Hi, I’m a prospective student and considering CSUSB as an option for transfer from a CC. I’ve heard some things from previous alumni about the undergrad program, but I thought I’d reach out and see if anyone previously or currently attending can tell me their experience in this program? And what can I expect? How would you rate it out of 10 to summarize your whole experience, 1 being the worst 10 being the best

Abstract

Beef contains functional fatty acids such as conjugated linoleic acid and long-chain fatty acids. This review summarizes results from studies comparing the fatty acid composition of beef from cattle fed either grass or grain-based feed. Since functional lipid components are contributed through dietary consumption of beef, the fatty acid composition is reported on mg/100 g of meat basis rather than on a percentage of total fat basis. Beef from grass-fed contains lesser total fat than that from grain-fed in all breeds of cattle. Reduced total fat content also influences the fatty acid composition of beef. A 100 g beef meat from grass-fed cattle contained 2,773 mg less total saturated fatty acids (SFA) than that from the same amount of grain-fed. Grass-fed also showed a more favorable SFA lipid profile containing less cholesterol-raising fatty acids (C12:0 to C16:0) but contained a lesser amount of cholesterol-lowering C18:0 than grain-fed beef. In terms of essential fatty acids, grass-fed beef showed greater levels of trans-vaccenic acid and long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA; EPA, DPA, DHA) than grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef also contains an increased level of total n-3 PUFA which reduced the n-6 to n-3 ratio thus can offer more health benefits than grain-fed. The findings signify that grass-fed beef could exert protective effects against a number of diseases ranging from cancer to cardiovascular disease (CVD) as evidenced by the increased functional omega-3 PUFA and decreased undesirable SFA. Although grain-fed beef showed lesser EPA, DPA, and DHA, consumers should be aware that greater portions of grain-fed beef could also achieve a similar dietary intake of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Noteworthy, grain-fed beef contained higher total monounsaturated fatty acid that have beneficial roles in the amelioration of CVD risks than grass-fed beef. In Hanwoo beef, grain-fed showed higher EPA and DHA than grass-fed beef.

Searching for online courses to fulfill pre-reqs for U of A in food science, clinical nutrition and nutritional metabolism.

Hi everyone, I'm looking into applying for U of Arizona's one year Masters program and having a hard time finding the below pre-reqs online.

Specifically

  • Food Science
  • Clinical Nutrition/Medical Nutrition Therapy (with NCP)
  • Nutritional Metabolism

Note: for Food Science I saw Rutger's was offering something, I know Tufts have some classes too but not sure they are specific enough to meet the requirements and I dont know if I can take CEU and have them count towards the requirement.

Thanks in advance

Science, advocacy, and quackery in nutritional books: an analysis of conflicting advice and purported claims of nutritional best-sellers (2020)

Full-text: doi.org/10.1057/s41599-020-0415-6

Introduction

>While many individuals seek dietary advice, the same percentage of consumers report seeking nutritional information from family and friends as from healthcare professionals (30%), and roughly the same percentage of consumers report seeking nutritional information from news articles or headlines, or news on TV as from a conversation with a registered dietitian or nutritionist (23–24%) (Internation Food Information Council Foundation, 2018). Misinformed nutritional beliefs once formed can become pervasive (Casazza et al., 2013).

Methods

>[...] best-selling books in the category of β€œHealth and Fitness”, which includes books related to health, fitness, and medicine that are aimed at nonprofessionals. [...] Almost half of the best sellers on Health and Fitness are primarily about nutrition advice. The proportion would be greater if one were to include culinary recipe books [...] we identified 100 nutrition-focused books among the top-227, after excluding 47 books that were on pregnancy, exercise, beauty, and fashion; 8 recipe or reference books that did not contain nutritional advice; and 59 that touched on multiple themes [...]

Interesting to me:

>We also conducted a text-mining analysis of the full text of seven of the ten best-selling books to determine whether the terms β€œsystematic review”, β€œmeta-analysis”, and β€œrandomiz(s)ed” in the setting of controlled/clinical trials were used. Three of the top ten best-selling books were excluded from this analysis, as they were not available in electronic form.

Results

Fig. 1: Education and occupations of best-selling authors.

>The highest levels of educational attainment (a) and the occupations (b) of the 83 best-selling authors based on available information. The most common highest degree was a medical degree and the most common occupation was physician. M.D. Doctor of Medicine, N.M.D./N.D. Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Ph.D Doctor of Philosophy.

Why official science hasn't been able to figure out answers to POIS despite many other things like physics, nutritional health etc. having been figured out?

