Jacobite Syrian Christian Church Puns

During Onam 2017, the Jacobite Syrian Church of Kerala organized an Onam feast to raise money for a new church in New Zealand. Thousands of Malayalis, including a large number of Hindus, paid $15 each to dine. The church collected a hefty sum in the name of a Hindu festival.

[By "Jacobite", I am referring to the Patriarch Faction of Malankara Church. I am well aware of the fact that the term 'Jacobite' is a misnomer.]

Why the Patriarch group of the Malankara Church is the most progressive and truthful Christian group in Kerala ---

1. Supports efforts to protect constitutional values: A large number of bishops/priests took part in the LDF's anti-CAA human chain.
2. Supports women's rights: Took part in Kerala Govt's Vanitha Mathil supporting equal rights for women.
3. Disapproves "St. Thomas Myth": One of its bishops openly busted the tradition that Thomas, the Apostle, came to Kerala and said that Christianity came to Kerala in the later centuries of the first-millennium thanks to the bishops who were sent by Antioch.
4. Supports 'Right to Burial': The only Christian group in Kerala that supports the right of a descendant to be buried in the same cemetery where any one of their past ancestors were buried.
5. Loved by all political parties: Protest meetings conducted by the group is attended by political leaders cut across party lines. No religious group in Kerala can boast this kind of political backing.
6. Supports 'Church Act': The only Christian group in Kerala that supports the progressive "Church Act" that will end "corruption and oppression" in churches. This is despite the fact that the Act will take away the power of bishops and bring in more government control.
7. Less institutionalized: It does not have an official constitution, has a far more open and disorganized system of management.
8. Support for liberal media: Burned copies of Manorama newspaper and publicly declared support for more reformist media like Mathrubhumi, Mangalam etc.
9. Adv. Jayashankar's support: Nobody can undermine the support of Kerala's brightest political critic. This group remains the only religious group that Jayashankar doesn't criticize.

As a subreddit dedicated to Orthodoxy what are your views on the Jacobite Orthodox church of India more exactly the St. Thomas Christians of Kerala? are you aware of such a fraternity? what are their links with the other sections of the Orthodoxy, say the Eastern or Russian.

I'm aware of the history of my community, the liturgy and traditions but not a much about the global picture and history. Enlighten me.

I am no longer a minister in a Christian church of about 300 people on the east coast as of YESTERDAY (1/24/22). Things have been really tough over the last several years for the church and me personally — Covid lockdowns, Mother-in-law suicide, marriage almost done, I’ve had anxiety breakdowns and this is on top of all the church drama. You experience people and circumstances at the best AND worst in the ministry.

I decided to step down from my role as the preacher at the end of November in 2021. In years past, the ministers have left on bad terms and it hurt the church, so I wanted to rise above that and be the person I preached about. So In reality, I wasn’t doing anything special, just trying to be a respectful and kind guy.

I gave the church like a 4 weeks notice with my resignation on 12/1 (only two weeks required though). I was also due a 4 week paid sabbatical (just a rest period), but I was willing to forgo that for a shorter period of “rest” at the beginning of the year and I would help the church out however I could. This is important for later.

It’s also important to know that times are tough to find good ministers right now. No one wants to deal with church drama anymore. There is a MASSIVE exodus of preachers and I’ve officially join the ranks.

The leaders asked me to help them formulate a “what’s next plan.” So, I tried to be as helpful as possible. Here is the plan I submitted on 12/6.

1. I would become the “interim preacher” on 1/1/22.

2. I would take a “rest” from 1/1/22-1/23/22 instead of a full sabbatical. (Note: vacation resets at the beginning of the year; I have four weeks. So, I could have been a jerk and kept quiet in Jan, took vacation in Feb., and then peaced out)

3. I would return to preach on 1/30, help lead the church, help find a backfill, help hand off my other duties—- I oversaw the website, social media, and pretty much ran everything (very important for later). I overworked myself which led to my wrecked marriage, burnout and resignation.

4. I had some vacation left in 2021, so I saved it for the last week in December. The church was closed anyways, so no big deal. I just really needed a break from preaching and church from 1/2-1/23.

Unfortunately, I got called back from vacation to preach on 1/2 because the other two ministers “got sick” and couldn’t preach. So, again, trying to be the good guy I sacrificed my vacation to prepare a sermon and preached on 1/2.
