From 1307-1312, Pope Clement V helped King Phillip IV of France destroy the Knights Templar. Hundreds of Templars were executed under charges of heresy and other offences and the Pope abolished the order. Today, the issue of the Templars guilt or innocence is hotly debated among historians.

I have been randonauting for a year now and quite a few of my points dove me to discover stuff about Knights Templar in Venice. Today, after a long pause, i set my intent to Knights Templar and at the exact point was this graffiti. 1312 is the year the order was suppressed by Pope Clement V. Fuck.

Danteβs inferno strongly criticises the Catholic Church. However, Dante Alighieri also criticised a fair number of Popes; Nicholas III, Boniface VIII, Celestine V, and Clement V. Alighieri criticised them for their greed, political ambition, and Nepotism.

Rather than executing them, Pope Clement V and King Philip IV settle on just banishing the Templar knights from their realm.
In addition I suggest that they could go to Iberia, where, along existing orders such as Calatrava, Santiago and Avis, they finish the "Reconquista" earlier and maybe even push further into the Magreb.

The Military Order of Christ were the Portuguese successors of the Knights Templar after the dissolution of their Order by Pope Clement V in 1312. They would play a key role for Portugal during the Reconquista, and the subsequent reconstruction of the country following its great wars.

Why did Pope Clement V remove the Papacy to Avignon?
I've read about this many times, but I've never seen a motive supplied. It seems like a strange move, considering the history of Rome and the Holy See.

Villandraut, France. This once powerful castle was built for Bertrand de Goth (who became Pope Clement V) in the early 14th century. It was designed to be both well defended and to be a sumptuous residence for the Pope when he was in Aquitaine. I'll post more in the comments.

What was Venice's reaction to Pope Clement V's order dissolving the knights templar? How did they respond to effectively handing over the crusading business to the Genoan allied knights Hospitaller?
Did Venice try to pressure the Pope against the dissolution? Was Templar property in Venetian territory handed over to the Hospitallers? Did Venice offer sanctuary to Templar knights and serjents fleeing persecution? Did Venice attempt to reconcile with the Hospitallers?
Any answer would be greatly appreciated.
