A list of puns related to "Electromigration"
I am currently doing research for my graduate program which partially involves inducing electromigration (EM) on an FPGA. We measure the slowdown caused by EM by using a Ring Oscillator (RO). Our reasoning behind this is electromigration would gradually make the wire thinner, which would increase the resistance of the wire and therefore decrease the switching speed of the wire, making the RO slower. Unfortunately our ROs didn't show any noticeable slowdown caused by EM. Upon further research, the only concern I've seen in regards to EM is it creating an open or a short with another wire, which would cause chip failure. Does anyone know if EM would cause slower switching speeds? If so, could you guide me to a source that talks about it? Thanks!
I've had my 4790k running 4.8GHz @ 1.36v for around 3 months now. Thought the voltage was low enough to be viable long-term, nope.
Everything has been running great up to today, zero problems in games/daily usage. On a whim I decided to redo my 980 Ti OC and started up Time Spy, almost instant hard crash. That's odd, tried it again, got about 30 seconds in and then hard crash. Thought it might've been the GPU so I reset everything to stock, hard crash.
"Oh please no"
Went into the BIOS and dropped the CPU to 4.7GHz, loaded up Time Spy, got about halfway through, hard crash.
"GOD PLEASE NO"
Dropped to 4.6GHz @ 1.34v, loaded up Time Spy, and was able to complete the benchmark.
200MHz loss. And I guarantee it'll just keep dropping from here on out. This is the first CPU that I've kneecapped due to a dirty OC. Feel like a total fucking moron. I'm considering just running the thing at stock to prolong its life until hardware prices start actually making any kind of sense again, then just doing a complete rebuild. Better yet, I should just buy a fucking prebuilt since my stupid ass obviously isn't skilled enough to do this stuff on my own.
Ugh this has me kicking myself so hard. Lost a decent chunk of performance just because I was greedy. Definition of stupid.
Safe Vcore for daily hammering: 1.325v
Safe Vcore for gaming and moderat workloads/streaming: ?v
Stable OC and V:
4.325GHz @ 1.325v and LLC High & 87*C max temp with Prime95 heat/load/stability stress test
4.4GHz @ 1.4v and LLC High & 89*C max temp with Prime95 heat/load/stability stress test
This is with my Ryzen 3800X on a Gigabyte X470 board with 3600mt/s C16 RAM. There is a decent performance increase with some benchmarks going from 4.325GHz to 4.4GHz all core, and I'll probably wait for the last iteration of Zen CPU's for AM4 before upgrading my CPU again from my last setup, so in the grand scheme of things I'm not too worried, but for the short term while all my PC building tools are in storage (just sold my house) I don't need to toast it while I'm waiting on my next house's completion.
Question: Would 1.4v, with temps under control, be find for gaming and moderate work loads for long term usage (3-5 years)?
According to this YouTube video, an NVIDIA rep claims that their cards have their default voltage set so that they last five years of normal use, and at the maximum allowed voltage setting, Pascal cards are only good for about one year before electromigration starts to cause problems.
My GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (EVGA, FTW3 Elite) gains only about 50 MHz when the voltage is turned up so I'm not using the overvolt feature all that much, and in fact, I sometimes run games with the card set at a lower power target to save energy.
That said, I've been using the overvolt function on and off for the last month since I built the system and have not noticed any drop in stable clock frequency or other indications that electromigration is impacting performance, then again, that's only one month of use. Also, I tend to think that the claim is based on worst-case conditions where the card is run at full load for extended periods of time, on the reference cooler (which is less effective than most aftermarket coolers). Furthermore, EVGA provides a three-year standard warranty and offers extended warranty options up to a whopping ten years.
Even so, it's not unlikely that Pascal's design is more sensitive to electromigration, unlike CPUs, which are often perfectly happy with continuous voltages of up to 1.35V without significant degradation over the intended life of the processor. Consider, too, that GPUs tend to use far more power than most CPUs.
Given all these facts, and considering that Pascal has been on the market for well over a year, has anyone experienced or read about actual electromigration problems, such as reduced overclocking limits or instability at stock, caused by extended operation at higher voltages?
I have been unclear on this subject for a while now. For example, people have said that you shouldn't really push a 5820k beyond 1.35v for daily use because it will cause degradation over time due to electromigration. What I understand the idea as is you will always degrade you cpu faster with more vcore because the electromigration will increase because your cooler won't cool the cpu any more. But if you can keep the cpu the same temperature as lets say, stock. would the electromigration increase nonetheless?
tl;dr is electromigration purely temperature dependent or are there other factors?
I have a good EK liquid system, where I can get safely my system (Asus X99 + i7 6850k) up to 4.7GHz @1.4V without ever getting past 55-60C.
However, I can't seem to get further without hitting my core voltage at 1.4 or higher.
Now, this mobo has a physical switch to "unlock" > 1.5V for core voltage. I hear all about this "electromigration", but does this mean that "no matter what temperature, that much current will damage the device"? I hear people saying that 1.35-1.40 Vcore is all anyone should ever go. Is this advice for normal aftermarket air - AIO liquid cooling?
If I make sure my temps are NEVER >80C, does it even matter, since all that current is still flowing through the chip? Why does Asus provide this >1.5V core switch? Even their windows overclocking app does pretty good at hitting high Fmax.... but it automatically runs up to 1.5V* (!!); this app won't configure higher (manually/automatically), even with the >1.5V switch activated.
Are there any studies/papers/experience of "I was running core voltage at 1.6/1,7 on rock-solid liquid cooling, and my CPU only lasted 2 years"?
Or is this switch, and anything above 1.5V, stupid marketing and I truly am risking a substantial reduction in life for my CPU?
Do your worst!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

Me grabbing a soda from my (what I thought was) half full 12pk...
Notices there's only 2;
Me: "Awe man... This is a damn bird box!" Her: "What the hell does that mean?!" Me: (Pulls both cans out & shows them to her) "It's only got Toucans."
I'm not ashamed to admit the look on her face was glorious.
I was just sitting there doing nothing.
