a way to change the food into heat in bigger ratios than normal, while losing out on nutrients.
But something is off, maybe the calculations did not account for the increased slippage as your mind deteriorates, and they end up in a vicious circle.
A body cold and cooling towards inevitable death. A hunger made uncontrollable by mostly providing heat against the cold. And a mind to broken to see, understand, or so anything about it.
It might explain in part the fear people have of arcanists even if they havr plenty other reasons. And if they come like animals to eat the crops it makes sense people burn effigies of them in the fire in a ritual to protect the crops.
But it could also be seen as the people trying to help them and maybe it started like that.
Someone with a limited but percursory knowledge of sympathy might easily believe that these poor cold souls could be warmed by making a likeness of them and throwing it kn the fire. But as mistrust was more common than empathy in regards to arcanists the ritual might have taken on a new meaning for people as the years passed.
Just a theory but I am curious what others think.
Hi,
Currently i am raidleading in the 25 mans. We are currently thinking of what we should do with ashes, just to be clear beforehand. I dont want any drama or quiters. So how's you guild handling the mount?
Just to clafiry: we are using lootcouncil.

Raid is perfectly stacked but entire raid takes full dive bomb damage.
Edit: I saw another raid successfully kill al'ar using stack strat and the damage was normal. So this is obviously a bug but it may not just be something Blizzard managed to break. If anyone has more info on what causes this bug it would be appreciated!
Apparently my surgeon did do an alar cinch on me during my DJS. Just wondering, does that leave any visible scars anywhere? or is it all internal?
Ok, terrible is maybe a bit of a stretch, but with the magic system being as it is, it seems like in a lot of situations where kvothe finds himself without link or source, he has more options than using his own blood.
The example that always strikes me as odd when I re-listen to the books : the bandid's camp in the eld. Kvothe is so mad that he doesn't have a fire, saying that he can make due without a course OR a link, but without either he can't do much of anything. But only moments before he mentions there were 2 bon fires at the base of the giant tree not too far away. That's a source isn't it? he doesn't have a link to it maybe (though i assume the ash he has in his cloak would still work as a link? even if it's a bad one?).
Same scene : it's been established that water and ice hold a huge amount fo usable energy for a symphatist to use. it's pouring rain in the scene, and still Kvothe doesn't think to draw heat from the water that's all around him?
Even if that somehow doesn't work because it's a bunch of little drops of water or something, he has a dead body full of blood that he could use instead of his own, as a source or as a method to draw heat away from the other - living - bodies down at the camp.
In this one scene alone, there are SO many ways for kvothe to use his magic in a much safer way than he ends up doing. Don't get me wrong he is powerful but just not the most creative in how he puts that power to use in some cases.
Would love to hear what you all think about this and maybe some other situations where things like this happen.
Still bothers me to this day, but since my dad is lazy as all hell, he had me farm The Eye for Ashes of Alar every weekly reset for a couple years and I hated doing it. The day finally came where it eventually dropped and like most he was excited. But then the very next day he turned towards me and said "I don't think I like it." Yay
My guild seems to be running into an issue with alar. In p2 directly after the divebomb, and despite the tanks charging the moment she becomes targetable..she still casts one flame buffet. Would a tank taking the post divebomb knock back and then intercepting her stop it? Or a fire ele in the divebomb? The real issue is that we effectively run 4 tank heals so constant heavy raid dmg is best avoided if it all possible.
Can you use totems like snake traps to help spread out the damage during divebomb?
I cant find the answer anywhere so I appreciate any help =)
EDIT - Appreciate all the responses, another reason im asking this is because on Doom Lord Kazzak, totems count as entities in combat, so I was curious if they would also count as one in Alar.
I like exercising my mind to large extents and recently Iβve been working on Abenthyβs rock exercise. Believe it will float upwards, free as a bird, and all that.
Itβs very hard to get even close. And the whole mind splitting thing is even harder. Iβd like to hear how everyone elseβs experiments with it have gone, if youβve done any.
does anyone have an idea of how much it would cost to have alar base reduction if itβs only on one side of my nose? I really like how the shape of my nose looks overall, but the nostrils are very asymmetrical (one is flared way more than the other). I know this probably seems like something I could just google but I cant find what the cost would be specifically for a unilateral alar base reduction. any help is appreciated!
Iβve just read the books again and am wondering, is it possible that kvothe has made an neverending Alar, to keep himself from being himself? Somerimes it seems the real kvothe is coming forward, then he seems confused and shrugs it of, becoming kote again. And he put the thing holding his alar in the box in gis room? Hope someone has thought of thisone and wants to comment
I was talking with my friend the other day about how difficult it is to play a bass you're not used to while singing. You either can't focus on fine vocal control, or you keep missing the frets because your hands are used to different locations. There isn't too much to singing while strumming a guitar (or lute), but singing while playing melodies is really damn hard y'all. It's not unfair to say it requires you splitting your mind in two. Doubly so if you try to improvise at the same time, which is why people don't tend to do that.
So I'm thinking, one of Kvothe's most Mary Sue traits is his knack for being good at (almost) everything instantly - but his strong grasp on the alar could be explained by this, among other things. He's been at it since before he could walk, learning a bunch of instruments, dancing, acting, singing all the while. He's likely forgotten most of the exercises his dad had him do, but we get an idea of the complexity of the songs when he plays at the Aeolian. I'm not saying it's the same thing necessarily, but it might be close enough to make for decent alar cardio.
So yeah, I'm saying that his arcane power literally come from his music skills, making him an honest to god fantasy bard. His spellcasting ability has to be Charisma, cause it sure as shims isn't Wisdom - he's failed every damn saving throw so far and we know he has another book of failed Wis saves to go...
Thanks for reading my first post here and have a wise day!
