Convert WGS 84 reference ellipsoid altitude to actual altitude

I am developing an Android app in React Native and using react-native-background-geolocation as a library to get GPS data in the background. Everything works perfectly except for the altitude.

As per the library docs it says that altitiude is in meters above the WGS 84 reference ellipsoid, which does not give me the reading I want (I live on a hill near the sea, and it gives me -ve altitiude). How can I convert this/get my altitiude with reference to the sea-level?

My config for GPS as per the library is:

BackgroundGeolocation.configure({

desiredAccuracy: BackgroundGeolocation.HIGH_ACCURACY,

stationaryRadius: 10,

distanceFilter: 10,

notificationTitle: 'Test',

notificationText: 'Navigation',

debug: true,

startOnBoot: false,

stopOnTerminate: true,

locationProvider: BackgroundGeolocation.RAW_PROVIDER,

interval: 10000,

fastestInterval: 5000,

});

I need it to work without connection to the internet

Using a reference ellipsoid as an elevation reference

Totally hypothetical here, but it seems like it would be more sensible to use the reference ellipsoid as a reference for elevation measurements rather than "sea level".

Doing so would remove all the calculations required for getting GPS elevation, for example. It would simply return your elevation above (or below) the reference ellipsoid and call it good.

I could see how this would cause confusion because all of a sudden the official elevation of known points would change drastically, for example. But it seems like the payoff of having a uniform reference would be greater in the long run than having to constantly try to figure out what sea level is for any given spot on the earth. We could then just start saying such-and-such point is x or y meters above or below reference, rather than sea level.

Would this system have any serious implications that I'm missing?

EDIT: I found this, which at least partially explains it: https://youtu.be/dX6a6kCk3Po?t=535

GPS discrepancies

I'm not a surveyor but I've hired a few over the years and got a question.

Question: How big is the discrepancy between wgs 84 nad 83? And, how does one go about 'marrying' these up? Is this common?

Neighbor and I are having a dispute over a few feet thanks to two different surveys, one using wgs 84, the other using nad 83.

I've reached out to my surveyor about this question but he's 2 seconds from retirement and I'm not sure he'll get to my question before he quits. Here's hoping this is a common and easy fix.

Synthesis of "Unconventional Flying Objects: A Scientific Analysis," by ex-NASA scientist Paul Hill. [Or why you too should boo the woo.] [Part 1/X]

I'm going to break the synthesis up into a short series of posts over the next few days as it will otherwise probably be too long for most readers to digest easily.

Introduction

Paul Hill was a rocket scientist for NACA/NASA in the 1950s, and developed the first tilt-to-control flying platforms to model UFO flight characteristics with conventional propulsion technology.

Hill had two sightings of UFOs during his life, the first of which was on July 16, 1952, near the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. When Hill reported his first sighting to his boss at NASA, his boss asked him whether he had been drinking and dismissed Hill's observations. Hill was unperturbed, however, and began an unofficial effort to collect data from other NASA scientists who had their own encounters. Hill then set about trying to prove UFOs conform to the the laws of physics rather than defying them, as part of a strategy to make the scientific community take reports of UFOs more seriously.

Hill lays down his theory of how UFOs work in his book, Unconventional Flying Objects: A Scientific Analysis, which was not published until after his death. Hill never saw a penny from his book; his theory is a pure exercise in scientific inquiry, for which he received zero credit or public acclaim during his lifetime.

What's in a name?

As you can tell from the title of the book, Hill preferred not to use Captain Edward Ruppelt's term "UFOs." Hill argued the craft where not "unidentified" (because observers did in fact identify them as unconventional craft), and that the use of "flying" obscurred the reality the craft were capable of transmedium travel in water and outer space, as well as in Earth's atmosphere. However, Hill did favor the use of "object" to describe the craft, because the craft are physical things. According to Hill's analysis, UFOs are not a projection of some Jungian universal consciousness, or an aparation or hallucination or trick of the eye; they are physical craft similar to human aircraft: metallic and hard; dense and massive.

[I agree with Hill the craft are physical objects, and believe the switch in language to "UAP" and "the phenomena" is part of a MIC strategy to dilute the topic of nuts-and-bolts craft with werewolves and ghosts and other bullshit. Consequently, I am going to refer to UFOs hereafter as "field-vectored cr

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

What is the difference (if any) between eversion of a sphere vs. eversion an ellipsoid?

I'm referring to the concept described in this video.

Are there more steps with an ellipsoid? Do they have to be modified? I assume you would want to make the "endcaps" (as shown in the vid) at the polar co-vertices where the surface was the flattest and an intersecting plane would produce a circle, but could you offset from this axis and have it still work? If so, is there a limit to this deviation?

Herete, new blood.

I heard you just got a job here looking after the ranch.

I hope you don't come to regret it. Try not to die.

Spilled guts are awfully hard to clean up.

-

SHIFT TIMINGS:

1st shift - dawn (6AM) to noon (12PM)

2nd shift - midday (2PM) to dusk (6PM)

pay - two (2) golden drachmas a day

-

  1. Get here by sunrise. Any later and you'll be fed to the critters.
  2. My office is right by the entrance. You won't miss it. Even if you do- Don't miss it.
  3. I will be waiting there for you on the dawn of the first day to help you figure things out.
  4. I will give you a gun and your work uniform. You must have it on the entire time you are in the ranch outside of my office. No matter how ridiculous you think it looks, you should never ever neglect to wear it. It does not matter what you think of it. It has its purpose, as you have yours.
  5. Speaking of purpose, the uniform's is to (that is, should the gods will it) protect you from Rus.
  6. Rus is the owner's hound. If you think it has two heads, you are wrong. Look away.
  7. It is larger, stronger, faster and smarter than you. It guards the ranch from intruders, and to it- you are an intruder, therefore its prey to do away with however it wishes to.
  8. Just wear the damned uniform. Should you foolishly choose not to- you'll regret it. And if you don't, I will. Just hate having to clear bloody messes caused by idiotic, arrogant humans. You think you're immortal, don't you?

-

  1. Once you wear the uniform, leave to the field at the center of the ranch. The further in you go, the harder it will be to see what lies beyond the perimeter of the ranch. This is normal. It is nothing more than natural fog. Do not attempt to leave the ranch before your shift ends.
  2. You may enter the field. It is surrounded on all six sides by barbed wire to keep the cattle in, but there is a gate that will allow you to enter, and guide the cattle out. Walk about the fence a couple of times- you should come across it after a few rounds around the field.
  3. The cattle will be blood red. This is normal. In fact, you expected this. You will treat this as ordinary and never mention it, or it will be the last thing you do. They get offended easily.
  4. Should you ever see black or white cattle, kill it at once. Use the gun you were given. You may dump its carcass in the trough right outside my office. Do not h

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
