A list of puns related to "Medical Tourism"
How does medical tourism work, specifically in the context of cheaper operations? When people travel to third world countries like India for their surgeries how is the cost much lesser than say the US? Is it because India for example is charging around the real base cost and other countries are inflating it or is India undercharging?
Hi All,
Listening to Chris talk about receiving dental care in Thailand is fascinating. I'm aware that the same thing is available in places like Mexico or Costa Rica, or heart surgery in India, things like that. Has anyone had or know someone who has had a good experience with traveling for medical/dental care?
Hey!
I'm from Ontario and the options here are predatory.
Field trip - seems "reasonable" for the price of group therapy but its not IV. Why spend that much money on something that's not as effective? I don't want therapy from them.
Crtce - 850$
Nasal spray- expensive not as effective as IV
Pills - not an option because big pharma
I live by the border and am thinking about getting IV there. The closet clinic is 450$ US, not included assessment.
Does anyone have any experiences with crossing the boarder to get IV or seeing a doctor in the states that can prescribe take home meds for a reasonable price? Whats the process for seeing a doctor in America to do this for the IV route or the pill route?
Will Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Nicaraguan women flock to Honduras to get an abortion in case their pregnancy is life-threatening or the fetus is in its imminent death?
Xiomara Castro, president-elect of Honduras, is set to decriminalize abortion under certain circumstances, in stark contrast within the most anti-abortion region in the entire globe.
My doctor prescribed Ozempic to me, however my insurance refused to cover the cost. I purchased the .25/.50 mg dose (starter dose for the first month) for $160 and the 1mg dose (1 month supply) for $230 in Mexico. In the US either of these doses would cost $890 for one monthβs supply. My medicine from Mexico is manufactured at the same facility as my sisterβs Ozempic that she purchased in the US. Exact same address. I went to Farmacia del Ahorra. No prescription needed. Plan to pay in cash/pesos, (my credit card did not work at the pharmacy but it worked at restaurants). Do remember to bring ice packs and a cooler to keep your medicine refrigerated during travel. Pick a hotel with a fridge and freezer.
Does anyone have any experience traveling outside of the USA for kidney stone removal? The price for the surgery in the states seems to be skyrocketing and I canβt do it again!! I had my first surgery about 4 months ago and now, I believe Iβm fighting at least one stone in each kidney again. Any experience, advise, thoughts, wisdom, always welcome! ππΌ
Hey fellas,
So Iβm tired of being in pain and Iβm done crying over my situation thinking someone other than myself will actually help me. Iβve completely lost faith in the Canadian public health system for itβs long long long long (did I say long?) waiting time.
Iβm waiting from a call to the only private neurosurgeon Iβve found in my province and until I see him, Iβm looking for out of the country surgeons. The problem is that I probably donβt have the money yet so I donβt want to get a quote from an agency and tell them after that I need more time to get the money and think that Iβm not serious about it.
Do someone here went through surgery via medical tourism? How much did it costs and how was your experience? Did you organized the trip yourself or asked a medical tourism agency to do it?
I am opting to get treated abroad for reasons of cost and convenience. I travel frequently, pretty much as a lifestyle, so it makes a lot of sense for me. Right now I have gotten consultations with several surgeons to get opinions on how to treat my case of condylar hyperplasia and crossbite, and was recommended to get DJS, although I believe condylectomy may be an option for me.
I am currently trying to choose where to seek treatment, and looking for recommendations. I used to live in India and have family there, so I am hoping to find an excellent surgeon with lots of experience somewhere there. I have communicated and gotten quotes for DJS ranging from 5k-8K USD. However I think a lot of countries, including Thailand and Brazil, have specialists that could help me at a similar price point which I can afford out of pocket. I just want someone who is great at what they do, basically the best in their country. The surgeon I have seen so far is very helpful, but too young and doesn't have enough experience for me to feel comfortable trusting her completely. So I am still searching for someone.
Have any of you gone this route and gotten good results with a surgeon abroad? What was your experience? And what are some of the hospitals or surgeons in Asia that have the best reputation for maxillofacial surgery?

