Is there an easy-to-get solvent for zinc sulfide? edta can be used but I was looking for something more common, specifically for dissolving copper doped ZnS, maybe something like toluene would work? Thanks

Synthesis of a β€œMasked” Terminal Zinc Sulfide and its Reactivity with BrΓΈnsted and Lewis Acids

The β€œmaskedβ€œ terminal Zn sulfide, [K(2.2.2‐cryptand][ Me LZn(S)] ( 2 ) ( Me L = {(2,6‐ i Pr 2 C 6 H 3 )NC(CH 3 )} 2 CH), was isolated via reaction of [ Me LZnSCPh 3 ] ( 1 ) with 2.3 equiv of KC 8 in THF, in the presence of 2.2.2‐cryptand, at –78 Β°C. Complex 2 reacts readily with PhCCH and N 2 O to form [K(2.2.2‐cryptand)][ Me LZn(SH)(CCPh)] ( 4 ) and [K(2.2.2‐cryptand)][ Me LZn(SNNO)] ( 5 ), respectively, displaying both BrΓΈnsted and Lewis basicity. In addition, the electronic structure of 2 was examined computationally and compared with the previously reported Ni congener, [K(2.2.2‐cryptand)][ tBu LNi(S)] ( tBu L = {(2,6‐ i Pr 2 C 6 H 3 )NC( t Bu)} 2 CH).

How would you dope Zinc Sulfide?

Hello!

I've been doing a lot of research on electroluminescent displays, because I want to build my own. Most of them call for Zinc Sulfide (ZnS) doped with an activator (like copper) to create a phosphor which can emit light. I know what doping is, but how would someone actually dope ZnS?

Here are some Wikipedia articles that I used for research; none of them reference how to actually dope ZnS.

Zinc Sulfide: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_sulfide

Electroluminescense: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroluminescence

Thank you in advance!

Zinc Sulfide deposition on glass slide?

Hi r/chemistry! Physicist here. I need to create a fluorescing slide for an upcoming experiment. I have a guide from another lab that's... bad. It's basically a trial-and-error based process, so I thought I'd come to the experts to get some suggestions.

The basic plan right now is to mix DI water, sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, and zinc sulfide in some quantity, submerge glass slides in the mixture, and let the sodium silicate 'glue' the zinc sulfide to the surface as the precipitate settles and the water evaporates. Unfortunately I can't be more specific, because the instructions I was given were qualitative only.

Can anyone describe the chemical processes that might be involved here, and give me some quantitative guidance?

Thanks!

Question about synthesizing zinc sulfide nanoparticles doped with manganese.

Hi guys, I am a materials science engineering student with a chemistry background. Our group is trying to synthesize zinc sulfide nanoparticles to study its triboluminescent properties. The paper that we are using as a reference to synthesize the particles is http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs13204-012-0157-x/fulltext.html

The problem is that although this paper lists the amount of reactants, it is not very clear in general. I have a list of questions that I wanted to ask and was wondering if you guys could help me out!

  1. Our solution is not turning transparent after the addition of Na2S like it states in the paper, it is a white/pink precipitate. What might be the cause of that? I know that zinc sulfide white, so I'm thinking that that's what it is. But I'm not sure why the paper mentions that it will become transparent.

  2. When it says to purify by deionized water and acetone, am I correct to assume that he means centrifuging and washing with DI and acetone to remove any unnecessary products?

Thanks!!
