Why is there this notion in the West of "Nazi superscience"?

This question is inspired by the r/AskHistorians question Why did the Nazi's have such remarkable scientists?

Nowadays, there is a common misconception in the West about "Nazi superscience", and some westerners even credit Nazis for the B2 Spirit bomber and the Apollo program. In contrast, actual Nazi scientists like Wernher von Braun acknowledged the non-German scientists who inspired their work.

Why does this notion exist? For example, wouldn't it be in the interest of the USA to fight this misconception, since it trivialises their achievements if lots of people are crediting the Nazis for American achievements? Have any Western nations ever taken action to fight the misconception of "Nazi superscience"?

One thing is for certain, the notion of "Nazi superscience" debunks "history is written by the winners".

Hello, my name is Alexandr. I am the COO and the Lead game designer at Starni Games β€” the game development team from Ukraine.

How is your week going? Hope you are all doing well and stay healthy.

Today I will tell you about Krupp K5 - a German railway artillery in our upcoming wargame Strategic Mind: Fight for Freedom.

In 1930, the French Maginot Line was the strongest defensive line in the entire world. Its well-designed, well-stocked and hideously expensive forts seemed impregnable. They had to be either bypassed through the dangerous, near-unpassable Ardennes, or destroyed from afar. Modern problems require modern solutions, the Germans must have thought, and prepared for both possibilities.

Krupp K5 was a 283mm railway cannon with an effective firing range of 64 kilometers - not the most outlandish weapon in the German arsenal, but definitely one of the reasons for the persisting image of β€œNazi superscience”. It could only be moved over the rail, and couldn’t rotate by itself, only facing in one direction - a glaring issue, some would think, if another modern solution didn’t counter it. A special railway β€œturntable” would be built on-site before firing, allowing the Krupp to rotate and change directions - for this reason, setting the cannon up took approximately 2 hours. At 15 shots per hour, this wasn’t a very time-efficient weapon, but whenever it made the shot, the enemy felt it.

Some accounts claim that the Allied soldiers facing such cannons at the Italian town of Anzio nicknamed Krupp K5 the β€œAnzio Express”, for the train-like sound its 7-ton shells made as they barrelled through the air.

Krupp K5 in Fight for Freedom The Krupp K5 unit has a large Gun range, but it is vulnerable to enemy attacks, so it should be kept at a safe distance and well protected. One of the secondary objectives allows you to capture the Krupp K5 unit and use it against its creators.

Nazi Superscience: How to avoid wehrby clichΓ©s?

So r/shitwehraboossay, I'm working on a pulp-ish little project involving the Nazis coming back from secret bases in Antarctica in the late Cold War to take their revenge against the USSR. And this plot means that a lot of wacky Nazi super-technology!

However, I'm not really a huge fan of the Wehrmacht - hence my presence here! - and would like to make my unrealistic scenario as realistic a possible, by giving the Reich soldiers weaponry and gear that looks both modern enough to be credible and interesting to look at... without going into the realm of wehrbwanking.
I've already done some brainstorming and research, and have come up with several ideas:
-Small arms are pretty much the same as in 1945. The StG-44, MG42, G43 aren't notably different from an AKM, FN MAG and SVD in terms of raw performance.
-Most of the tanks are modernised E-series using modern weapons (L7 105mm guns, as they got the blueprints from sympathisers in the Bundeswehr) and appliquΓ©/reactive armor, as they're immediate postwar designs like the T-54/55, Centurion, and Patton series. More modern ones are German-inspired, with interlocking road wheel suspension and Tiger II-shaped turrets, using composite armor and 12.8cm smoothbore guns, based on data from spies familiar with East German T-72Ms.
-Planes are original designs, consistent with 70s/80s tech (or so I hope), using elements from historical designs: flying wings, intercontinental bombers... For example, the self-propelled coffin called the Me-163 was turned into a reliable plane that's armed with compact heatseeker missiles and catapulted from U-Boote or train wagons to provide air cover to the ground forces.
-Missile tech (ballistical, SAM, ATGM) is brought to Western levels "thanks" to German scientists who were brought to the US via operation Paperclip and kept helping their "expat friends" in Argentina.

In other words, I deducted and modernised what I could from late war German projects, and filled in the gaps with data obtained from sympathisers in both Germanies and in the US.

And of course, the Reich produces synthetic oil and plastics in order to compensate their lack of raw resources, as to represent some sort of threat for more than a couple months.

