Toddy Palm Puns

I saw an amazing recipe for palm wine(toddy) chicken on youtube.

However, I don't have access to palm wine. I was wondering if there was a substitute for it.

Has anyone found palmyra fruit (aka toddy palm or ice apple, known as "tal" in India) in any Asian grocery stores in the US? I've been to many stores in major East Coast cities but failed to find any. ##South of the Sea

 

The southernmost territory of China is the island of Hainan, one of the country’s smallest and poorest regions. Hainan has long struggled with water availability due to its unique plantation economy and lack of major independent river systems that feed into the tropical and temperate coastal mainland of China. This means that certain large dam projects must be accelerated within this province, outside of the scope of waterways management initiatives. Additionally, the region’s overall strengths must be enhanced by means of unique policy decisions that are only viable due to its island status. Finally, Hainan’s potential for modest industry and technological development will be explored.

 

 

###Tamed Frontier

 

The government’s relationship with Hainan has always been distant, and bred a distinct regional culture of independent action. This must be repurposed to the benefit of both the local people and China proper. As such, Hainan will be elevated to the status of Province, and will be designated as the primary cultural interaction point between China and the outside world. The island will have special border regulation to permit uncapped tourism, with minor barriers introduced between Hainan and the mainland in order to prevent “tourists” from illegally leaving the province. This is not, however, expected to be a serious concern.

 

Hainan’s special status will be enhanced by a restrictive development policy, with wide swathes of the interior designated as national wildernesses. Small coastal enclaves and significant segments of the remaining hinterland have further been categorized as recreational lands under provincial jurisdiction. The island’s wild character will remain, through power of policy. Alongside this effort, a recurring annual fund of $13.5 million will be put towards enrichment of the natural attractions of the island, for tourist purposes.

Independent dam initiatives will provide the basis for all of Hainan’s future growth, and planned future dam and reservoir areas are the primary cutouts from national wildernesses in the deep interior. The Songtao Dam, impeding the Nandu River, is on schedule for commission later this year. The resulting reservoir will be the second largest in all of China, and the dam will provide a substantial irrigation, fishing and tourism area just north of the primary wilderness zone. However

Many may not be aware of this, but India is not the only country which suffers from the disease of caste. Several other Asian nations too have caste systems. Some countries, like Pakistan and Bangladesh, were part of India till the 20th century, therefore it is natural for caste to rear its ugly head there. However, there are other nations which have never been part of India, but still have their own caste systems/castes as a result of Indic influence, such as Thailand and Indonesia.

We will take a look into some nations other than India which have caste systems, to get a clearer idea of how caste is present in these societies.

1) Pakistan

Islam is the main religion in Pakistan, with nearly 97% of Pakistanis adhering to it. Islam as a religion does not espouse any sort of caste system, yet Pakistan is not free of caste differences. Even within Muslim society, caste has found a way to embed itself.

Some of the upper castes in Pakistan include Rajputs, Syeds, Dhillon, Butt, Bhattis, Jutt, Janjua, Siddique, Mughal, Qureshi and Sheikh. Higher castes in Sindh include Shahs, Syeds, Akhunds, Effendis, Soomros, Talpurs, and Pirs.

'Lower castes' are referred to as Neech Jaat (low caste) and Badnasal (of bad lineage). In Balochistan the “lower castes” include Ghulams (slaves), Lohris (musicians), and Lachhis. Others like Hajjams (barbers), Dhobis (washers), Kumbhars (potters), Maachis/ Mallahs (fisherfolk) and Bhajeer (Dalit converts to Islam) are also considered “low caste”.

The social strata in Pakistan is called 'Biradari' (Urdu for 'brotherhood'). According to author Peter Anatol Lieven, the most important force in (Pakistani) society are Biradari, usually far stronger than any competing religious, ethnic, or ideological cause. Parties and political alliances in Pakistan are based on Biradari, not ideology. (Lieven, Anatol, Pakistan: A Hard Country). There are an estimated 40 castes in Pakistan.

The highest caste amongst Pakistani (and South Asian Muslims as a whole) are the Ashrafs, who claim foreign heritage. Within Ashrafs there are four divisions, viz Syed, Sheikh, Mughal and Pathan, from highest to lowest. This hierarchy is determined by the degree of nearness to Muhammad and which country they originate from; accordingly the Syeds (who trace descent from Fatima, Muhammad's daughter) have the highest status. Non-Ashraf Muslims are known as Aljafs, while lower caste Hindu converts are also often called Arzal (meaning 'degraded'.)
