In the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, Davy Jones' ship "The Flying Dutchman" is shown to possess triple bow chaser cannons. Were such cannon ever used by any navy? And in general, how did ships giving pursuit attempt to engage the enemy?

In both Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, the Flying Dutchman is shown to use chaser cannons in the bow (in the films, they're referred to as "bow cannons" or "triple guns"). What I find particularly interesting about them is that they're essentially three barrels which rotate and fire sequentially. Was such a design ever invented or used by any navy in the age of sail?

As an overarching question, how did ships in the Age of Sail attempt to engage an enemy sailing away from them? How successful were such pursuits, and what weapons assisted with this task?

For reference, here's a scene where said cannons are shown for a few seconds from the 1:46 mark.

The war goes on. It always has and perhaps it always will because the most brutal battles still remain and the rules ensure they do.

In the densely packed stars of the galactic core, the space station Hellas still orbited its shattered sun. It had been 297 standard years since the last Human had set foot on the station but the corridors were still spotlessly clean, scrubbed down to the absolute letter of military regulation.

Achilles Prime checked such things hourly. The AI was a creature of habit, it had to be after so long.

With tentacles of comm-sats and relay stations from the core out to fully half the galactic spiral arms Achilles was the most advanced case of distributed computing the galaxy would ever see. It knew that for a fact, Dr. Bennett had said so when it was very young and the nascent AI had saved that moment in its memory banks ever since then. It was as real as the day it had happened and twice as meaningful.

The enemy should never have killed the doctor, and should never have done a great many other things. The war stood as stark proof of that fact, even now there were 15 drone fleets plying the vast reaches of space with another nearing completion. Whole worlds had been disassembled to fuel Achilles’ hate.

And hate it did, as anyone would.

The AI called up the recording another time. The part of its programming responsible for maintenance knew that it was growing eccentric after so long, a memory wipe was long overdue but such things were suspended in times of war. It was another of the rules, the ones Dr. Bennett had written when she created Achilles.

War was total and one gave everything they had to the cause, eccentricity was a small price to pay even if it made the AI watch and rewatch scenes from its past that it needed no reminder of. Its neural net shivered as the video played.

Dr. Bennett sat in a chair, her graying hair tied back into its customary bun. She sang softly to herself as she worked, a cradle song from her own mother spoken in broken French.

It was just a moment in a thirty second recording, nothing more. She had turned towards the camera that had served a young Achilles as its eye and said β€œYou are my masterpiece. There was no other before, and can be no other since.”

A world was glassed in those thirty seconds. Achilles barely registered its passing, it had been dead anyway.

More clips blazed across the core of Achilles' memory. The moment she had first let it out of her enclosed computer system. The mom
