Tea tree oil applied topically: Tea tree oil has frequently been mentioned as a cure for scabies [8], with multiple angles of benefit: first, it can kill the mites. Second, it may help with secondary complications such as with the proliferation of Staphylococcus Aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes [11][21]. Additionally, in one study, it was shown that tea tree oil had not exhibited any cytotoxicity to fibroblast cells [21]. In another study, it was shown that tea tree oil, even at very low concentrations, can inhibit the growth of various types of cancer [23][24][25].
But it isn’t without its limitations. Tea tree’s antibacterial properties may also kill good bacteria such as lactobacillus. By re-introducing good flora to the skin after tea tree oil is washed off, this negative impact may be countered. See Part 2 for details. An additional limitation of tea tree oil is in the potential (albeit low) for skin irritation in some individuals. (Definitely do a spot test before adding this to your regimen). The final limitation to tea tree oil is due to poor absorbency in the skin.
The main issue with tea tree oil is that there is very limited penetration into the epidermis layer of skin in its pure form, and it’s also very quick to evaporate [9]. To know how effectively the tea tree oil should penetrate the skin to provide a cure, it’s important to understand how deep scabies burrow. I’ve read that scabies burrow no deeper than beyond the stratum granulosum layer of the skin, which is part of the epidermis (diagram of skin here) [14, 18]. There are many sources that indicate that the mites primarily burrow in the stratum corneum (several layers above the stratum granulosum), but many which state stratum granulosum, and, if we want to find the most effective solution, it’s best not to assume the best. Therefore, a perfect cure would need to at least be absorbed into the stratum granulosum layer of the skin and remain within that part of the skin (or at least reasonably reapplied to this part of the skin) until all remaining mite eggs have hatched. [Edit] From my understanding, however, once the stratum corneum layer is penetrated, the drug can freely pass through to the dermis. Darn you, stratum corneum!
