What are some Oscar-winning/nominated performances for movies that, to use a beloved Blank Check phrase, donβt exist?
I watched Good Night, and Good Luck last night and was reminded just how much I love this type of movie. Syriana by far stands out as the best I have ever watched, though it took a few rewatches to appreciate it fully. Michael Clayton is beautifully understated and, like Syriana, set to an a fantastic score. The other thing about these movies is that they avoid that classic Hollywood pitfall of overdramatising the plot because political or "talk-movies" are considered too boring. The Informant! springs to mind as another enjoyable but more humorous take on the same genre.
The few suggestions I have gathered (but not watched) so far are:
I am watching Syriana, the movie. A part supposedly takes place in Beirut. I lived most of my life in Beirut so was looking forward to that. As soon as this part began, I felt something off. All secondary actors look Moroccan (dark skin, moustache, round face). I could not recognize any location. I did not hear one word of Lebanese. The "hezbollah-controlled southern suburb" had old, traditional streets with arcades and no hanging cables at all and everywhere men walking around with machine guns. If this is Beirut then I am a flying elephant. To be fair, they got a few things right. There was a power cut in one scene, and they had Lebanese licence plates on cars. So anyway, I was right, that part was shot in Casablanca, morocco (just like I guessed straight away). They never came to Beirut.
Really liking these kinds of movies that show a realistic depiction of corporate life while forcing the characters through classic ethical dilemmas. I think Margin Call, Michael Clayton and Syriana all do this very well while discussing the important political/ economic issues of our times. Pretty well directed as well in my opinion.
Any more recommendations out there?
