Cancer and Coronavirus: A verbatim theatre project

Hi Reddit,

I am a breast cancer survivor (5 years since diagnosis, yey!) I am studying theatre at university currently and would like to write a verbatim theatre peice about what's happening to you right now.

What is it like to be going through cancer treatment currently? Are you taking measures to quarantine yourself? Tell me what's changed for you, due to the Coronavirus pandemic?

If you reply to this post, I will likely be using your exact wording to create a play.

If you do not consent to having your words recorded and used for public performance, do not reply to this post.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

Edit: I'm not sure why this post is getting downvoted but I guess I should clarify a few if things:

  • It is unlikely I will make any money out of this. I'm interested in making the this play for the sake of recording people's experience in such a historically significant time.

  • I am 37f from Perth, Western Australia

  • I have no nefarious intentions. I went through chemo and radiation and was terrified about getting sick because my immune system was nonexistent. I just want to hear about what it's like to go through cancer treatment during such a stressful time.

  • You don't need to have had anything to do with Coronavirus. I'm just interested in what it's like to be going through cancer treatment with the ever present threat of Coronavirus.

I hope that clarifies a few things.

FAQ:

What is Screenwave?

  • Screenwave Media is a company owned by Ryan Schott, former Cinemassacre employee who managed their website early on.
  • They're a management/PR company offering their services to different Brands and Youtube channels. Nowadays Screenwave seems to have partnership deals with many smaller and medium-sized channels, especially retro gaming ones. Their responsibilities range from just selling merchandise and getting sponsorship deals to, in case of, for example, Cinemassare, managing public appearances and helping out with the content production. You can read more about what they offer on their website.
  • Most of the sets used on Cinemassacre shows are set up at Screenwave HQ.
  • Pretty much all new faces on Cinemassacre, such as Justin or Tony, are employees of Screenwave Media, as far as we know.
  • Ryan Schott also co-owns the Too Many Games expo.
  • Screenwave's main source of income seems to be managing youtube channels, which they usually do in exchange for 20% of the profits.
  • The company often offers youtubers 'channel optimization for the algorithm'. What this means is they'll try to run the channel in such a way that its videos appears more often in the 'recommended' sidebar as well as higher in search results.
  • One of their most noticeable methods for doing so is changing the video thumbnails so that they include the crator's face with an exaggerated expression, usually with added glow or outline around it. This is why throughout 2019 all of the old AVGN thumbnails were replaced with ones that follow this formula. Additionally, episode numbers were removed and the ending overlay with 'other videos' and channel link was added to all of the episodes, obstructing the final scenes, as the videos weren't created with it in mind. Descriptions and tags were also altered.

What's up with AVGN?

Dandelion: Chapter 10

Syrlla’s Song, the Southern Seas
Eastern shore
Tarrskyn Eiddersbor

"How did you manage to lose them? You’ve chased them all across the sea, and lost them the moment they get to land? Unacceptable!” Shulft was not happy. Not happy at all. And the idiot was going to get himself gutted if he didn’t get smarter very soon indeed.

β€œIt’s quite simple,” Tarrskyn explained patiently, for the third time. β€œTheir ship is smaller than we are. She rides lighter in the water. She can turn quicker and hides in the fog better than we do. And the young lord she belongs to is a damn canny sailor. I can see why your master wants him so much; he’ll fetch a handsome ransom.”

Shulft spat over the side and glared at the coastline as though it had made an uncouth comment about his mother’s virtue. β€œThey must have gone inland.”

β€œOf course they went inland,” Tarrskyn agreed, wrestling with his insulted pride. Who did this lead-footed clod think he was talking to? He’d paid for the best captain and crew he could find, and now he was treating them all like fools.

But satisfying his frustrations and giving Shulft the thrashing he deserved before marooning him would be bad for business.

β€œSo? Head inland!”

β€œCertainly, your bjerkarness,” Tarrskyn smarmed. β€œAnd which of the…oh…five inlets I’ve seen so far should we explore? Assuming they didn’t sail further north or south up the shore. We last saw them two days ago, I remind you.”

Shulft glared at him, then returned his wrath toward the land. β€œI thought I paid for the best.”

β€œYou did. We haven’t lost them yet,” Tarrskyn promised. He returned to the back of the ship and dug through the items he had stashed there. β€œWatch and learn.”

He found what he was looking for, and turned around, holding it. Shulft frowned at the cage in his arms. β€œThat’s an aurnak.”

β€œBeautiful, isn’t she?” Tarrskyn agreed.

β€œI think she might be the ugliest aurnak I’ve ever laid eyes on.”

