On this day, the Forty Conspirators, a Portuguese nationalistic group, succeeded in their revolution to overthrow the Spanish in Lisbon and acclaimed Duke João de Bragança as King João IV, thus beginning the Restoration War (1640), a 28 year war where Portugal fought for its independence from Spain.

In 1968, Charles De Gaulle famously fled France as he feared the country was on verge of revolution. How close did the protestors actually came to winning? Did they intend to set up communist state like Russia in 1917 or Spanish anarchist collectives in 1936?

Blog post: Why Was the Spanish Revolution (1936-37) Unable to Overcome the State?
Hi! I'm still quite new to these longer-form blog posts, after my recent post on Francoist Spain.
Here's the post:
https://dan-margetts.medium.com/why-was-the-spanish-revolution-unable-to-overcome-the-state-1609ca97a570
It discusses the Spanish Revolution (1936-37), and particularly focuses on the suppression anarchists faced in their efforts to overcome the state during this intense period of social and political turmoil.
The suppressive forces dicussed are: counterrevolutionary inhibition by Stalinist communists, the process of state reconstruction and (paradoxically!?) anarchist involvement in it, and also the exterminating fascist force of the civil war, which was waging a conquest of βannihilation.' (For this last point, the case study of the repression of Seville under deranged General Queipo de Llano is considered.)
I hope you find it interesting if you decide to give it a read/skim through.
If you have any feedback, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!
Dan

Did the French Revolution and the subsequent wars of independence throughout Spanish America in the 1810s and 1820s ever inspire any notable anti-monarchist revolutionary movement in Spain itself shortly thereafter? If yes, why didn't it succeed?

What if Leopold did become King of Spain after the 1868 Spanish Revolution?
What if in this timeline heβs steadfast in his acceptance with the full support of Germany, and a German dynasty is again head of Spain during and after the Franco Prussian War
Germany makes sure to send aid and funds to support them, and maintains this German monarchy up until WWI, giving them arms and stuff and remaining their ally. What does this change?
