Not surprised by the 80% ashkenazi Jew since I know 3 grandparents were from Russia/Poland. However, my moms dad apparently was a Sephardic Jew from Spain and fled to Greece during the diaspora. Can someone help me and explain why I don’t see more Spanish/ Greek and why there is so much Italian?

Books about Spanish diaspora from civil war/in or post-Francoism, 20th ct. onward

Not Latinos. Definitely NOT Conquistadors. People who left Spain to arrive in different countries fleeing the fallout of the Civil War and/or seeking to escape Franco’s dictatorship.

Or even who arrived earlier (i.e. 19th ct. Euro immigration waves), I’ll take anything at this point.

Especially looking for anything on the Spanish diaspora in the US, Canada, and other English or non-Spanish speaking countries, since it’s so much more rare.

It’s incredibly difficult to find anything. Have tried for a long time, years. Libraries don’t seem to have it. Online, even utilizing - β€œ(word)” (i.e. β€œspanish americans” -β€œlatino” etc.) in search engines doesn’t do it - maybe due to a dearth of books on the topic, maybe because the people described in such a book are mostly still living, so it’s recent to present day history. And realistically, because most authors will find it more credible to at least partly get into the overall topic of Spain’s history, not just a specific time period or subgroup of emigrants, so removing certain key phrases (relating to colonization) removes some possibly relevant book results that could be buried deep in searches.

My family is part of this group and there seem to just be very few of us in English speaking places in general. The first group I named is mistaken for Spanish by misuse of the word. The second, we have nothing to do with, and (at least my family) personally want nothing to do with the uglier history of, because we weren’t part of a wealthy group who came to colonize anyone centuries ago, instead a much smaller scattered group of people who were working class immigrants and came to escape negative circumstances in recent times.

Much gratitude for any answers!

edit: I am ok with English or Spanish language books. Still trying to (re-)learn the language, unfortunately, but if in Spanish it will go to my future reading list.

What do you think of the "Hispanidad" and day celebrating the Spanish Diaspora?

Spain celebrates the "dia de la Hispanidad" in October. It's a day to celebrate the Spanish speaking world, but in New World countries, like Argentina or Bolivia, it has been renamed to things such as "Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity" and "Day of Decolonization" due to controversies regarding the fate of Amerindians and colonialism. I see some discussion about it crop up every year in the Americas, so I wondered what the Old World thinks about it.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Written summary of the world of The New Order: Age of Division (By Sov II)

For those who don't know, it refers to a video that I've shown that is about a modern TNO world that follows specific paths to create a world. It goes something like this: (Warning, a very long read)

  • Speer won the civil war and overcame both the Hardliners and the G4, creating Dengist Germany in the process. However, his growth is hampered by the Second West Russian War, which while it ended in a stalemate, led to both powers feeling humiliated, meaning Germany's power in Europe is reduced. Even after crushing the slave revolt, pockets of resistance remained in parts of Eastern Europe and now the Caucasus, though their allegiances are currently unknown. Speer is replaced by former SS-officer, Hubert Meyer, who kept Germany as conservative as possible. A new page will turn, however, as his health deteriorates and combined with the Frankfurt Stock Market crash of 2007 throws the nation in economic disarray. It is only a matter of time in who could replace Meyer and if they'll be able to bring Germany back to her feet. Current members of the Pakt include Ireland, Serbia, Hungary, Portugal, Denmark, Benelux and the French State.
  • The surrounding European countries aren't faring that much better. Britain became an isolated state following the Civil War, but Nigel Farage is making friendly moves to formalize relationships with Germany. The French State under Jean-Marie Le Pen has been an incompetent state with the Frankfurt crash only worsening it. Even with Burgundy gone, the state remained under German thumb, and a civil war seems inevitable. Serbia and Hungary are showing signs of wanting to break away from German influence as nationalism grows in their nations. Portugal itself had the ultra-militarists win the Portuguese civil war, but that didn't stop a period of coups and counter-coups. Even under Jose Manuel Duarte's regime, pro-democracy elements in the army still exist, waiting their moment to strike. Spanish Republicans won on the Spanish side of the Iberian wars, restoring the Republic. However, it remains a very flawed democracy, with fraud, intimidation and putschism being common, as well as paramilitary forces like the National Redemption Front still existing in some capacity and like with Britain, keeping a policy of neutrality. Romania, still under the rule Mikhail I has become a thorn to Germany with their acceptance of refugees and minorities to their nation.
  • Italy managed to move to Democracy, but instability rocked the nation as the Pia

Isn't it about time to stop pretending that there are just two Jewish diasporal groups? (Hint: Not any Jew from Europe is Ashkenazi; while not any other Jew is Sephardic). Also, "Mizrahi" as a name for the latter Jews (anybody not from European countries/Yiddish speaker) didn't exist till the 1930s.

