Anyone know any resources for learning Ojibwa or other indigenous languages?

I'm looking for introductory materials for learning aboriginal vocabulary and grammar. Does anyone have any experience on the subject?

I learned a new term today, Wetiko, that describes why we suffer in a capitalist society.

Here is an except from an article.

β€œWetiko is an Algonquin word for a cannibalistic spirit that is driven by greed, excess, and selfish consumption (in Ojibwa it is windigo, wintiko in Powhatan). It deludes its host into believing that cannibalizing the life-force of others (others in the broad sense, including animals and other forms of Gaian life) is a logical and morally upright way to live.

Wetiko short-circuits the individual’s ability to see itself as an enmeshed and interdependent part of a balanced environment and raises the self-serving ego to supremacy. It is this false separation of self from nature that makes this cannibalism, rather than simple murder. It allows – indeed commands – the infected entity to consume far more than it needs in a blind, murderous daze of self-aggrandizement. Author Paul Levy, in an attempt to find language accessible for Western audiences, describes it as β€˜malignant egophrenia’ – the ego unchained from reason and limits, acting with the malevolent logic of the cancer cell. We will use the term wetiko as it is the original term, and reminds us of the wisdom of Indigenous cultures, for those who have the ears to hear.

Wetiko can describe both the infection and the body infected; a person can be infected by wetiko or, in cases where the infection is very advanced, they can personify the disease: β€˜a wetiko.’ This holds true for cultures and systems; all can be described as being wetiko if they routinely manifest these traits.

The reader can probably sense from these two traits the wetiko nature of modern capitalism. Its insatiable hunger for finite resources; its disregard for the pain of groups and cultures it consumes; its belief in consumption as savior; its overriding obsession with its own material growth; and its viral spread across the surface of the planet. It is wholly accurate to describe neoliberal capitalism as the primary cannibalizing force of life on this planet. It is not the only truth β€” capitalism has also facilitated an explosion of human life and ingenuity β€” but when taken as a whole, capitalism is certainly eating through the life-force of this planet in service of its own growth.”

Finding deities…?

A few months ago, I went on a week-long camping trip on Lake Superior (one of the Great Lakes in North America, if you don’t know). In the Ojibwe language, Lake Superior is referred to as Gichigami.

I climbed down a steep dirt path hidden in the trees near the campsite, and got to a really rocky area. The water was mostly calm, so I swam around. I’ve always loved swimming.

After a few minutes, waves started crashing against the rocks. I scuttled out lest I get smashed to bits, and gazed at the beauty of Gichigami. And suddenly, the crashing waves stopped.

Keep in mind, at this point I was an agnostic atheist. I didn’t really believe in any sort of gods. But Gichigami? Gichigami was alive.

Either out of sense of humor or a sense of reverence (I honestly don’t know which it was), I climbed back to the campsite.

On my trip, I was kind of surprised to see that many of the locals referred to Gichigami as β€œshe”. β€œShe’s pretty cold today.”

During this week-long trip, I swam in Gichigami many times. And after that first instance of waves, I never had any problems with the water.

Perhaps, that first time I swam in her waters, she was telling me to get out. And when I heeded her request, she took that as a sign of respect.

I felt a profound, spiritual respect for Gichigami that week, and I’ve felt that respect since. Gichigami isn’t just a lake, she’s a goddess.

Has anybody had a similar experience? Where the existence of a particular god, goddess, or other spiritual force was made clear to you?

Edit: I’m feeling a strong urge to tell you how Gichigami tends to appear to me. I don’t know if it’s just me wanting to tell you or Gichigami telling me to tell you, but that’s beside the point.

Gichigami appears to me as an Ojibwa woman. She has long hair that flows like her waters; it’s free and formless, and isn’t styled at all. Despite being ancient, having come into being just after the last ice age, she likes to appear as young. She wears a fairly unremarkable dress made from buckskin, decorated with small agates and blue beads. She doesn’t wear shoes.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
