Gelatin supplementation as applied to musculoskeletal injury prevention

**I'd like to preface this by acknowledging that I'm not aiming to provide any concrete medical advice or anything of the sort, just wanted to share an interesting article my brother sent my way as is relevant to climbing**

The synopsis is effectively that "adding gelatin to an intermittent exercise program improves collagen synthesis and could play a beneficial role in injury prevention and tissue repair," which could be translational to climbing recovery given the stress climbing places on tendons/ligaments.

It goes without saying that gelatin supplementation isn't by any means a replacement for rest, nor is it an excuse to rest any less, but definitely interesting to consider the biology behind the sport we're all here to enjoy! Thoughts? Anyone stumble across similar publications?

Musculoskeletal Injury While Waiting

Hey all, I have a concern and would like your thoughts. I have been selected to attend OCS later this year, but I'm currently having some problems with my ankle. My 1st thought was to not seek help because I didn't want it in my records. But, I'd hate to hold out and have a simple issue become worse because I failed to address it. So, I just went and saw the Doc and he said it might just be a calcium build up, but he might recommend me to do PT. I know there's something about having needed PT within 6months that can make me ineligible. Question is, is that 6months before applying or 6months before training? Do you think they'll review my health records again before I go in for training? I don't know what to do, I feel like I have to choose between my health and my career.

I’ve been getting an absurd number of seemingly random debilitating and chronic musculoskeletal injuries for the past 7 years; what on Earth is going on?

Dear Doctors and medical professionals,

Thank you for taking time to read my post. Any help at all would really change my life. I’m at the very end of my ability to cope. I will try to keep it brief.

Background:

Ever since 20 y/o I have been getting injured over and over and over again - it feels like a gust of wind can tear a tendon.

When I was 20 I developed DeQuervains tendinitis in my left wrist. Had that for 1.5 years. Lots of intensive physio. And then that wrist had on and off again issues for years.

When I was 22 I developed some undiagnosed/unknown chest problem that left it hard to breathe for a solid 6 months. When they were trying to figure out what was going on they randomly discovered bicuspid aortic valve.

When I was 25 I developed severe stomach issues that left me eating an elimination diet for a year. Had an endoscopy and colonoscopy - found nothing. Doc said it was likely a biome issue.

When I was 27 (last year) BOTH of my wrists gave out for a solid 10 months. Could barely lift anything. Intensive physio again. Had to use a dictation program on my computer to continue school.

When I turned 28 (two months ago) my jaw started cramping up for no reason, andi developed TMJ. Still doing physio for that. Getting better but could barely talk and eat anything but soup for a while.

Four weeks ago, I shit you not (pardon the French) both of my shoulders started hurting, and I was diagnosed with tendinitis in my shoulders.

This is not to mention all the little medical issues I’ve had over the years.

I’m at my wits end y’all. And, to top off the new TMJ and shoulder issues I’m battling a nasty case of genital molluscus right now.

What do y’all think about what’s happening? Am I just incredibly unlucky or could all of the musculoskeletal issues be linked some how to a diagnosable and potentially treatable illness?

Thank you.

Training and musculoskeletal injuries

I remember reading somewhere that the training for things like special ops and firefighters is really hard on your body and can have some lasting effects.

I'm not talking about injuries from things like falls (unless they're that common), more in the realm of "my back hurts from carrying a lot of heavy shit for years."

I was a high-level athlete for a few years so I know what it's like to have everything hurt all the time from frequent high-intensity workouts and repetitive strain injuries. Is this also a common problem in special ops?

I realised recently that almost all the significant musculoskeletal injuries I’ve sustained in adulthood occurred pretty spontaneously while abusing meth.

Has anyone else had this? I herniated a lumbar disc deadlifting a few years back (never happened before in ten years of weightlifting), gradually damaged the meniscus in my knee and couldn’t even weight bear at the height of tweaking, and just the other week the ganglion cyst (which usually never bothers me) popped in my wrist just from pushing my nephew on the swing.

My wrist is okay now but my back and knee feel inflamed and stiff now that I’m using again. I guess it’s the lack of body awareness when we overdo things without even realising. But I think also meth probably weakens and dehydrates our tissues and structures no matter how much we try to look after our health. We’re all rickety and prone to snap like twigs. Be careful peeps, loves πŸ’•

SIBO & Musculoskeletal Injuries

Has anybody else noticed a correlation?

Ever since I started having GI problems, I seemingly injure my muscles doing normal things. And then always take forever to heal, reinjure eventually, or seemingly become chronic. My physical therapists and orthopedic doctors wonder wtf I am doing.

Maybe it's malabsorption of nutrients or just not eating enough. But curious if others are dealing with this also.

Experience? Theory on why? Things that help?

Thanks!

Does CBD inhibit healing of wounds and musculoskeletal injuries? It seems likely.

The negative impact of NSAIDs on healing has been well studied (link 1/2/3).

Essentially, NSAIDs provide initial symptomatic pain relief, but they have been linked to poor fracture/tendon healing as our bodies healing process requires significant inflammatory process/markers. Essentially, NSAIDs blunt the body's production of biochemicals called prostaglandins, that typically flood injury sites. Prostaglandins start processes that contribute to pain, but they also jumpstart our body's natural healing process.

With that being said, some "natural" anti-inflammatories such as curacumin (Tumeric) somehow β€œenhance granulation tissue formation, collagen deposition, tissue remodeling and wound contraction.”

In essence, this suggests that all anti-inflammatories are not created equally. I currently received an MRI that showed my ACL graft was "attenuated, gracile, and thinned." All of this is to suggest the graft didn't take particularly well. I consumed high CBD cannabis edibles to sleep at night throughout my recovery and am now curious if the solid nights of sleep and reduced pain came at the expense of weaker tensile strength of my ACL graft.

I explore the science more below.
