LPT: Green potatoes contain a neurotoxin called solanine. Throw them away!

Posting because what I thought was common knowledge isn't as well known as I thought. My roommate recently ate several green baked potatoes and got really bad headaches and nausea for several days. They only knew it was the potatoes because I noticed one on the counter and mentioned it needed to be thrown away, to which they responded with a puzzled expression. Explained that they make you sick (and can potentially kill you) only to find they had already eaten 2 whole mostly green potatoes.

Also, green potatoes aren't "underripe". Once they are green, they won't be edible again, you have to throw it out, or at least cut off the green part if it's very small. Posting to hopefully save someone from similar suffering, as apparently many people doing know this.

Solanine, a toxin in potatoes, is lethal to aliens. A skinny french fry will make them very sick, let alone an entire potato's-worth. While caffeine and capsaicin were brought up in early meetings, no one mentioned to the aliens that many humans regularly eat solanine in the form of potatoes.

Feel free to bring up or focus on other chemicals (like the neurotoxin in chocolate or menthol from mint plants) that are often overlooked in favor of caffeine and capsaicin, those two being the ones I feel I've been seeing the most of in this sub.

Solanine poisoning (?)

I was eating chicken soup with potatoes in it and then suddenly I ate a potato that tasted absolutely rancid. My family and I all drank the soup which tasted fine but it seems like it was only me who ate the bad potato.. it was sour, bitter, and kind of felt like it burned my throat and mouth a bit. I spit it out but I may have swallowed a little bit. I searched up why it could taste so awful and read about green potatos, rotten potatos, their taste, how you should avoid them because of possible solanine poisoning. I'm emetophobic and really worried I'm going to be sick from this. Does anyone know how dangerous this can be or how much of it it will cause symptoms?

Edit: so it's the next morning and I'm alive haha. I had a mild stomachache yesterday(though it may have been from nervousness) but I'm completely fine today

24F, feeling very sick after accidentally inhaling a lot of fumes from rotten potatoes. Could I have solanine poisoning?

24F, 5’6, 111 pounds, Caucasian, never smoked, almost never drink, no recreational drugs, located in Charleston, SC. History of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome type III along with a number of comorbidities, including cardiovascular and gastrointestinal issues. More details on medical history at end of post.

There has been a smell coming from my pantry for the last several days that I haven’t been able to identify. Today, I opened the door and just got hit with this wall of fumes, and I decided enough was enough. I spent about half an hour tearing it apart and smelling every single thing in it. By the time I identified the potatoes and threw them out, I was feeling pretty terrible. My head kills, I’m super nauseous, and I’m having chest pains.

I looked it up online and read that rotten potato fumes can be extremely toxic, but it’s hard to tell if I’m feeling awful because of toxins or because the smell and activity triggered flares of my pre-existing conditions (see below). It’s not uncommon for me to experience chest pains just from walking around the kitchen for a while, and I have a headache and nausea for the better part of most days as it is. It feels worse than normal, but not so much worse that it couldn’t be a heightened version of the regular stuff.

That being said, I have been experiencing some other unexplained symptoms over the last few weeks that I wonder might have been caused by inhaling the fumes before they were as noticeable. I’ve been experiencing random spikes in temperature (99.6-100) that last for about 12-18 hours, go away, and then pop back up again a few days later. I’ve also lost weight (from 122 to 111 in less than a month) with no changes in diet, and I’ve had pretty bad diarrhea and abdominal pain too (mostly upper right, but it kinda moves around). I’ve also had really bad dry eyes and dry mouth. (My rheumatologist has suspected Sjogren’s for a while and ordered a lip biopsy recently, so that’s happening soon.) I also have had a sore throat (kinda burns, probably related to dry mouth) and swollen glands.

I have an unrelated diagnostic laparoscopy scheduled for next month, and they’re going to test me for covid before that. I don’t think I have covid, and neither does my doctor. Mostly because the fever has been so off-and-on, and I’ve had no cough at all. But I’ll be tested in the next few weeks regardless.

I just don’t know how to tell whether the worsened symptoms I’m experiencing should be worrying me or not. I sent a message to

Severe reaction to new potatoes - nightshades and solanine?

Hi,

I've had eczema pretty much my whole life (I'm 22) and this summer have been trying a 16/8 fasting diet eating simpler food so I always know what's going in. My eczema is already actively flaring but there had been some small improvement over just 2 weeks. Then I ate some boiled new potatoes as part of my late lunch and had a very aggressive flare which included a worsening of pretty much every existing rash on my body to the point of pain and some weeping, a migraine, and feeling feverish and dehydrated the next day. Honestly I just felt crap overall, like I was actually ill. The rash started within 10mins and the migraine about 2hrs later. The illness started some time during the night, interfering badly with my sleep, and ended by the next afternoon. I don't eat potatoes very often and honestly I'm not sure I'd ever eaten new potatoes before then.

I've been doing some reading and have come across the nightshades family, but honestly there's a lot of information - some of it conflicting - and a lot of different lists of foods and theories and I just can't make sense of it all. What I have found is that new potatoes might be high in something called solanine in particular, which can cause the symptoms I had as well as joint pain.

Does anyone know anything about this type of allergy? Maybe can link to some clear and direct sources of information in relation to eczema? FYI:

- I eat other nightshades, although I have noticed that I can't have too much tomato, especially raw and those that are more acidic, like cherry tomatoes. I eat potato on occasion and always with the skins, but usually they're Charlotte or Salad potatoes. Those varieties just seem to sit better with me...which might be important info now that I think about it. The skins on those are beige and thin, and they're yellow inside. The new potatoes were white inside with dark, thick skin. I eat aubergine very occasionally, but my diet has a lot of bell peppers. I'll be cutting those out along with tomato and potato as a starting point.

- I react to relatively large amounts of acidic foods in general, most notably citrus fruits. However, even artificial lemonade can set me off, so I don't really know what's going on there.

Additional, but non-essential info:

-I do actually have some bad joints (which could be related to solanine in some people). My shoulders move around in their sockets a lot and very occasionally ache/burn, and I have one hip which stiffens up and bec