What do you think about that? I hope it's realistic enough not to be fantastic Wehrb-wanking, and interesting enough so that the bad guys don't look too bland and unimaginative. Thanks in advance, and I'm ready to answer any question that doesn't comp

Tips for Weird/Superscience MOTW games?

I'm interested in running a MOTW campaign with an emphasis on the weird and super/pseudo-scientific. I started with Delta Green, but that's a bit too dark for my players and they felt like they didn't have the tools to move the story forward, which wouldn't be so much of an issue with this game.

Inspirations are the usual: Fringe, X-files, maybe Twin Peaks since I want to set it in the Pacific Northwest where I live. Maybe some Tales from the Loop if you imagine being the guy tasked with figuring out what happened to the nice teenagers who went walking in the woods. I'll probably have the characters work for an agency of some kind with the dual purpose of 1) investigating mysteries and 2) covering them up, to keep that Delta Green feeling. Maybe have the agency they work for tied back in to the organization behind all the weirdness as well. I have no idea what's behind all the weirdness but it'll probably be something like time travelers or an alternate universe unless I get a good idea for aliens. Probably alternating weird phenomena and "monsters" or mixing them up to keep things interesting.

I've got the Tome of Mysteries which has some good advice for this, but I couldn't find any actual plays that don't follow the traditional "weird monsters in a small town" format. Also, I'm wondering which playbooks go along with this concept. I'm thinking of ruling out the Spellslinger and the Divine because they're overtly magical. The Spooky and the Monstrous could be easily reskinned as humans who've had their own brush with the unnatural and gained special abilities they don't fully understand, I guess. I also looked at the Action Scientist playbook, which on the one hand gives you a shot of superscience right up front, but maybe will make things too goofy if they solve every mystery with some experimental gadget they made out of a Raspberry Pi.

Any suggestions or resources to share?

Superscience Power Armors

Hi, everyone.

Inspired by the new Anthem game coming out next February, I started thinking about 3 suits of powered armor. Can you help me balance and flesh them out, providing inputs, ideas and suggestions?

The ideia is that they're SUPERSCIENCE and evolve with the player character. They provide not only AC, but also a "pool" of HP that must be depleted before hurting the player. The suits power level are divides into 3 Tiers (based on the levels of the Gambit School for each suit). The wearer can "imbue" the suit with up to 3 gambits (one use/long rest) and have some Tricks to use at all times. After the suit reached 0 HP, the player cannot use the suit's Gambits and Tricks (even if they haven't been used yet).

I'm still working on the setting, but it would be a mix of ME: Andromeda and Anthem, as in: the players are part of a new exploration/colonization effort in a very harsh environment.

Here they are:

SciFi novels/tv shows/movies set in our solar system? (no FTL or other superscience)

For some reason I've lately been interested in finding for some good science fiction stories that take place entirely inside our own solar system, with none of the typical space opera trappings like FTL drives or improbable space combat physics, etc.

There are quite a few great examples of this sort of thing, such as Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy, Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and to a lesser extent the TV series StarHunter (which did get weird in the second season but was reasonably 'hard' for the most part). I was wondering if anyone else had any good examples of similar works.

Edit: Wow, thanks a ton folks, lots of great suggestions. Glad to see there's a lot of neat stuff out there still to read and watch!

What would Kaiserreich Pulp-Superscience look like?

I have a soft spot for pulp/super-science versions of WW2, particularly when it comes to RPGs and Table-Top wargames- Dust, Konflict '47, Gear Krieg, etc. In those games you tend to get similar units/tech for certain factions- Germany usually has zombies and a larger technology edge than real-life. Russians get bear soldiers or super-strongmen. Japan gets swords that somehow matter in 1945. Thing that play in to national/factional stereotypes and occasionally cover a major weakness that group had in the war.

Anyways- wondering what people would imagine as the 'pulp superscience' of KRTL. What's the Dust/Gear Krieg equivalent nerds are playing in 2019 in their reality? Who develops mech? Zombies? Supersoldiers? What's the big gimmick?

But with the Pirate, and Dean's suggestion on how to keep the wheels turning, we might not see the same mistakes repeated!? Wouldn't that be refreshing? Of course, there's no drama in that... But instead of seeing Doc squander this opportunity all by himself in the first two episodes makes it so much more refreshing, and also shows that Doc has changed!