Tarrskyn snorted, slipped on a thick leather glove, opened the cage, and transferred the hooded, taloned animal to his hand. It hung upside-down from his wrist, cocking its head this way and that as it waited.

β€œFlying those is a noble’s sport. What’s a lowlife like you doing with one?”

β€œSkathi here was always too ragged-looking to be a lord’s plaything,” Tarrskyn replied, stroking the bird’s head affectionately. Shulft wasn’t wrong; Skathi was too…feral to have ever been a noble’s bird. But that just added to her charms as far as he was concerne

[TOMT][Location] A very popular science center field trip destination for kids in central Florida in the mid-2000s? Had a β€œsmell” room where’d you’d stick your nose into a port and smell artificial smells?

Hey all, a bit of a different topic this time around, but hopefully any fellow Floridian twenty somethings can help me out with this one, I believe I went here multiple times in middle school around 2005-2006.

  • The field trip destination was a science center located in central Florida, and was large and popular enough that it would cater to multiple schools from all around the state on a single day. I vividly remember making a friend from another school, but being crushed when I found out he was from Miami and I was from Jacksonville and we were five hours apart.

  • The center featured a bunch of different science themed exhibits and shows for kids. One of the ones I remember fondly was a β€œsmell room” which featured a display on how the nose worked, and several ports you could stick your nose into and smell artificial smells. I remember some of these being intentionally rancid/pungent. (I want to say there was one that was verbatim fart themed)

  • There was a large animatronic of a character modeled after an kitchen sink that had snot dripping out of its nose, this animatronic would give listeners facts about the evolutionary purposes of things like snot and boogers I believe.

  • There was a space themed exhibit I unfortunately don’t recall much about.

  • There we’re several live shows peppered throughout the center, one of which featured an actor doing tricks with balloons filled with different gases, at one point he takes a giant torch to a giant ballon which causes a contained fiery explosion. (I remember this because it always scared the shit out of me)

  • There was a waiting area to the theatre the aforementioned show was held in that featured a very large scale that displayed weight via illuminated recycled milk cartons.

β€”β€”

Thanks in advance! I’ve been trying to remember the name of this place for years.

I just watched The Humans…

Y’all I watched this movie by myself in a near empty theatre at night. I really cannot handle horror films and the fact that this movie got progressively darker paired with the amount of bloody jump scares there were nearly took me out.

Despite that, this movie was wonderfully shot. The sound design and cinematography was amazing and I especially teared up when they were reading the grandmother’s email (if anyone happens to have a copy of what was said verbatim I’d be very grateful).

Loved the ending shot. Loved this movie. A24 never disappoints.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

β€œField Marshal Sir Douglas Haig: World War I’s Worst General”

At first I wasn’t sure whether to deconstruct an article from 14 years ago, regardless of how rubbish or deserving of scorn it was (and believe me, it is full of the mythology that surrounds Haig and the First World War in general) . However, considering that…

  1. The mythology of the First World War remains so ubiquitous in public discourse (at least in Britain and the Commonwealth)
  2. This particular article has the underserved privilege of being amongst the top 20 Google results when one searches for β€œDouglas Haig”
  3. The fact that it is still referenced in 2021 by sites purporting to be β€œβ€¦created by educators and experts on topics related to education”

…I thought it worth a shot. Dealing with the mythology of the Great War is also fun, and this article contains many hoary old myths in one concise document.

July 1916 and Haig’s Culpability:

Geoffrey Norman (a contributor to such distinguished publications as the Wall Street Journal, Esquire and the American Spectator) begins his piece with the seemingly innocuous observation that β€œVisiting the Somme battlefield in northern France is largely a matter of going from one Commonwealth Graves Commission cemetery to another”, and how the experience is liable to β€œstun”, or leave one β€œoverwhelmed”. Fair enough, although bearing in mind that the article is a comprehensive hatchet job on Douglas Haig, Norman’s intent here (as the article goes on to make clear) is that the BEF’S Commander in Chief β€œkilled those men”.

>"The magnitude of the battle still stuns the imagination. The Somme was an epic of both slaughter and futility; a profligate waste of men and materiel such as the world had never seen...he discussed with subordinates methods for continuing the offensive.
>
>Which he did, with a kind of transcendent stubbornness, for another four months, until winter weather forced an end to the campaign, if not the fighting. By then, Haig’s army had suffered more than 400,000 casualties. For the British, in the grave judgment of noted military historian John Keegan, 'the battle was the greatest tragedy…of their national military history' and 'marked the end of an age of vital optimism in British life that has never been recovered.' But Haig was not finished yet..."

This is something of a trope i
