Hey friends in a few weeks I’ll be coming to Gothenburg from America for work for about about a month. I’ve been there before for about three weeks and felt like I covered the more touristy stuff and hit up the larger bars/clubs. Looking for things to do off the beaten path. Also wouldn’t mind making a couple friends there that I maybe able to hang out while in town. I’m a male in my late 30’s who is pretty laid back but likes to have a good time. Thanks in advance!

I applied to the Software Engineering and Management Bachelors Programme at the University of Gothenburg and just got the message that I am qualified and that my application will be continuing.

Now my question is: My merit rating has been calculated to 18,05. Do you guys think I could have a chance at getting into the course? How good of a score is that anyways?

So my biggest Achilles heel as a passionate music fan is that I find and latch on to certain bands that are “perfect” to me and listen to them over and over again to the exclusion of finding new music.

I’m very slow to discover new bands and check bands out that I haven’t heard before. I’ve listened to metal since the early 2000’s and you’d be surprised by the bands I’ve never listened to once, it’s definitely a problem I have.

With that said, Gothenburg melodeath is by far my favorite metal sub genre aside from prog and I’m really craving discovering bands that blend both together. With that said, I’d simply love more modern melodeath suggestions, they don’t necessarily HAVE to be prog but it’s a bonus for sure.

My current favorite bands that do this include:

Be’lakor

Insomnium (Winter’s Gate is incredible)

Persefone

Aside from them, my current favorite modern metal bands in general (to help round things out and give an idea of where my tastes are at) include:

Unleash the Archers (I LOVE the sprinkling of melodeath on Apex for example)

The Ocean

Ne Obliviscaris

Slugdge

Cult of Luna

Haken (Though I’ve never been a huge fan of their vocalist / vocals)

And non metal prog favorites:

Coheed and Cambria

Tool (never really considered them metal but I know some do)

Eidola

Thank you guys for any suggestions! I don’t listen to a ton of bands and you’d be surprised by the stuff I haven’t heard, so if there are any obvious recommendations here don’t assume I’ve checked them out before. My knowledge of modern bands is severely lacking, and most of what I listen to aside from the above is old school stuff like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Opeth, Suidakra, etc.
