I would love to get into preparing my own tinctures at home. I use tinctures frequently but have never prepared my own. I don’t mind being around or working with alcohol, but purchasing and keeping around drinking alcohol at my own place just doesn’t sit well with me as someone in long term recovery. Yet I feel like I’m missing out by not diving into the practice of preparing tinctures. Obviously these kinds of feelings are personal.
How do any of you in recovery involve yourself in the process of preparing your own tinctures that sit comfortably with you as someone in recovery? I feel like other liquid extracts are usually lacking in the potency and power compared to tinctures and maybe people here can offer alternative methods as well to preparing liquid extracts that are just as effective as tinctures.
Let me preface this by saying I've never tried tasting it and I've never made it so this is my first experience. This weekend I'm going skiing and didn't feel like cleaning the vape to bring to the mountain so I thought tincture was an easy way to get high with just a few drops under the tongue. Last night I attempted to make it and when I tried it I damn near burned a hole under my tongue. It probably was the most vile taste I've experienced in a while and with my tongue I can physically feel the skin burn where I left the drop in my mouth. I understand there is a water-cure method to improve the taste and I did not do that, so there is my first issue but I'm not making this post as much for the taste as I am that I was completely not prepared to feel pain just from tincture. Therefore, clearly TIFU somewhere and looking for guidance.
My process is as follows:
- Have ABV.
- Buy Everclear.
- I filled Mason jar about 3/4 with ABV.
- I filled the jar with Everclear until it covered the product by a little.
- I used a pot filled with water on a flat-top griddle set to max.
- I put the Mason jar (lid off) in the pot of water.
- The pot of water never got to a boil, but the Mason jar did.
- I gave the tincture the occasional stir but it had a great boil for about 4 hours.
- I marked the jar with a sharpie and observed I burned off about an inch's worth of alcohol.
- Removed the jar, put some in a dropper bottle upon cooldown, put it under my tongue, wished for death.
- No profit and I'm surely not rinsing and repeating.
I am interested in seeing how strong it is per drop so I think I could get through it if I applied to coffee or soda but I thought the point was to take it sublingually. Where did this n00b go wrong? Thanks for your help.
Hi, I’m such a newbie to herbalism but started a lavender/ tulsi basil tincture! Will it taste like alcohol? Do you just drop it on your tongue? Put it in drinks or food? Just looking for advice on how to take it enjoyably. Thanks!
I'm on almost 4 entire tinctures of the b*noid tincture and yeah, this shit is psychedelic as fuck. Visuals are undeniably present both closed eye and open. Very mentally stimulated almost like shrooms. Ultimate powerful sativa strain? Seems almost so. The O really does meet the hype and not always immediately. Give this one some time and a few trys and up dosage people, it took me time but yes, THC O really IS psychedelic. Fyi vaporwave/mallsoft isn't a half had soundtrack for this stuff haha.

I created a small cheat sheet in excel that I like to share today, which is very helpful in creating a very precise tincture.
On my side, I always like to make a standardised extract so I can calculate the dose accurately. For that, I always consult a materia medica (and that’s what I advise everyone to do) where ratio and dosage is precisely reported, proven by the long clinical experience of the authors.
If you use a herb as a medicine this method will be proven extremely efficient over time; you will be able to adjust every dose accordingly, avoiding overuse effects and increasing dosage where needed.
My best sources for that are the following books: “Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth” by Sharol Tilgner, “The Medical Herbal Dispensatory” by Thomas Easley and “Advanced Herbal Pharmacy” by Scripta Rustica. Especially the last one gave me new hints of how to create a percolation more effectively (but that will be discussed on another post)

