A list of puns related to "Newel"
Hi carpenties,
I am wondering what the thought is out there toward these newel mounting plates? The idea is you attach it with screws to the bottom of the newel, then attach the plate (and newel) to the floor. Has anyone used this with tapcons/kwikcons (basically screws for concrete) and been satisfied?
My intuition tells me to get some ready rod (threaded steel) and epoxy that into the slab then drill a hole in the newel post and slip it down over the ready rod.
Can anyone who has used the plates share their experience? Am I going to regret this? Thanks for reading.
I've been trying to look up ways to tighten a loose newel post but haven't had much luck. Most videos show tightening the newel post to the stairs, but since mine is at the top of the stairs, it has to tighten to the floor.
I think it's currently attached to the floor with this: https://www.woodstairs.com/product/lj-3006-newel-mounting-plate/
Is it possible to tighten this without removing the entire newel post, handrails, and balusters? I was thinking of using some sort of thin filler material to fill in the gap between the steel plate and newel post, but I'm worried that it will only loosen it further with continued use. Any thoughts, tips, or methods on how to tighten this?
Thanks
Would appreciate any suggestions before I make a mess. I had initially planned to drill a hole at an angle the width of the top of a lag bolt, then a smaller pilot hole for the threads through the bottom of the post into the subfloor, run a lag through, and then fill the hole with a dowel - cut flush/stain.
House is about 40 years old. I looked around on the sides of the post to see if there was already a dowel plug I could drill out and tighten a bolt, but I don't know that exists on this.
Thanks!

Top (cap covers screw tightening to railing)
The newel cap (sphere object) on my bannister is loose. The previous occupants put a nail in (on the left side) which has failed to secure the cap. What is the best way for me to secure this? The only thing I can think to do is hammer in more nails and paint over.

home depot / lowes / rona don't have a great selection.
Edit: at this point, my inclination is to install the post as normal, then pack the hole with something so the plug has something to back up against. Then just carefully do wood filler around it. It's all getting stained a very dark brown, so I think that should hide the imperfections pretty well.
So, I'm building a new railing around my staircase and balcony, and two of the newel posts are going to be anchored straight down by one of these: https://www.rockler.com/sure-tite-newel-post-fastener
The large hole I drilled on the side to install the washer and bolt ended up being a bit too large for the wooden plug that's supposed to go in it.
My Google searches only returned results on how to fix smaller screw holes, but I need to make the existing holes a bit smaller to receive the plugs.
Any suggestions for how to shrink the opening?
