#Ok Human - Weezer:

Hot take, but this is actually my favourite Weezer album. (keeping in mind that I’ve only been a fan since mid 2020). I’ve liked most of their other material up to this point, but my biggest problem with their discography has always been the fact that they seemingly never change. And whenever they did change it was always just basic pop music or a SLIGHTLY different kind of rock music.

This is the first genuinely unique Weezer album and I love it. Rivers’ song writing formula works shockingly well when being backed up by these beautiful, fun, and orchestral pop instrumentals. The lyrics are mostly really good, the production is immaculate, the vocals are great, and this thing is insanely well paced.

Tracks 1-6 make up one of the best song sequences that I’ve ever heard on an album. They’re all really good and flow together masterfully. β€œNumbers” specifically is a legitimately emotional experience. Something that you can rarely say about a Weezer song. The album’s 2nd half is slightly spottier but still very good.

It’s amazing how this album can be so impactful while still being so short. That half hour goes by in an instant, but it’s a wonderful half hour. Excellent album.

Best Songs: Numbers, Grapes of Wrath, & Aloo Gobi:

Weakest Songs: Mirror Image, Bird With a Broken Wing, & Dead Roses.

This album gets a light 9/10.

#Medicine At Midnight - Foo Fighters:

I’ve heard individual songs from pretty much all of their previous releases, but this is actually the first Foo Fighters project that I’ve listened to in full. And it’s a pretty good album, I must say.

It’s nothing I haven’t heard before but it’s very well executed for the most part. While consisting primarily of pretty normal, energetic, and loud rock songs, there are a few tracks with slightly more varied soundscapes such as β€œChasing Birds”, β€œShame Shame”, and The Title Track.

The album is decently paced, has some great vocals, and is mostly very well produced. Tracks like β€œWaiting on a War” & β€œLove

State of Grace

As a self proclaimed State of Grace stan, I need to commiserate with someone! This song is my top in Taylor’s discography by a mile, and probably in my top ten favorite songs of all time. What happened to State of Grace (Taylor’s Version)?

It could just be me. The first time I played it on Red TV release day, I was out of my mind excited. It’s the album opener and I had been waiting for this since she announced that she was re-recording. I love the opening drums more than I can describe, and all I can describe TV’s as is tinny? Compressed? The original’s is so powerful and U2-esque, but TV, I was shocked, it’s so different. And there are details that I love that are faint or just gone, like the guitar slide right before β€œso you were never a saint” (someone else said this, which is what inspired this post). I was comparing the two tracks and there are strings that come in right around the 3:15 mark that are just not there in TV, and they’re gorgeous in the original. Again, it could just be me, but has anyone else been super excited for their fave to be re-recorded, and been disappointed? Or does anyone have trepidation about the re-recordings to come?

RANK EM'

I'm a huge fan of bands like The Killers and Arcade Fire, so people have always told me that I would love U2, and not just the hits which I was pretty acquainted with. So all october I listened to the whole discography and, yes, they hype is real, They're Amazing. But I noticed that I like the newer stuff (last 20 years) a lot more than most on this sub. I like the cinematic production on albums like HTDAAB and SOI. These are big sounding albums, yet I still find them personal. I'm sure there's been a million ranking posts, but I would be really interested to see how long-time fan's lists compare with mine.

  1. The Joshua Tree (1987)
  2. All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000)
  3. Achtung Baby (1991)
  4. War (1983)
  5. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (2004)
  6. Songs of Experience (2017)
  7. Songs of Innocence (2014)
  8. The Unforgettable Fire (1984)
  9. Rattle and Hum (1988)
  10. Pop (1997)
  11. No Line On The Horizon (2009)
  12. Boy (1980)
  13. Zooropa (1993)
  14. October (1981)

I do think the band has been incredibly consistent over the 4 decades.

Ranking DAMN from worst to best

DAMN Ranked

DAMN is my all time favorite album. I love every single song from front to back. I can tell you the date I bought it, the first time I heard a song from It, and I know every single lyric from it. No other album has influenced how I listened to music moreso than this one has. Before DAMN I didn't even listen to songs from front to back because I didn't even realize that was the point of albums. Nothing shows how much I love this album like the fact that I've discovered TPAB since listening to DAMN for the first time, and even agreeing that TPAB is the better album, but DAMN is still my most listened to Kendrick album. Today, I was inspired by another post to rank each album from worst to best. And I wanted to give a more in depth analysis as to why each song was placed where it is because I have put a lot of thought into this. So without further adieu:

  1. BLOOD.

Putting this song low doesn't mean I hate it. As an intro this is a really strong song. The problem comes from comparing it to every other song on this album. BLOOD is not meant to be listened to outside of this album which in a way goes against what I think Kendrick meant for this album. This song is simply meant to tie the rest of the album together. It isn't even really fair to call this a song because it's really more of a soliloquy.