This Maceration Cheat Sheet can easily calculate the total amount of menstruum that you must use, based on the ratio between your herb and alcohol (weight/volume or anything else you may need). It can also help you dilute your alcohol, if as an example your preparation asks for a 35% proof alcohol and you have on hand a bottle of Everclear which is approx. 94%. Also, according to the herb’s dosage, it can guide you on how many drops/dropperful you must take at a time (for 1 oz. bottle) or how many teaspoons.
Input data that you must add are the herb’s weight, corresponding ratio, the alcohol that’s required for the extraction and the alcohol that you have on hand.
Take a look at the picture’s example. I have some dried corn silk that I want to extract, in 25% alcohol. The herb weighs 80 gr. and all I have got on hand is a bottle of Everclear, of 95%. Every value is inputted on the left arrow. Your final calculations will show up on the horizontal line, above. Also, as you may notice from the info that I have added as an example, the herb’s dosage is about 3-5 ml. Pretty much the title. Not a smoker; avid sublingual doser. Curious if anyone else is here.
I have severe cases of social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder and I use CBD tinctures. The tincture I currently use takes the edge off pretty well. I take 10-20mg around every 6 hours or so, which is one full dropper (I occasionally take double doses when my anxiety is worse than usual). The problem is with the doses I need, because I go through a 30ml bottle relatively quickly and dropping $50 every 2 weeks or so is not ideal for me right now.
Suggestions are appreciated.
Trying to find a natural remedy for my TMJ problems. What brands are best? (because I know there are some crappy ones out there) And have you had success treating your TMJ pain or joint pain with CBD? I'm also open to homeopathic suggestions.

If I hold a thc tincture under my tongue and then swallow it, does it get processed by my body the same way that eating an edible would? I know a tincture under the tongue can hit faster, but in terms of the metabolism and effects of the thc (compared to smoking) are the mechanisms basically the same?
I had some vegetable glycerin in the cabinet I purchased awhile back so made some tincture with it. After watching a few videos to make simple syrup they added the weed in the pot after the VG was already in it. Can it be infused then added to simple syrup?! Also what is there to make with it I got about 7oz of tincture 🤷🤷

I’m a heavy smoker, haven’t used edibles or a tincture in probably 6 months or more. Thursday night, I made the classic mistake of taking WAY more than I needed. Probably ended up being around 275mg taken over 5 hours. I’d take a little, wait 2 hours and feel nothing, take a little more, feel nothing, take a little more. My last dose was probably around 9pm. Then I ate some mozzarella sticks and it hit me like a fucking freight train. Long story short, I had the most terrifying trip/panic attack. I felt like I was dying which was scary enough, but I guess I knew in the back of my head that this was just a bad trip and the feeling would eventually go away. The worst of it was that I wasn’t necessarily hearing voices, but I was having truly disturbing thoughts that seemed to be my own which freaked me out even more. (It’s probably worth noting that even sober, I have an irrational fear of developing some underlying mental illness that would make me lose touch with reality and unable to care for myself or my family so this did NOT help.) I thought I had triggered a psychotic episode and would never be the same again. I truly wanted to die just to make it stop and I thought about killing myself honestly but I knew I couldn’t do that. I begged my husband to call 911 or to take me to a mental hospital. He knew I was just tripping balls and saved me the embarrassment, thankfully. The only thing that saved me was that the terror came in waves so I was able to talk myself down during those times. I finally fell asleep around 2am.
I could go into more detail about the high itself but that’s not the reason I’m posting. I woke up the next morning feeling groggy but just glad it was all over. Or so I thought. I got up, made breakfast and some coffee. A few minutes after I finished eating, I was in another full blown panic attack. I ended up laying in bed all day, holding a cold rag on my face because that seemed to keep me grounded in reality. I couldn’t sleep, I was just breathing through these horrible waves of panic all day. I slept fine last night and woke up again this morning ready to feel better and again, I felt so groggy. I cautiously sipped on some coffee and surprisingly it lifted me out of the fogginess which helped my anxiety a ton. I had a really good few hours but the anxiety set in again and I’ve had 2 more panic attacks in the last 4 hours or so.