Is it just that in the past nobody ever had enough collective interest/understanding that POIS is a real thing and most people who had it just did abstinence and didn't bother trying to understand why some people never felt those symptoms after orgasming while they did so the fact that POIS only recently became categorized and researched is why we do not have coherent answers yet?

I feel kind of sad and frustrated about the fact that there is a likelihood we might never have full answers/treatments to POIS at least officially during our lifetimes as all new disorders especially more complex ones like autism and POIS kind of falls under the complex category too, usually took many decades till with enough effort/funding/focus first puzzle pieces were able to be put together and officially documented

+all the bureucratic processes of approving researches extend those things even more months further

I genuinely believe that our only and primary focus and possibly the highest hope out of all we have now is to recruit AS MANY POISers as possible to this community and POISCenter as then there will be more demand and possibly funding for POIS to be researched in depth

But to do that we have to redo years of programming that many POISers who happened to come across NoFap/Semen Retention communities first before learning about POIS being a thing and not being natural at all have experienced, it is not impossible I have de-brainwashed many SRers and many of them even found ways to reduce their POIS but it takes a lot of personal time/effort/psychological willingness as there are like 200 arguments that nofappers/semen retainers will often throw at you before accepting that it's not normal to have POIS and that most people have never had it

So is anybody willing to organize recruitment and discovery and media awareness boosting regarding POIS?

I already edited rational wiki page on nofap to include a chapter for POIS but other larger sites that have posts regarding nofap/masturbation and such things might be harder to get them to know about POIS as it would require sending emails, is anybody a skilled diplomat and PR master here who knows how to write emails in a way that could make more mainstream articles/websites relating to sexuality/masturbation/myths regarding masturbation include that for some people why they might speak of those masturbation myths is because unlike most people they have a rarer disorder that causes them to become worse off after each or

UBC FNH major or UofT Double Major in Nutritional Sciences and Health and Disease

Hi, I was just wondering if you guys have any opinions on staying at UofT or transferring back to UBC. I have been at UofT for the past two years, but last year I stayed home (Vancouver) due to COVID-19. I got an offer to come back to UBC for the food nutrition and health major but have no idea if I should come back home to UBC or stay at UofT. I will be going into my third year even if I am transferring because I got my transfer credits approved. My dream is to go into med school, so which option would be better? In terms of extracurriculars, I have more at UofT but can redo my GPA at UBC. My GPA at UofT though is increasing each semester. But, the third-year courses seem more interesting at UofT because if I transfer back to UBC it would be more basic science courses like biology, chem and physics, and also nutrition-based courses. Any advice?

Is Nutritional Sciences a hard degree to internally transfer into?

I want to go to medical school but I am undeclared right now because I was not excepted into biomedical engineering. I want to finish college quickly, so I don’t want to be changing majors. After my first semester I should be able to reapply for natural sciences but I can’t apply to the engineering department until my first year is complete (which is still a long shot to get in.) Is nutritional sciences a viable option on a premed track or would it be better to get a BME degree at another school like UTSA or A&M?

Chance Me! Nutritional Sciences Major! (Community College to Cornell)

Update: What do you all think for UC Berkeley? I am a California resident

I am hoping to apply to Cornell Fall 2021 as a transfer student from a community college. Here are my stats!

Demographics: URM; daughter of immigrants.

High school:

  • Graduated in May 2018 with a 3.0 GPA - I did not have a lot of guidance in high school/college to the point where I didn't even know people were preparing to apply for colleges until it was senior year and everyone started talking about it though I totally accept all responsibility for poor grades.
  • A couple of leadership extracurriculars

Community College

  • out of state
  • 3.5 GPA (upward trend)
  • Extracurriculars: Events director of a nonprofit in the Bay Area that helps the unfortunate; youth coordinator of another nonprofit that empowers disadvantaged communities world-wide with access to quality healthcare and education as well as leading various other nutrition-related projects within this nonprofit; founder and president of a youth group that builds a bond between the youth of a marginalized community in the Bay Area; events coordinator for a similar youth group of a marginalized community in Sacramento; volunteered for about a year at Stanford Hospital; third term president of my college's nutrition club (saved the club from dissolving); currently a paid intern for a dietitian in NY (shadowing, assisting with paperwork, learning nutrition with real-world scenarios and managing the dietitian's social media); worked a job as a tutor for little kids to complete their homework and develop better academic-based habits.

Intended Major: Applying into Nutritional Sciences (on Cornell's website, this major comes under both human ecology and CALS but I'm not sure if that is possible so I don't know if I read it right?)