  1. GOD

I'd like to reiterate. This song being low on the list does not mean I hate it. As a matter of fact, I went and checked the stats before making this, and GOD is my 4th most listened to song on this album. This is more than my actual favorite song on the album. I do have a few issues with the song, like it's repetiviveness, and overall uncatchiness, but those are really just my opinion and shouldn't really affect the quality of the song. Because what I find uncatchy, someone else will find the opposite. And Kendrick never repeats himself for no reason. The song only scores low because the other songs have to score high. I would love to see someone try to compare this song to DNA, ELEMENT, or DUCKWORTH and actually make a convincing argument.

  1. HUMBLE

I could see someone try and say that this song should be put below the last one, but I don't think so. HUMBLE isn't Kendrick's #1 song for no reason. For one it's extremely catchy. #2 he gets really aggressive. It's rare Kendrick talks his shit and actually sounds like he's targeting someone. There are only like three songs that come to mind where I think he does it better than on this

/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 74: AUDIOSLAVE

We are going to continue our dive into side projects.

This time we are going to look at one of my favorites. They were a SuperGroup that were more than the sum of their parts. They were quietly political and lyrical, hard driving and softly reflective, straight up Rock mixed with incredibly melodic and complex music. They were a group of musicians at the height of their powers, and it showed.

And aside from a one-off show in 2017, we only had them for three albums over the course of 6 years in the early 2000’s.

So now we are going to look at a band that shot like a comet across the sky, and is now gone. They don’t even have a website. But they are one of the best side projects of all time. Yup. It’s time to look at AUDIOSLAVE.

Oh yes, that is their Discogs link. Here’s the one for Spotify.

About them

Timing is everything.

Soundgarden had broken up after internal tensions boiled over in 1997. Chris Cornell recorded, released and toured behind his first solo record, Euphoria Mourning, in 1999. But by 2001 he had sunk into depression and was using oxycontin and heroin. He needed a lifeline, and a new project was a great idea.

Rage Against the Machine had an amazing four album run, but came to a screeching halt as a band when Zach de la Rocha upped and quit in October of 2000.

So you had a singer looking for a band, and a band looking for a singer.

Enter Rick Rubin.

The legendary producer, impresario, and living beard convinced Rage guitarist Tom Morello, drummer Brad Wilk, and bassist Tim Commerford that they should recruit Cornell to be their new singer. According to legend, Rubin did this by playing them the Soundgarden tune [Slaves and Bulldozers.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEM-1kKcg7g&ab_c

Hey all, my girlfriends dad is a big U2 fan it's all he ever talks about because he knows I've been in a couple local bands. The problem is that he doesn't like me and it's hard to find icebreakers with him I was just wondering if I could get a little help. I've listened though a decent amount of their discography (his favorite album is Achtung Baby) and that just isn't enough to talk about, I was wondering if I could get some obscure facts or just little known band history? /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 73: THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS

Hey, did I mention that I like side projects?

Well I do. They are the chips with your fish. The fries with your burger. The bacon to your eggs. The jelly to your peanut butter. The ripple chips to your nutella.

Don’t judge me. Try it. You’ll thank me.

Speaking of things you’ll thank me for, today’s band is related to another group we have already covered. Yup. This week we are gonna focus on The Last Shadow Puppets.

About them

So let me point out that TLSP are not just a side project - they’re practically a SuperGroup. That does not mean that they were exposed to radiation and lived with a rat in the sewer (though technically I suppose that is possible). What it means is that they are composed of members of other already successful bands.

Sometimes these SuperGroups are one-offs, like Temple of the Dog or Ten Commandos or Sound City Players or (goddammit) Them Crooked Vultures.

Sometimes bands that fall apart come back in different and maybe improved forms, like Alter Bridge and Audioslave.

But every now and again, you get something like Mini Mansions or Eagles of Death Metal and The Voidz - that is, a band that the musicians do out of passion and renewed creativity.

TLSP are that kind of band - a passion project.

So you know how Josh has [The Desert Sessions](https://www.reddit.com/r/qots

/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 75: PEARL JAM

Here we are at post number 75 - so you know it’s time to focus on a great band.

They are iconic. They embody the Seattle sound. They are the Grateful Dead of this generation. They are one of the best selling bands of all time. They are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their fans are unbelievable. Their live performances are the stuff of legend.

