I’ve been working on an interactive pun searching tool (read: given two input categories, searches among them for words that share a lot of sounds). I’ve added a feature that constrains the search just among top level domains so that people can find fun website names that benefit from the rhyme-as-reason effect.

Here’s a blog post explaining more about the whole project. Basically, it finds category synonyms using word2vec and then finds "puns" using phonetic nearest neighbor vectors. I’m interested in feedback on this and what fun domain names people are able to find, and I'm happy to answer any questions!

The UI has a long way to go! Some notes: you can select to search for words that match via alliteration, rhyme, or flexible phonetic match. And you can click on words in the blue columns to do a more specific sub-search, which can often be more helpful than just looking at the top overall results in the center column.

I've been trying to find a good solution for authoritative server multiplayer with Unity3D, but so far it seems like one doesn't exist. For any real production game that has multiplayer, you need to have an authoritative server model to properly handle cheaters and other things (it seems like Unity has realized this with their new Connected Games initiative, but that's still a ways out). You also need the ability to have server code that runs on the server to properly handle things like AI-controlled NPCS (which almost any game will have).

Here are the options I've considered:

PUN (https://www.photonengine.com/pun)

Not suitable for a real production game. Cons:

• Master client, not authoritative server.
• Doesn't allow you to write custom server code.

UNET (https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/UNet.html)

Not suitable for a real production game. Cons:

• Master client, not authoritative server.
• On the deprecation path.

GameSparks (https://www.gamesparks.com/product/)

Cons:

• Server code is written in javascript (gross).
• Documentation is not detailed and community is small.
• Unclear if you can even write server authoritative code for their real time game solution.
• No client-side prediction
• Seems like it's mostly used for its non-multiplayer features like leaderboards and economy. Haven't seen any examples of successful multiplayer games that use it.

Pros:

• Very reasonable pricing (free until you have 100,000 MAU).
• Seems like it has cloud hosting and load balancing.

Cons:

• No load balancing or matchmaking.
• Little documentation.

• Pricing is absurd, especially for a small studio. Only free up to 100 CCU, and from there you have to pay $100 per server that you run it on.

Cons:

• Haven't been able to find any documentation or examples of successful unity games that used this.
• Seems like you have to write your own intermediary servers to start games according to their documentation
• Only hosts the server, doesn't actually provide real-time game support such as synchronization or client side prediction. Have to write all those yourself

First of all, let me just be clear that I'm probably going to be judged for what you're about to read. While it's naturally okay for anyone reading this to share their thoughts, all I want to ask of you is to have some empathy and do not simply throw your stones at me.

As you've probably already noticed by the paragraph above alone, I'm a very insecure person. It only got worse as I came to Germany and started working at X-Company (hidden name, of course). I can't really tell when exactly it became worse, the way I see it today, it was a progressive and ever-increasing process which culminated in me almost getting (if I wasn't indeed, I'm getting to that in a second) depressive. The reason I say I'm not sure if I was really depressive or just suffering from any other problem is because I never got help from a professional, like a psychologist. This is the first point where you can blame me: I never really gathered the will to go to one and whenever I did, I realized that it would be quite hard to get one down here in the south. Maybe it's because it's a relatively rural area, reasonably far from great centers, like Munich or Stuttgart. Point being, during 2017 and 2018, I was completely broken. I felt like complete shit. Like everything I was and could be able to do, was worth less than nothing.

Before I go any further, let me make this small pause: I love my work (as in: the tasks I'm supposed to complete). I really like my daily tasks and I try my best to perform them within the best quality parameters I know. I find my work challenging, interesting, different. I get excited whenever something new and challenging shows up and I jump like a kid around the Christmas tree when I manage to solve one of these new challenges. This might be one of the reasons as for why did I push so hard to make it work throughout 2015 and 2016. At this point, I really thought that the performance complaints I was receiving were fair. I thought they were right to say that I could be much better, faster and reliable. And so I did. However, my bosses' (family company, if you know what I mean...) perception of me never really changed.

See, I've been working in the same small company (less than 20 employees) for about 4 years and by the end of my third year, I happened to be the oldest worker in the company, with the exception of the family managing it. The key feature is the ability to lock and unlock a shader which does two things:

UNLOCKED: Applies shader to all armor pieces that does not have a shader applied.

LOCKED: Applies shader to all armor pieces and overrides pieces that have individual shaders.

In D1 applying a shader was frivolous and fun. Going on a Crota raid then having a glowhoo party in the tower afterwards was a simple thing to do and others could join you. The D2 shader system offers more choice, but ironically has less freedom to it. It’s now more cumbersome to apply individual shaders to all armor and if you use the same exotic between sets of differently shadered gear then you have some garish monstrosity.

Combining the two systems would allow:

• More FUN! Throw on a new shader for a raid. Wear something blinding in the tower. Whatever you like.
• Destiny Fashionestas will be able to see how different shaders look together while looking at the full character model.
• Keep exotics matching your outfit.
• Did I mention FUN?!

Adding shaders to the collection is a great step with Forsaken, but hopefully we can see some more changes for applying shaders down the road.

- The girl he mentions to Yozora, "but wait, that girl...she told me about you." is the other cutscene heart from the Final World. Dialogue:
