After three days the jury was asked if they had enough evidence to satisfy their conscience (not any standard of evidence). If they said yes, the trial was over; if they said no, the trial would continue until they felt they were in a position to reach their verdict.
A very long time ago I did a British A level in history and the largest component of the course was the French Revolution. The course highlighted that by the time of the height of the Terror (say, summer '94) political charges (sedition, treason, etc.) were funnelled through the Tribunal in a streamlined procedure. (It also emphasised the power of Fouquier-Tounville, which I, quite possibly wrongly, ascribe to a simplification since this was a course aimed at 17-18 year olds.) I've forgotten almost everything I knew about the Revolution but the bare book or two I've read since has said something more or less similar, but without giving any details of the procedure.
Do we have reliable records on exactly how the Tribunal would try the accused? I seem to (perhaps unreliably) recall that they were eventually denied defence counsels; did the Tribunal then directly try the defendants as a board of magistrates? Was there a prosecuting counsel and a jury? Or a prosecuting counsel and a board of magistrates? How many judges or magistrates would preside? And, come to that, how often did Fouquier-Tounville preside and what actual especial powers did he have, if any?
For a decade following the midterms of 1890, the Farmer-Labor Party found themselves facing landslide defeat after defeat, reduced to a tiny minority in both houses of Congress. Yet, the midterms of 1902 have become a beacon of hope for the party, with Federal Republicans losing their House majority, 8 Senate seats, and defeating Farmer-Labor by only 1.3% in the popular vote. With the party ascendant anew and unions growing at the fastest rate in decades amidst countless strikes, party leaders see a chance of victory on the horizon for the first time in years, with the once thoroughly dry party of John Bidwell becoming increasingly wet under the influence of a nationally influential newspaperman.
William Randolph Hearst: With the defection of the New York Tribune to the Federal Republican Party following the 1874 death of Horace Greeley, the Labor and later Farmer-Labor parties found themselves lacking a major voice in the press, with Tom Watson's Weekly failing to expand greatly beyond rural areas. In 1889 stepped William Randolph Hearst into this void, beginning what would become a nationwide media empire some have credited with turning the Farmer-Labor base against prohibition. Hearst successfully won election as Governor of New York over the midterms of 1902, only the state's second labor aligned Governor since 1854, and gained attention for his refusal to enforce prohibition, implementation of the referendum system in New York, cutting government spending through a waste commission, and largely successful efforts to place public utilities under the control of municipal governments and weaken the Tammany Hall Federal Republican machine, successful prosecuting several Tammany-affiliated politicians on charges of corruption. Hearst has sought the presidency as a unity candidate for anti-prohibition Farmer-Laborites, seeking to deny President Dewey the Liberal Anti-Prohibition Party's nomination if he seeks re-election and possibly even form a coalition between the LAP and Farmer-Labor. Campaigning upon bringing his achievements as Governor to the national level, Hearst has also endorsed a further reduction in tariffs, the establishment of a central bank, and an end to prison labor being used for marketed goods, while taking a moderate stand on foreign policy, having supported the Pacific War but opposed the expansionist efforts of the Houston Administration in the war's aftermath, while strongly opposing the British Empire and praising both Pr
... keep reading on reddit β‘I saw a post recently that pointed out that all the max level gemstones contained quotes from their respective element's Archon. In particular, the Varunada Lazurite Gemstone caught my eye. One commenter and one theory posted a while back theorized that the Hydro Archon could be based off of Louis XVI, but I quickly saw similarities with the opposite side of the French Revolution: Maximilien Robespierre.
For those unfamiliar, Robespierre was an influential and divisive figure during the French Revolution. He is best known for his role as a member of the Committee of Public Safety, personally signing 542 arrests during the Reign of Terror. This period was marked by mass arrests and executions. This was made possible by the Revolutionary Tribunal, a court instituted for the trial of political offenders.
Here we see our first similarity: Both Robespierre and the Hydro Archon make use of and place importance in a Tribunal. The Hydro Archon even goes so far as to say that people here [Fontaine] can only be judged by laws and the Tribunal, not by the gods.
This mirrors the state-sponsored atheistic religion established during the Revolution, the Cult of Reason. This was a religion made to replace Roman Catholicism, as revolutionists were largely anti-clericalism. It espoused the pursuit of perfection of mankind through the attainment of Truth and Liberty.
This brings us to our second point, where the Hydro Archon says that the Tribunal may judge even her. This is further confirmation that the Archon puts justice above her own deity status, but this also has a parallel in the Revolutionary Tribunal.
While there was an early precedent for the Tribunal being able to try its own members in the case of Girondins vs Jean-Paul Marat, they still had some protection as the Convention had to vote to try them. The Prairial Laws, written by Robespierre, removed this protection and expedited trials to an extreme degree. Several political factions were purged and executed. No member of the Tribunal was safe, not even Robespierre.
The Thermidorian Reaction in particular used this clause to devastating effect; when Robespierre threatened another purge in a speech, the Convention turned on him and issued an arrest. Robespierre was executed the day after. While it is unlikely the Archon will be executed, it's entirely possible that she may be ousted and tried by her own Tribunal.
