One of my black flowered viola seedlings is showing leaf veriagation, is this due to an illness or a random mutation? Just the one plant has done this and they are supposed to all be the same variety so do you think I should pot it separately and try and propogate it because it's interesting?

Streak 64: My favourite flowers are Violas

As I read the subject of the day, at first, I didn't have any idea. My favourite flower? I like plants, in fact I consider looking after house plants as one of my hobbies. It's a nice way to spend your time because they show gratitude for the attention. Problem was that these weren't flowering plants. They sometimes do flower, but I wouldn't say that's how people think of them.

Then, I got it. We've got a plant in Hungary called Viola of the Cape Land. The Cape as of the South African region. I've immediately the Wikipedia article about this plant. As it turned out, this plant is neither from South Africa nor a kind of Viola. It's an entirely different flower called SaintpauliaΒ ionantha and I don't have any clue why we call it as we do.

To be fair, I still like it. It's nice, simple and produces lots of flowers given enough sunshine. However, learning it's real name is another task. So, however it might not be a real Viola, I like real Violas, too. They remind me of my childhood when I could hike in forests all day long. As we stopped to have some rest, sometimes I even ate Violas. Their blossom is edible and as delicious as scented. Sweet flowers, sweet memories.
