Spas and Public bathing
I live in LA and frequent WiSpa which has been in the news lately for what I think are utterly nonsense reasons.
But I wanted to share my connection to WiSpa and how I became more comfortable with my body by visiting a public bath. My first time going there was awkward, tons of men of all ages and ethnicities totally naked, like it was nothing. This was a new and uncomfortable experience for me, not helped by the fact that I went with a male friend. But after some apprehension, I slowly started to relax, and then enjoy myself. The baths are relaxing, and being surrounded by other naked people without expectation is liberating. I felt free from social conceptions of my nudity and my body. Whatβs more i no longer saw other men as anything other than people. I have since made regular visits to treat myself and relax. And part of my relaxation has come from how comfortable I have become with both my nudity and that of other.
It sometimes reminds me of films and tropes of men in America in the early part of the 20th century fraternizing in a steam bath. I wonder what we lost by this tradition becoming less prominent in us culture.
Interested if anyone has had a similar experience or something else theyβd like to share about public bathing.

In Roman cities, so many aspects of what we think of as private home life - eating, bathing, shaving - were done in public. How did this impact cultural feelings of community, home life, and personal privacy?
I'm reading Mary Beard's The Fires of Vesuvius (my first Mary Beard book and I'm utterly captivated) and was interested to learn that most ordinary folks ate out at street shops. I'm sure we all saw those beautiful "fast food" shops that were recently excavated at Pompeii! How did this wider phenomenon of doing things that we would take for granted as happening inside the home (cooking, bathing, eating) change cultural ideas of privacy? As modern people, would Roman notions of privacy vs public life seem strange to us?
