Were these shells even onboarded to ships? E.g. when the Iowas were reactivated in the 80s, did they need to carry armor piercing projectiles? Id imagine there was no enemy armor like that even afloat anymore. Did they just get provisioned with standard HE shells? There were other big gun cruisers that continued to serve the navy for years after ww2. Same for them? Id imagine all of these ships would just shoot HE for their shore bombardment role. I'd imagine HE shells would be plenty able to hurt contemporary enemy warships.
