A list of puns related to "Rochester"
Be careful out there folks. People are crazy today. Wegmans is a zoo. People thinking the apocalypse is coming.
I have moved here few months ago and is facing my first extreme winter and snow. Although itβs fun, what do people do daily for fun in or around city during this time? Would like to meet people to hangout!
Hello!
25 y/o guy, I've been planning a move after I finish grad school with my Masters in Social Work, and Rochester has consecutively made my list after multiple rounds of research on a wide assortment of different places. I thought I would post here after lurking for a bit to ask for some insight from people who actually live in the city! I don't mind the cold weather and the gloominess that I've heard is associated with Rochester - I'm from Southcoast MA so I'm used to cold weather generally. My biggest question really is how lively is Rochester? Does it have a nice busy downtown scene during the weekends with different things to do, bars and bookstores and coffee shops/cafes? Young people to become friends with? Progressive/liberal mindset?
Anything you particularly like about living in Rochester? Dislike?
Finally, if I moved here alone would I have an awfully hard time finding friends? (obviously this is dependent on many things, but im just asking in a general cultural sense how friendly the people of Rochester are).
Thanks so much in advance!
EDIT: Thank you guys so much for your input and suggestions! I definitely need to plan a trip to Rochester to check it out for myself, but I definitely think it has a vibe that matches me :) Any suggestions on what to do during a weekend trip would be appreciated! Thank you so much!
According to their grad email, I am Matthew and my friend is Craig. We are both women. Please further entertain me.
Iβve been seeing these threads on other city subs and I know us Rochesterians have plenty to add.
EDIT: To clarify, this is a thought excerise, not me fishing for advice on how to live here.
Iβm in search of a local shop that carries hoodies with Rochester, NY on them. This is a gift for someone visiting from overseas. Ideas on where to look? I did a basic search and found very little other than CafΓ© Press and the like.
Edit- Thanks to all of the people that took the time out of their day to answer. This girl loves to shop so who knows how many places we will visit!!
Hey everyone,
This is a weird question but I want to have a better understanding about life here since I will most likely live here for the foreseeable future.
I moved to Rochester last year with my American husband. I am from abroad and life has been quite an adjustment for me since moving here. One thing that I find hard to even believe is the difference in what seems to be the nice and not nice neighborhoods in Rochester. I often feel like I am not living in the same city from the news which I hear about all the violence. Nobody I know is affected by this violence or crime but it often makes me wish I could hear the other side of the story from the people who are stuck in neighborhoods full of violence and poverty. It makes me sad that so many people seem to be stuck in these areas and there is not much hope for them to find a better life. In my country all the poverty is in the countryside and cities are quite rich and there are no bad neighborhoods or dangerous areas.
Did anybody grow up in these areas? How were you able to escape. I really want to volunteer or find ways to help people but as a foreigner I don't know if I'm overstepping my welcome here in the US.
I often ask my husband and his friends about this and while he has helped me understand quite a bit he is from a small town and knows more about my home country more than he does about the history of cities in the USA.
So I guess all I'm asking here is to help explain why these areas exist and how can an average person help to improve them since I live a life so different than people in the same city as me.
Edit: Okay, I'm gonna get off my computer for now but please keep asking questions and I'll answer as I'm available, or message me!
I've noticed a few questions here recently about the best places to get vaccinated, and about issues with vaccine cards and Excelsior Passes.
I've been working with the state at their main Rochester site since April (first the Dome then downsized to the REOC), and I've also done a few shifts at a state vax site out of Rochester and a PCR testing site out of town.
I've been working with Monroe County at their vaccine sites since September as well, mainly the Greece and Pittsford sites but the MCC too, and I've done a handful of shifts at a pop-up rapid testing site.
I am NOT a nurse, I do the computer and support stuff, so I can NOT answer any medical questions-- if you ask any I will tell you to talk to your primary care provider or come into a site and request a consultation with the medical providers on staff.
I can answer (or direct someone to the resources to find the answer) most questions about how the sites are run, appointments, issues with vaccine cards/records/Excelsior, etc.
I verified my identity with a moderator. I am doing this on my own to hopefully help people in this subreddit, this is NOT on behalf of the state or county. I will NOT engage with antivaxxers. If anyone questions the efficacy of vaccines here I will tell you go to your primary care provider or ask for a consult at a vax site.
Ask away!
Iβd prefer advice from people who purchased a home recently- since the Covid housing boom. Iβve been starting to research home buying and ownership online, but a lot of the advice is very general or clearly not applicable to our area. Would love to gain some wisdom from you all. For context, we are looking in the city proper, not the suburbs (I wish). Thank you!
I was looking at houses in Rochester, and noticed one had gone off the market recently. I came to find out it had been turned into a rental just a few days after it was bought.
It pains me to see that the landlord is charging $2k/mo in rent for a house that has a $1,150 monthly payment (assuming no downpayment at all). Just seems extremely dystopian and incredibly unjust.

