Ohmic Contact Puns

As far as my understanding goes, an ohmic contact is just any resistive contact (usually metal or metal silicide) between metal and a heavily-doped semiconductor. My question is, why is it necessary to have this very small resistivity between metal and semiconductor? It seems like there would be no harm just letting the metal and semiconductor be in direct contact.

Firstly, I apologize if this goes against the sub rules since it's not technically component-level — however, I couldn't think of anywhere else to ask this (it doesn't feel right on AskPhysics since I'm dealing with physical components here, which is the only other place that comes to mind.) Feel free to point me in the right direction if this is indeed the wrong place to ask.

So, I cracked open a 1n4001 diode to do some messing around and discovered some rather odd things. The picture above shows one half of the diode after the casing was removed (unfortunately, it cracked in half while attempting to open it). The lead to the left is the anode. Despite the fact it is cracked in half, I discovered that I had miraculously not destroyed its function as it still functions perfectly well as a diode (the lead being one contact and the small plate-like part on the far right being the other). Thus I came to the conclusion that I had merely cracked through the n-layer (indeed, the other remaining half of the diode appears much thinner), so hooray.

Immediately, when looking at the grayish silicon part I noticed the clear dividing line between the thin "plate" on the right and the "block" on the left, so I figured this was the boundary between the p-n junction. Not so. When I measure the voltage drop on the entire diode, it reads about 0.6V (as expected), but the voltage drop between just those two plates seems to be around 2V (hard to judge as it was difficult to get a good reading in with the relatively huge probes I have — the magnification above is 45X. Perhaps that doesn't even function as a diode and my multimeter is just making up garbage?) And in fact, the center block does NOT register conductivity to the lead!

So, this has me really puzzled. I've come to the conclusion that there must be in fact three "blocks" composing the diode: the one on the right (n-layer), one on the far left (p-layer) that I just can't see very well as it must covered by the grayish substance (probably solder), and the mystery block in the middle. What on earth could the one in the middle be? Is it the depletion layer? I was under the impression that the "depletion layer" isn't actually a physical thing but rather something that just occurs when you place P and N layers together... is this conception completely wrong?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
