After Julia Chinn’s death in 1833, Richard Mentor Johnson got nominated to be Martin Van Buren’s running-mate. Critics attacked him for having a relationship with one of his own slaves. Johnson responded to this by stating, “Unlike Jefferson, Clay, Poindexter and others; I married my wife under the eyes of God, and apparently he has found no objections.” Johnson also had two more relationships with slaves after her death, but that could’ve been him trying to fill the empty void in his heart. We can never say for sure, but we can speculate on how he felt after the death of Julia Chinn.

My time at CDC included working as an infectious disease epidemiologist and four years in charge of emergency response and preparedness and serving as acting director of the agency in 2009 during the H1N1 pandemic. More recently, as part of our ongoing commitment to the health of our nation and its people, I’ve been helping people understand that while COVID has affected every community, it has not affected every community with the same intensity.
