Cork Oak (Quercus suber) growing in Nova Scotia?

The leaf they pulled out of the envelope was some variety of Red/Black oak. It was definitely not a Cork Oak (Quercus suber). Cork oaks have evergreen leaves that look more like holly leaves than what most people would think of as oak leaves. However it is not completely out of the question that European visitors could have brought some seeds with them. All the botanist said (at least what I saw on TV) is that the seeds are not viable (my guess is that they were probably not matured seeds to start with). Curious that he seems to have said nothing about the leaf. Those "canopy oaks" they show in the old photos could be a type of hybrid European poplar (populus alba) known locally as "silver oaks". They have thick bark after about 60 years but have very weak, useless, wood.

The various first nations peoples of eastern north america definitely carried seeds of Black Walnut and other useful trees from the south to the recently glaciated northern regions. If those roots are a more southern species of red/black oak, that could be the explanation.

The south-west coast of Nova Scotia does have one of the "warmest" winter climates in Canada (except for British Columbia Coast and a few places along the north shore of Lake Erie). It is surprising what will grow in Nova Scotia. Several decades ago, on a whim, I planted some of the imported large Italian chestnut seeds that appear in grocery stores every Christmas. They have thrived despite the cold winters and heavy soil they were planted in. I later planted some swamp cypress (The same species that grows in Louisiana) in a swamp on my property in NS and they are thriving and starting to develop the characteristic buttressed trunks. (Perhaps in a hundred years someone will notice them and conclude they must have been planted by Spanish conquistadors diverting treasure ships centuries ago). The Sierra Sequoias from the mountains of California will also grow in Nova Scotia, as well as numerous oak species from the southwest US. However, when I did attempt to plant Mediterranean oaks about 20 years ago (Q. suber and Q. ilex) they were obviously too stressed by the wet winters and died out after a few years. Based on my own experience with introducing oaks into NS (about 50 different species) I would say it is possible they may have had a particularly tough strain of cork oak (perhaps from a high elevation area?) but it seems unlikely. The cold, very wet, frozen soil is very tough on s

TIL Cork is made from the bark of a tree, Quercus suber, or the cork oak. These trees have thick, rugged bark from which cork is made. In cork cultivation you don’t have to chop down a tree to make corks, you can harvest the bark without harming the tree, and repeat it again in another 7-10 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Que…

Quercus Suber (Cork Oak)

I did this yesterday, and was pretty pleased with the results. I took the photo planning on posting it here, but as I looked at it some doubts started to form. It looked out of proportion. The trunk was too long with no taper, and it was just too tall for the size of the pot. Strangely enough it looked ok in the 'flesh', but in the photo it looked wrong.

So, this morning I took the plunge and chopped off the top part of the trunk and wired a lower branch to form the main trunk. Here it is now. I think it looks better, but expert opinion would be appreciated.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Help with avoiding limonene and linalool

So I’ve finally had a patch test (yay!) and found out I have a contact allergy to limonene and linalool. So happy to have this information, but I’m really struggling to find products avoiding these ingredients, particularly makeup.

It’s easy enough avoiding fragrance/parfum where limonene won’t be listed specifically, but what I’m having trouble with is other ingredients. Limonene and linalool can be found naturally in hundreds of oils and plants, so I’m having to google every single ingredient on my makeup to find out whether these extracts contain L&L. This wouldn’t be so difficult if the information was readily available, but most of the time I will google something like QUERCUS SUBER BARK EXTRACT, and it will take me ages to find out whether it contains limonene, and even then I’m not entirely sure because the only source of information seems to be academic papers, and for lots of ingredients I can’t find out whether L&L are in them. Does anyone have any tips to make this process easier? Or know of some magical database that lists every ingredient containing L&L lol. I can’t believe how difficult it is to find this information :(

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies 😂

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
