A list of puns related to "Palomar Observatory"
First trip to California was last year for our honeymoon. We landed in LA, and drove the coast up to San Francisco. We are coming back for our first anniversary and chose San Diego!
So, that drive, in particular going through Big Sur, made us appreciate driving. We live in flat Texas where there is little scenery. Since we will be back in your great state we thought another cool drive would be fun.
I am plotting a course that takes us up the coast, to the observatory, and around the loop on that side of the mountain. I have already found stops at the Boucher Hill Fire Tower, and plan to go to the state park as well.
I am curious if there are any other stops you can suggest on the way up there, any other routes in the area that are scenic, maybe specific places on the mountain to check out.
Also, is there anywhere to stop close to the mountain that would be good to pick up a picnic lunch to eat while we are up there?
Thanks in advance!
Been in San Diego for 10yrs, and would really like to see the Big vast expanse of universe out there, and forget the troubles and worries here for a little bit.
I know at night they are often busy doing science. I know they have guided tours during the days too. A lot of the astronomy students at SDSU intern there or go for studies on Dwarf planets or Kuiper belt objects. All my friends in Astronomy have graduated and left, moved for PhD's or other parts of the world.
Wishing for an opportunity and good luck to go and see some of the wonders of space up close perhaps.
This weekend is moonless and I would like to take some pictures of the sky. Does anybody know whether it is allowed to be on the observatory grounds at night?
Edit: Thanks for all the replies. I knew they have a campground there, I just thought it would be nice to have the observatory together with the night sky in one picture. Will look further into Anza Borrego.
Anyone interested in riding up to Palomar this weekend? Sunday or Monday (if you've got it off)? Looking to do a pretty early ride while it's still nice and cool. ~5-6 hours, I suspect.
Happy to meet people along the way, I'm coming from SD proper.
I have been the the observatory several times during the day, however I've always wanted to take a look through the 200" telescope at night.
