Many questions surround Tiwanaku. Was it the oldest city on earth? How did it disappear? Where did its people go? One thing is certain though, as the longest-lived civilisation of the American continents, it has left us ruins to fire the imagination

I'm constantly fascinated by Megalithic structures from around the world. Especially, when one considers the type of technology and engineering, as well as the astronomical knowledge that goes into constructing these amazing places. It's easy to take for granted these amazing feats, when we have so much computing power and knowledge at our fingertips, but how did these ancient cultures and civilizations create such wonders? What technology was used to build these megaliths? What messages were these civilizations trying to convey? How have these structures stood the test of time? And why can't we replicate these megalithic structures today with our own technologically advanced civilization?
World Of Wonder presents Tiwanaku (aka Tiahuanaco), an ancient archaeological site in Bolivia.
The ruins of Tiwanaku lay near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca at an altitude of 3,850 meters (approximately 12,631 feet). According to Andean mythology, the creator emerged from the lake to create the Earth and the first people.
Tiwanaku is known for being a mystical and spiritually oriented place that flourished between 400 CE - 1000 CE and may even date as far back as 1500 BCE. At the city's height, Tiwanaku's advanced irrigation and agricultural network may have supported up to 60,000 people. However, between 1000 CE and 1100 CE, Tiwanaku fell into decline and was eventually abandoned. It is not known exactly why the place was deserted, but climate change and a devastating drought may have been the cause.
As for the humanoid statues found around the site, it is thought that they may represent a race of giants which first populated the world according to Andean mythology.
Tiwanaku was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in the year 2000.