Hello Redditors,
I'm here to offer advice to my fellow Reddit users. As a Reddit user who works in an Orthopedic Clinic, I saw some people postpone their "must" surgeries and/or treatments due to the extreme cost of the treatments.
My clinic is called ONV Ortho, I am not a surgeon but his assistant. We're a clinic based in Izmir, Turkey and some of our patients are national athletes, boxers, and professional fighters (we welcomed one MMA fighter from Russia last month) and also elderly people from the UK, Holland, Russia, and Cyprus. We have a surgeon (Dr. Burak Onvural) who worked in the USA (New York Ranawat Orthopedic Hospital) and got Micro Surgery Classes at Frankfurt University.
I know that many of you have worries and concerns about medical tourism and that's actually very reasonable. That's why I'm here to answer your questions on that. Below, I tried the answer 3 FAQs on medical tourism and orthopedics.
Q: How does Turkey offer affordable medical practices than other countries?
A: Have you seen the exchange rate? It's 15 Turkish Lira for 1 Euro, right now. That's the first actual reason tbh. The second reason is Turkish Government offers social health system to the citizens which creates a competitive area among private clinics. Basically, you can't ask for a treasure over a treatment that can be reached free in government hospitals.
The other thing is private clinics should put a great effort to be known. No one would spend money for "Okayish" treatments and services in Turkey.
Q: I read/heard bad stories about Medical Tourism, Are the "scary" stories actually true?
A: I don't know what story we're talking but it might be true. I'm reading "bad doctor" experiences in the USA, UK, or South Korea too. So, it's not actually about the country it's actually about your doctor and clinic. This is a thing that we call "Bad Product meets Good Marketing". However, finding a good doctor is actually possible and also easy. Reading google & Trustpilot reviews, asking for a video call with your surgeon, requesting a detailed cost breakdown, requesting your English Consent Forms, avoiding "middle-man" medical tourism agencies are good filters to find a high-quality clinic.
Q: What about covid-19 restrictions? Can I fly safely?
A: Yes, Turkey is considered Green by the UK authorities at the moment. Some countries (such as the UK and Germany) ask for a covid test result before the return flight, that's all.
... keep reading on reddit β‘From what I understand therapists in Canada can be pretty expensive and not always covered by the healthcare system. Health insurance cover from employers are better but can still be limited.
In this scenario, are there Canadians who have cheaper (edit:online) therapists in lower cost of living countries? South Africa comes to mind for Anglo Canadians. India can also be a potential destination but the cultural differences might be greater. To be fair, I am aware of new Canadians from India who have Indian therapists sitting in India. But are there Canadians outside of new immigrant groups who have remote therapists ?
For French Canadians I am not sure if there are countries with significantly lower cost of living but relatively small cultural differences.
Of course, if you speak more languages, you have more options. Costa Rica, Argentina and Brazil for example have different cultures, but the culture is still essentially western. The time zone difference is also small or none, depending on where you live in Canada.
Of course, all this is possible thanks to the increasing broader acceptance of online therapy sessions due to the pandemic. So this question might be a little too early to ask.
Anyway, I would love to learnt the perspective of Canadians on this topic!
Edit: Some Links about Canadian medical tourists. The articles are from a few years ago so may be this has died down. But I have read comments on Canadian subreddits about this recently.

Here is a great short article from Allied Market Researchβ that talks about how the medical tourism market is gaining traction and how Mexico is one of the fastest-growing destinations in America.

So I planned to go to Brazil to visit my girlfriend early next year. Meanwhile, I just got a dental cleaning done and was reminded that I needed to get my wisdom teeth removed as they are pretty lodged in my gums. I was suggested to get them removed when I was 16 but now I am 26 never got it done due to the cost, $200-300 per tooth for surgical removal (not pulled) or $2-3k total. I considered even going to Mexico in the past get it done for cheap, but thought it would be too sketchy. But now I realize that I am going to Brazil, I could probably get my wisdom teeth surgically removed as well.
What is the cost for having wisdom teeth surgically removed in Brazil? I know that private clinics are better than public health system so I would prefer to get my procedure done there. Has anyone else done this before? I would have my girlfriend there to help with speaking portuguese and dealing with paperwork. Is this a good idea?
Has anyone here done medical tourism for orthognathic surgery? Did you speak the language of that country? If not, how did you set things up? Are there travel agencies for medical tourism?
