A list of puns related to "Inattentional blindness"
I was reading a study recently that showed that people with ADHD are more likely to "pass" the Simons and Chabris IB Test where you count how many times a basketball is thrown.
You can do it here if you've never seen it before. It won't spoil it.
Basically, because we can't focus on a given task, we're more likely to spot things that others might miss.
Has anyone else read this study? Has it been debunked or confirmed?
This is a bit complicated for me. I understand what top-down cognitive processing is and I know what bottom up cognitive processing is. Our teacher asked as how, lets say, in the famous video with the ball passes and the gorilla passing through as the teams pass the ball, how did our bottom-down processing and our top-down processing basically made us miss the gorilla passing,
Thoughts?
PS: my textbook defines the phenomenon as Inattentional Blindness not selective attention btw

I have used this method dozens of times in the past and have never been caught or called out. I've done it multiple times at the same location, and never had it go wrong. I'm now working in a much more professional industry, and I have stopped doing anything illegal, because no matter how good you are, you can still always get caught.
Note: I absolutely take my appearance into account--at least partially--for my success. I'm a relatively attractive white guy with a pretty charming smile. So if you allow yourself to look like a shitty movie thief; one-shame on you, clean up from time to time, and two-maybe avoid this approach.
onto the approach in question.
You may or may not know about this selective attention experiment that was made in 1999, but learning about it can really help you understand how to outwit both regular employees and LP. inattentional blindness Wikipedia article.
Some things to note:
This is best done with one or two small items.
Items should be something a person might regularly carry (I.e. a book, earbuds, a backpack etc.)
This should go without saying for any illegal activity, but be casual. You'll do best in any situation if you are a solid actor.
Use basic distractions that directly involve you interacting with staff. (asking for the time because your phone has died, asking if they are hiring, genuine compliments, etc)
If you are caught, be really apologetic--and sell it.
So here's a basic breakdown of how the situation plays out:
Go to your local chain bookstore (Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, you get the point) and find a book you are interested in, but don't want to buy.
Sit down in view of employees and near an exit. Start flipping through the book.
Check your phone every couple of minutes, turn your phone off after checking it a few times.
flip through a little more.
get up and ask an employee what time it is. hold the book in plain sight.
when they respond, be surprised, as if you're late for something important.
leave the store with the book in hand, still in plain sight.
if you are called out, be embarrassed, but not scared. "oh my God I'm so sorry," sort of thing. give the book to the employee and bounce, because you're late.
explanation/TL;DR: This works for a few reasons--employees have a biased idea about thieves that they mostly get from media. They have this idea that th
