I've always wanted to play the Cello, but I've never played string instruments, and I don't know where to begin.
Title.
In order to begin I assume getting a cello would be necessary. I don't like lessons, I'd rather learn on my own and from musician friends.
It's also probably bigger than me.

My dad doesnβt use reddit, but I wanted share a picture of the bass he made! It doesnβt have any strings yet, and itβs more of an art piece rather than a practical instrument for playing, but I thought it looked super cool, and that here would be the place to share it!

Hi! I composed a piece for string trio but I can't play any string instrument and I was wondering if it's actually possible to play. So I have a question: are thirds playable on viola? (I think that yes but I want to make sure)

Thoughts on this small piece? I'm a rock/metal guitarist.. these strings will be turned down a lot in the final mix, but thought I'd get some opinions from people that know more about these instruments than me.. ofc I know decent theory but am I missing stuff to make this sound bigger?

I've made a prototype of the neck of my new digital smart guitar-synthesizer. As I am disabled and I can't use ordinary instruments, I have an intent to make a device for people with hand injuries. It will have easy-to-clamp strings to give a real guitar experience. Are you interested in it?

Do any of you know if barring a fretted string instrument resets the nut?
Not sure if this is the place to ask and I apologize if itβs not!! Iβm just a little confused.
Iβm trying to play ukulele and guitar and sometimes a chord calls for playing all the strings of the same fret in a bar. So when it does this, is that chord made up of the notes along that fret? and then itβs different when you βbarreβ it and in that case it just resets the nut to be EADGBE or GCEA wherever you barre it? any help is much appreciated!! thanks!!
I tried googling it but Iβm bad with wording google searches so I got nothing lol

Anyone else hate the scratchiness/"extra-musical" sounds when starting but eventually come to love it as just a unique part of playing a string instrument?
When I first started playing many years ago, I hated any and all "rough" sounds I would make when trying to play music - so much so that I would actually play louder to try and mask said sounds. But as I'm wrapping up my master's and really sinking my teeth into the cello suites, especially listening to all the cello recordings, I'm actually learning to love all the imperfections of playing a purely acoustic instrument and found a lot of my problems as a novice were coming from trying too hard to avoid any and all aural "blemishes". Just curious to hear the perspectives of other bassists who might've gone through this same thing.

TIL that when Jimi Hendrix was a kid he would carry a broom to emulate guitar but his father refused to buy him a guitar. At age 15 Hendrix found a ukulele amongst the garbage he was removing from an older woman's home. She told him that he could keep the instrument, which had only one string.

What is this violin looking thing the girl is playing. It doesn't sound like any violin I've ever heard, has only 3 strings, and I'm pretty sure it's polish. It's the instrument used at the start of "ladies of the woods" from The Witcher 3's soundtrack.

Any string instrument players?
Does anyone play the violin/ viola/ cello/ string bass?
I play the violin and am looking for others in the Birmingham area to play classical music with. Looking to start regular practice sessions. Potentially down the road we could play live at weddings or elsewhere.

I can hear when string instruments aren't tuned to 440Hz
I already noticed this a while back, when steinway and sons posted a short clip on their instagram, which just sounded off to me. To my friend, who also has some years of musical training, it sounded just normal. I later figured out, that the piano in the clip was actually a quarter tone sharp/flat. I also notice it when listening to guitars and other string instruments, but not with peoples voices or wind instruments. I also can't hear if something is played in baroque tuning (probably because it's pretty close to a semi tone)
Is this a common phenomenon? It's probably not that useful to have that ability but it's still interesting to me.