You know them. You love them.

This week we look at PEARL JAM.

About them

Guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament were both in the band Green River. They were then both in Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. Those last two bands were fronted by Andy Wood, the one time roommate of Chris Cornell. Just when Mother Love Bone were on the cusp of success with a major label signing, Wood overdosed on heroin and passed away.

We know that the Seattle scene was an intimate one. Everyone knew everyone else. It’s been said that most of the audiences in those early Seattle shows were from other bands. Stone Gossard saw guitarist and old high school friend Mike McCready at a concert and decided that they should work together.

Gossard, McCready, and Ament started workshopping songs. They put together a demo tape and wanted to find themselves a drummer and a vocalist.

This demo tape was shared with Jack Irons. Irons had been the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Gossard, Ament, and McCready hoped to recruit him to be their kit man. Irons declined the offer (this time) - but he knew a vocalist that the boys would be interested in.

Eddie Vedder.

Vedder, who is now synonymous with Seattle, is actually from San Diego.

After listening to the demos, Vedder did what all the cool kids from San Diego do. No, he didn’t play the flute or go to the zoo. He went surfing.

Legend has it that while he was out riding the waves, the lyri

/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 72: THE VOIDZ

Side projects are the best.

Seriously. Isn’t it amazing to discover a band, delve into their discography, and then find even more content after all that?

Sometimes the music is a little bit different from the original material. Other times it could feel perfectly at home in the home band’s discography. Either way, they serve as an amazing bit of extra content when you’re longing for more.

Unfortunately these bands can also fly a bit under the radar. We’ve already brought attention to several of Josh Homme’s own projects. It’s time to look at another artist’s extended discography.

Today we revisit one New York rocker by the name of Julian. Oh yeah. It’s time to look at THE VOIDZ.

About them

Did you know that we covered The Strokes just over a year ago?

Man.

Well, quick update on them for you: they’re still fucking good. They’ve mastered that Indie-meets-post-Punk-Garage vibe and have built one heck of a fanbase.

No surprises there. Julian Casablancas is one hell of a musician, even if he is a lifelong Mets fan. And the rest of the band are tight. And they have been together since the late 90’s. And their signature sound does not allow for a whole lot of tinkering.

Fuck. The 90’s. That means that some of you were not born when The Strokes started making music.

Young’uns.

So even though The Strokes were going full bore and were awesome, Julian Casablancas had some ideas that just didn’t fit with his band. So he decided that he needed to spread his wings on a solo project.

The result of this experimentation was the 2009 album Phrazes for the Young. It was eight songs long, but the iTunes bonus edition got you another three. Though the critics liked it, Casablancas still felt that he kinda pulled his punches on this one and di

/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 76: RUSH

Perhaps it is because this past weekend was Thanksgiving in Canada. Perhaps it is because I’m feeling in a Prog Rock kinda mood. Maybe it is because Limelight was on the radio the other day. Maybe I’m just missing Neil Peart.

Whatever the reason, this week we are going to look at another quintessential Canadian band. They had one of the greatest drummers and lyricists of all time, paired with an amazing guitarist and maybe the most caucasian dude ever on a killer bass and vocals.

Yup. Time to Fly By Night. This week we look at RUSH.

About them

Rush are totally from Toronto, Canada - the neighborhood of Willowdale, to be exact. In the late 60’s, guitarist Alex Lifeson was looking to form a band. He and his buddy John Rutsey had been tight for years. They added bassist Jeff Jones to the mix and the three of them formed a band. They even had a gig in a church basement. They needed a name and Rutsey’s brother Bill suggested Rush. It stuck.

That first gig led to a second. But just hours before Rush were to perform, Jones dipped to go to a party instead. So Lifeson and Rutsey had a choice: cancel the gig, or get someone else.

So they cancelled the gig and Rush fell apart. The End.

Oh wait. They didn’t do that. Instead, Lifeson asked another friend, Gary Weinrib, to step in to play bass and sing lead. Weinrib agreed. Jones just straight up quit/was not invited to return, so Weinrib became the front man. He also decided that Gary Weinrib was not a real Rock Star name. So he adopted the stage name Geddy Lee.

I’d love to be able to tell you that it was a simple progression from there to the trio we all know today, but that would not be the truth. Let’s just say that there were multiple lineup changes and a shit-ton of nonsense before that happened. After three years of new members, expanding the band, collapsing the band, name changes and general dicking around, in 1971 they settled on a power trio of Lifeson, Lee, and Rutsey.

It was this power trio that played everything from [Hig
