ELI5: Why does NATO operate reconnaissance aircraft?
I have, to be generous to myself, a very basic understanding of the purpose and function of NATO - however my understanding was basically that it's a sort of umbrella organisation for various commonly aligned militaries.
According to a news report over the weekend, a civilian aircraft landing in Russia was instructed to descend because a NATO reconnaissance aircraft was on course to intersect with its path.
What would NATO be doing operating such an aircraft and does proactive intelligence gathering fall within the organisation's purview?