Since "Liturgy" is not synonymous to "Genetics", a thing that the Jews today sadly do not know, and because the Ashkenazi rite had took over Europe as a whole in the 16th Century (Yiddish replaced many smaller local Jewish languages) while Sephardic rites took over the Oriental World (sans Yemen, mostly); I find myself write this post for any Jews interested. I will mention each diasporal group by their demographic weight:

  1. Eastern European Jews - The Jews who sat from Russia in the East to the realms of the Polish Border are not stemmed mostly/only of the Ashkenazim who settled in Medieval Northern France and Germany. These Jews are recorded to have set all over these lands all along since the 2nd Century AD and have been around and kicking while Ashkenaz was still a functioning Jewish Culture. They are estimated by Cecil Roth in 1969 to be twice (if not more, by others) in size than the Ashkenazim by the year 1500. It may be that they're mostly descendants of Jews who fled from Turkey in the 7th Century and later from Iraq and Persia, where half of the Jews had settled in exile and were mostly found at till the 12th Century AD. There is a reason to suspect some may be of Khazar descent, as well as descendants of locals who married into the Jewish communities throughout the region (as in any Jewish diaspora). The reason why people today have German sounding surnames is that their ancestors have lived under the Austro-Hungarian Empire that forced all it's surnames-lacking residents to adopt names in the German language which the rulership used (the higher you paid, the better name you have got from the clerks; "Stine" and "Berg" were among the cheapest as far as I know, while flowers cost more..) between 1787 to 1831. These folks eventually migrated during the 17th Century and onwards westwards to the other part of Europe and their descendants became part of the newly established Jewish communities in Austria, Germany, France and beyond (Dutch Jews, for instance, were found to be genetically distant as heck from German Jews but closer to both EEJ and Dutch Non-Jews). There are 2 recorded clusters amongst European Jews, one is probably what was the one which stemmed from the historic Ashkenazic (sadly no Archaeogenetic study was conducted that I'm aware of..) and the other is from the Eastern European Jews who adopted the name "Ashkenazim" later on.
  2. Sephardim - The descendant of the Iberian Jews. They were estimated to have been at above 400,000 by

Descendants of US slavery Diaspora and Tribes/Ethnic Groups
  1. African-American-#ADOS (Formerly known as Freedmen)

The term β€œAfrican-American” is the name of ethnicity of people who are descendants of enslaved Africans who were enslaved within the United States. Elon Musk is not an AA, your ancestors have to be enslaved in the U.S to be an AA.

We’re probably the largest ethnic group in our diaspora. We’ve created the most emulated culture.

  1. Louisiana-Creole (African-American sub-ethnicity)

People descended from the inhabitants of colonial Louisiana before it became a part of the U.S. during the period of both French and Spanish rule. Louisiana-Creole People can be any race. Black Creoles are descendants of slavery as well.

Just like African-Americans, Creole people are very inclusive! They have the best cuisine in America

  1. Congau-People (Formerly known as Americo-Liberians)

A Liberian ethnic group of African-American descent.

Historically, African-Americans always had a close connection with them, but in modern times, we have little to no connection at all with the Americo-Liberians.

African-Americans who couldn’t afford the trip to Liberia created two communities in America named after the country they couldn’t go to. β€œLiberia, North Carolina” β€œLiberia, South Carolina” πŸ‡±πŸ‡·

I have to visit their Republic (Liberia) before I die.

  1. Gullah-Geechee (African-American sub-ethnicity)

The Gullah-Geechee are African Americans who live in the Lowcountry region of the U.S. states of Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina, in both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands.

The Gullah Geechee people have a culture that differs from Main-stream African Americans. They’re unique, because they’re arguably the most African people in our diaspora. They speak an English dialect called β€œGullah” that has retained many African Words. Their culture has significant African Influence, generally speaking.

  1. Black-Nova Scotians

Black Nova Scotians are Black Canadians whose ancestors primarily date back to the Colonial United States as enslaved people or freemen, and later arrived in Nova Scotia, Canada during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

  1. Merikins

The Merikins were African-American Marines of the War of 1812 – former African slaves who fought for the British against the US in the Corps of Colonial Marines and then, after post-war service in Bermuda, were established as a community in the south of Trinidad in 1815–16.

The towns that they’ve built and their descendants still exist today!

##Tashir Pizza's mass poisoning lab results have arrived

179 people were taken to the hospital last week after eating in multiple locations of the pizza chain.

The water results were clean. Dozens of surface samples tested positive with salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and listeria.

The salmonella was in a sauce, meats, mushrooms, grated cheese, and chicken products; it appears lettuce was a major source. Hospital patients' feces also tested positive for salmonella.

The authorities are also inspecting several food suppliers, including the mayonnaise (Father and Son Avagyan Ltd) and poultry (Kurnikov Ltd) factories to uncover the original source.
