I saw this exchange on Facebook, where someone referred to prostitution as ‘the world’s oldest profession,’ and someone else took offence.
I myself didn’t see what’s wrong with using that euphemism, but am I missing something?
To be clear, the exact comment the first person made was “Prostitution isn’t a wrong thing. It’s the worlds oldest profession.”
Like the title says., we know that prostitution has been around for quite some time. To my limited knowledge, I know that it existed on a rather wide-spread commercial stage by the Ancient Rome.
I assume it predates Roman times, just how old is prostitution? and when did it become truly 'wide-spread' (that is; available to the average Joe, rather than being limited to the wealthy)
EDIT: While what u/Apatomoose has said is valid, im more curious in cases involving humans. Any literature would be welcome as well

This really annoys me. It’s complete bullocks. You can’t sell your body if no one can buy it. Second oldest? Probably not but at least that’s coherent.
Now, I get this is a tad pedantic but it’s really annoying. Saying hoeing is the worlds oldest profession implies a certain legitimacy in the same way brands saying “since 1226” makes people think “there must be a reason it’s survived this long.”
Let’s talk about the people actually producing things. They deserve that respect. I mean farming is arguably the worlds first profession. One of the most respectable occupations. Like you just a hoe. You’re not producing anything. The only reason you have food is because you have a hole. Congrats. What a productive member of society.

Edit: hunting is not a profession. Gathering is not a profession. Specialization takes place in agricultural society. But y’all are definitely missing the point if that’s your main objection. A good commenter pointed out that their opinion is that fisherman is the first profession. I don’t completely buy this but it is an absolutely fantastic example of how professions 100% existed before prostitution.
Edit 2: I don’t think it’s evil, it’s just not the first profession.