"Dear University of Rochester Community:
We write with a follow-up to yesterdayβs brief alert message. First, thank you for your patience as we are working through the implications of the changes to the start of the spring semester. Second, we would like to share with you a deeper understanding of the circumstances that caused us to change course so abruptly. This message will take you through some of the considerations that went into the decision, and how we are planning for this temporary change.
When we made our initial plans to begin the semester in person, we were reasonably assured that this was the right choice. However, yesterday, the reported number of new daily infections registered in Monroe County was over 4,000, a three-fold increase from the previous week. This alarming increase caused our University and Medical Center teams and our local officials to immediately reassess our assumptions and to recommend that we respond accordingly.
The volatility of the infection rate in the Rochester region makes it impossible to precisely predict future infection rates, at least until the spike in omicron variant infections subsides. As you know, the steps we have already takenβrequiring vaccinations, boosters, and universal maskingβshould be enough to keep our students safe on campus. Additionally, we know the effects of omicron appear generally milder than previous COVID variants. But it is not only our studentsβ health and safety that played into our decision. We had to consider our faculty and our staff, the URMedicine healthcare system, and the broader community within which the University of Rochester co-exists.
Although vaccinated individuals (like our students) are unlikely to become seriously ill themselves, they may still infect others in the community who may become sick and create an additional burden on our already over-taxed local health system. They may also expose others in the community who do not become sick but are nevertheless required to isolate and stay out of work for a period of days determined by federal, state, and county guidelines. The increased infection and isolation rates would further strain our staffing resources in virtually every part of the University, from dining to nursing to facilities maintenance to student services. Even before the anticipated arrival of students for the spring semester, a number of administrative and medical

I will gladly give out internet high fives to anyone who reports back their service in the war on snow

We all have heard stories about horrible dillweed restaurateurs mistreating staff especially in pandemic times, abusing customers, skirting food safety regs and legal loopholes, and just being total awful people. A few recent events come to mind, but I don't want to name names in this original post. Go nuts in the comments.
ANYWAY what local restaurants offer both great food and a great work environment where you know staff (FOH/BOH) are treated with respect and fair wages? Good places with caring owners. I don't care if you've got thirty six Michelin stars or whatever - if you're a weasel I don't want to patronize your establishment.
I'll start! I know Chick Magnet in Penfield is run and staffed by some really nice folks, far as I'm aware. Chatted with the owner briefly and always get a good vibe. Staff are always kind even during their lunch rush (customers seem relatively patient, too, which is nice). Plus their smokey chick sandwich with a side magnet sauce and a loaded nest are *chef kiss*.
And if you are a local restaurant owner (food trucks count), feel free to share how you try to make your staff feel worthwhile and valued!
Personal stories are rad!
Iβll go first I was driving down the road the other day and some chick trying to pull out of a McDonalds pulls out into the road without looking. I slam on the brakes and lay on the horn. She then proceeds to take both hands off the wheel and dual hand flip me off before taking a left into the other lane and making all the oncoming cars in the other lane stop as well. It was the stupidest fucking thing I have ever seen in my life.
