I've discovered an unexpectedly Jungian TV show. Lost (2004). It's full of Jungian symbolism, so much so that the official Lost wiki (link) lists Jungian concepts and archetypes used in the TV show. Rewatching it after 18 years and I've been really enjoying it. The Island represents the Unconscious. lostpedia.fandom.com/wiki…

Jordan is playing a Jungian Archetype

This archetype is usually presented as kind and wise, using knowledge to guide (usually younger) people onto the right path. Almost seen as a guide. It's even more appreciated and sought after during trying and turbulent times, such as in recent years, Covid, political disagreements, and socioeconomic issues more-so present in the last few years.

One might say Jordan B. Peterson himself filled this very role in many people's lives, whether subconsciously realized or not, and this is one reason I feel he became so popular, so quickly.

Consequently though, when one is possessed by this "Old man archetype." There is a great psychic inflation, according to Jung. This is dangerous as it threatens to take overwhelming control of the individual. And I think we've seen that at times in some more narcissistic-types that follow him.

Academic Research on Jungian Archetypes

Hello all,

I'm currently in the midst of conceiving a topic for one of my academic papers; i'm largely fascinated by Carl Jung and his concept of the archetypes. Are there any studies associated with the archetypes documenting their relationship to individuals? I would be curious to understand the profiles of individuals who can be attributed to certain archetypes and attempt to extract some form of similarities for those who fall into each category.

Books that integrate Jungian archetypes?

In college I took a feminist/women & gender studies class that heavily used Jungian analysis, and two books used were Women Who Run With Wolves by Clarissa Pinkoka Estes and Goddesses in Everywoman by Jean Shinoda Bolen. These two books were great to read and focused mainly on archetypes, the authors both were Jungian analysts I believe. Are there any other books like this?

  • Just as the Masculine Quaternary started out from the Childhood Quaternary (The Divine Child, the Precocious Child, the Oedipal Child and the Hero), does the Feminine Quaternary (the Queen, the Amazon, the Medial and the Companion) have the same thing? And what would their shadow pairs be?
  • What are the Passive and Aggressive shadows of the Medial archetype called?
  • What are the Passive and Aggressive shadows of the Creator, the Sage, the Innocent, the Explorer, the Rebel, the Everyman and the Caregiver?

Jungian Archetypes: Is Dumbledore a Sage or a Magician?

Hello everyone, I'm trying to use Jungian Archetypes to analyze characters' personalities in fictions. Based on what I've read, there are 12 Jungian Archetypes (see table 4). My problem is: When I apply these archetypes, some characters are very difficult to be classified as one Archetype. For example, I don't know if Dumbledore is a Sage or a Magician. Could anyone tell me how to deal with this problem? Are there any detailed descriptions of Jungian Archetypes or related work I can read?

Thanks so much for your help!

Differentiating adaptability to stoic ideas based on Jungian archetypes

Stoicism provides rules to live by, do we know how well certain people are able to understand what stoicism provides based on their personality?

Specifically linking archetypal traits to stoic insights.

For an example, if someone is prone (unconsciously) to finding the good in people, will they gravitate towards stoic goals that reinforce that? Or do they see that others do not think the way that they do, then grow their understanding of that perspective.

If they do the former, would it be beneficial for them to see the latter?

Terence Mckenna's Perspective on UFOs - Omega Points, Singularities and Jungian Archetypes

The singularity hypothesis articulated by hunterseeker1 reminds me of the kinds of ideas put forward by Jacques Vallee, Carl Jung and Terence Mckenna. UFOs are a (post)modern, technologically obsessed manifestation of our collective unconscious that is paraphysically breaking through into our reality more regularly as we approach "the end of history", or the singularity, or the omega point, or other such similar terms. Here are some quotes I pulled from some of Terence Mckenna's views on UFOs:

One possible view of the flying saucer is that it is a kind of projection from the consciousness of the planet -- that it is Gaia, that it is in fact a kind of alchemical object, haunting human historical time with a symbol of totality, the kind of totality that our religions and our mystical yearnings are so at pains to concretize for us. But unless we as egocentric beings clarify our relationship to the unconscious, then I think the flying saucer is going to remain quintessentially mysterious. This was Jung's view.

… the UFO challenges the assumptions of science, and I think in that sense Jung was really onto something when he saw it as coming from the unconscious. It is like an object coming from the unconscious with a compensatory function -- to turn us away from the rational and toward the intuitive; to turn us away from the paternalistic, Apollonian, solar, masculine view of things, and toward a kind of watery, lunar, mysterious, intuitively felt feminine force -- almost as though the UFO is a manifestation of Gaia as mother goddess. Science, as the proudest -- pardon the word -- erection of the rational mind, then is challenged by something from an entirely other dimension, an entirely other realm, that concretizes for us the culture crisis. And that's why I've gotten into UFOs; I think they are important for a resolution of the culture crisis. They concretize the struggle between the paternalistic-masculine and the lunar-feminine, between a dominator society and the kind of partnership society that we require to survive.

*… whatever lies behind the UFO mystery, it is a force which can literally do anything. So it is fruitless to talk about the size of the objects or their composition or color, or the size of the entities, their dress and weapons and accoutrements, because it can appear literally any way it wants to. It can appear as the Virgin Mary; it can appear as galactarian overlords; it can appear as gnomes, elves, sprites, this sort of thing. It
