When my parents were having their bar and bar mitzvahs they got usually $36 while I got $54.
Recently, I was reflecting on my Jewish heritage and the rites therein...particular the bar/bat mitzvah. Back then, it seemed totally normal to stand in front of a congregation, read some Hebrew, give a sermon, recite some prayers, and have a massive party. Looking back more than 20 years ago, it all seems quite strange...everything from what the Torah portion actually meant to the absurdity of asking a 13-year-old kid to give a sermon to, yes, the big party.
I recently wrote about my reflection and experiences here:
https://parkerschaffel.com/2020/07/08/the-oddities-of-a-bar-mitzvah/
But I'm wondering: do any of you feel the same way? Do you look back and think the whole thing is a bit odd? We can certainly be proud of what we did while thinking it quite strange.
I welcome any thoughts.
Thanks very much.
Maybe Iβm not looking on the right channels of the internet but are there any adult bar/bat mitzvah classes? I know with COVID and all it would have to be online, which Iβm perfectly fine with. Thanks!
Note that Jews typically celebrate a bar or bat mitzvah either at age 12 or 13 for girls and 13 for boys, so these kids were born 12-13 years ago.

I am not Jewish and I don't want to offend anyone, I am just curious. I was talking to my mom about Christian baptism. Somehow the question came up. Thanks!
I am a 23 year old jewish (not religious male) I work in the office, as well as some of the events, and quietly laugh at my surroundings. Ask me anything.
Hi Reddit! I lost my job in the last recession so naturally I became a full-time professional DJ which has become my career and I absolutely love it. It's given me the freedom to work from home, choose my schedule so I can spend time with my family, and has given me great life so far.
I'm a full-time, working DJ. Not Pauly D or David Guetta. Most people really have no idea what the reality of being a full-time DJ is and I want to tell what it's really like. I've DJed hundreds of weddings of an array of cultures and ethnicities, corporate parties, birthdays and graduations, school dances, you name it. I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. There's also behind the scenes stuff that DJs go through that no one else seems to see - the driving and travel, dealing with stressed out brides to too conservative school dance organizers in the Bay Area to white collar employees raging at the company party. There are realllllly horrible 'professional' DJs out there that tend to give other legit professional DJs bad reps...like this guy.
Proof: My mobile DJ company is The DJ Circle . Here's my company on [Facebook](http://facebook.com/TheDJCircle . I've started blogging and this is my latest blog post, The 100 Rules for Being a Professional DJ.
I'll start at 1pm PT. Ask me anything.
EDIT(s): Thanks so much for posting and asking questions. I will return around 4pm PT for round 2!
EDIT 2: Taking a break for a couple hours. Be back approx 9:30 PT.
EDIT 3: Thanks for all the great questions! Keep them coming, I will check back in around 9AM PT
EDIT 4: Had fun this morning I will return Approx 4pm PT today July 12 Thanks for the questions and upvote!

> Before Paul Rudd broke into television and movies, the "Dinner for Schmucks" star was working the bar and bat mitzvah circuit in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley.
> He emceed my bat mitzvah party, back in 1992 - months before landing a recurring role on the NBC drama "Sisters."
> The soft-spoken aspiring actor whom my mom and I met on the hunt for bat mitzvah DJs - I took an immediate liking to Rudd - turned out to be the perfect choice for the event.
> Rudd, donning a yellow tuxedo jacket, a ruffled shirt, shorts and Doc Martens, ably and energetically led us through all of the bat mitzvah staples: candle-lighting, Coke & Pepsi, toasts, limbo, "Hands Up," challah-cutting and "YMCA." And as the "Today" show-themed bat mitzvah party came to a close, he invited my friends onto the dance floor to sing a moving rendition of "That's What Friends Are For.".
> The movie "Dinner for Schmucks" - in which Rudd stars alongside Steve Carrell - opened last weekend to a bevy of rave reviews.
> So I thought it would be a fitting time to share some footage of Rudd holding court at my bat mitzvah.

Anything our sages say about people who convert? They are technically bar/bat mitzvah after they finish converting, correct?
Iβm posting here because Iβve asked around and am getting conflicting info.
We live in a wealthy area. We are not βunwealthy,β but arenβt as well off as many of our friends. My child has been invited to a number fo Bar/Bat Mitzvahs from classmates (not close friends). We are not Jewish and need help with the following etiquette rules:
What is a fair/reasonable amount to gift? I ask because Iβm hearing minimum $54, standard $72. Will $36 mark my child/family as cheapskates? Again, these are not close friends. Are there different acceptable amounts depending on level of friendship?
If the invite says βcelebration to immediately follow services,β should my child attend services? Does it depend on how close of a friend to celebrant?
Are parents (I .e. Me and/or my husband) expected to attend services? Party? (We donβt know or socialize with these children or their families).
What is appropriate dress for kids, adults?
TIA for help with this and if Iβve missed anything, please let me know!
I'm really wondering and it's not Hava Nagila
