A list of puns related to "State (polity)"
This presumes that Palpatine permanently died over Endor, and the status of the Deep Core fleets are left ambiguous. As I understand it, Palp's return was disastrous for the longevity of these quasi-states as they squandered much of their remaining military assets first upon the NR, then themselves, and finally being pulled along for the ride with Palaptine's wunderwaffe. Kaine probably had the most to lose, given his realm's previous isolation and the considerable economic capital the PA held (the Jaemus and Yaga Minor shipyards, Muunilist, etc) - not to mention the huge fleets he brought with him there after Endor. I like to imagine that sans Palpatine's return, he would have become more interested in peace with the New Republic insofar as to plug his economic weight back into the wider galactic market.
The Republic for their part would want to impose some terms of their own I'm sure. Abolishment of slavery as an institution is an obvious and reasonable demand. But I'm curious if they would have considered peace offers given how, generally, the momentum of the GCW remained on their side. Or they may also just wait for some of these warlord fiefdoms to collapse, given their inherent illegitimacy and lack of soft power.
I think it would be a very interesting "what if" given how ideologically opposed the NR was to them, even in spite of any fatigue from years of war. Likewise would Imperial hardliners just sit around and let it happen?
Our branch is in Washington state, so weβre entitled to a 10 minute paid break for every 4 hours worked AND a 30 minutes unpaid break for every 5 hours worked. Depending on who the head cashier is, a 5 hour shift either gets a choice between a 15 minute paid break OR a 30 minute unpaid break, or just a 15 minute break. I looked up corporate policy, and theyβre following the first part for all stores, but I guess nobody scrolled down to see the Washington state section of the policy. I trust Management would fix the issue if they were aware of it, but the problem is they donβt believe me when I bring stuff like this up. When I told them we donβt sanitize the carts because nobody from management told the head cashiers that, they told me I was mistaken and that I couldnβt possibly see every single person who does the carts (I work in sterling with a giant clear wall between me and the sanitizer). This is typical of the responses I get when I bring stuff like this up, to the point we basically just pretend management doesnβt exist and ignore anything they say because itβs generally wrong.
Any advice? Should I show them the policy? Should I just deal with it? Should I go to HR?
Some days I do so many code 50βs my legs will chafe until they rash if I donβt put baby powder on, and the concrete floor is so hard I had to spend $200 on special boots so the floors would stop blistering my feet. So the extra break would be really nice.
Let's say the city of San Francisco wants to (for example) enter a trade deal with Israel, or impose taxes on any products produced outside of California.
Would this be legal?
Small Island city-states like Malta, Java, Republic of Venice, Minoans, Malacca, Caribbean and Polynesia countries, RyΕ«kyΕ« Kingdom, the Tonga empire, the Maori etc.
Often these policies/states based on small/medium islands had fascinating histories and struggles for survival.
Also would love examples from published fiction
So we've all seen maps of ancient empires. Anyone who dips their toes into classical history probably has a rough idea of the general "shape" of the Roman Empire for example (at least, the fleeting territorial peak under Trajan). What always bugs me when I look at these "maps" of ancient Empires is the question of how exactly historians settled on where to literally draw the line.
The most egregious examples I have come across are things like this showing the ancient Middle East between the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and the Rise of the Achaemenids, or this monstrosity from Wikipedia. (The Assyrian Empire in particular seems to arbitrarily gain and lose vast swathes of territory from one map to the next, at least maps of the Roman and Persian Empires are somewhat consistent.)
How on earth can we know the exact boundaries of the Median Empire to such a degree of accuracy? Why were they given huge amounts of Iran but not that one sliver of Northern Anatolia? How do we establish the border with the Babylonian Empire? Not to mention the straight line across Arabia in the Assyrian Empire map.
Is there any way to know with a reasonable degree of accuracy where the territory of one ancient Empire began and another ended? Did such concepts as defined borders even exist in the ancient world (beyond obvious natural geographic boundaries like rivers and mountain ranges)? If not, how then do/did historians settle on approximations that we see on modern maps of these bygone political entities?
So hello everyone,
I personally stopped following season 2 after the premiere but still look at the sub from time to time in order to see what's up with the show. From what I've heard I don't retrt my decision so far. Today I'd like to discuss an issue that just occurred to me, firstly I'll recap what I think is the current state of the show. If this is wrong feel free to correct me.
The Union is a cult. It is all the world's religions merged into one being. Therefore in a sense they are basically a theocracy where everyone has to observe their religion.
The Polity is a secular state with no official religion and is every nation merged into one. (Presumably they also have no religion since the Union is all the world's religions merged into one???)
War started for reasons but the Unions current aim is to kill people with nanites and absorb their minds and bodies to join with a concept known as 'the flow'. It is the beliefs if the Union that this is essentially an afterlife with ones mind preserved forever in a paradise like simulation with all the other souls the nanites have observed.
There is evidence in the show that this is true, they have spoken to people observed by the flow. It isn't some sort of trick or deception done by a shadow elite, they all sincerely belief this is the true nature or things and have spoken to people from inside the flow that would make them think this is the true nature of things.
So with this in mind why would the Polity be against this religion? Now obviously forcing people to join the flow is morally wrong to do, it's pretty horrific and I'm not trying to say the Union are good people. Rather however I want to ask why is it that the population of Pokity hasn't already converted to the Union?
Their afterlife seems to be one you can directly observe and confirm to exist for yourself. It preserves all parts of the mind, essentially all parts of you. So therefore what they say is true, you can go into paradise forever by helping them out. So why would the Polity hesitate?
The only thing I can work out is if they think there is something more transcdendent about people, such as a soul, that the Union aren't talking into account. Or that they think there is an even better place the person goes to after death if they let themselves not be absorbed by the flow.
Wouldn't those though make the Polity be the more superstitious side here? Wouldn't the Union be the more scientific of the pair since it has actual onserv

The declaration of Hungary and Samoa as Christian nations have brought that topic of political theology new relevancy. This and much more are topics inteded to be covered in r/christianpolities.
